About Me (In My Own Words)
I credit my new primary care physician for much of my recovery. She referred me to a cardiologist in early January and by mid-April, I was operated on for severe aortic stenosis at Yale New Haven.
I am home now and exactly one week has passed since the surgery. Yes, I feel some discomfort, but I mainly feel gratitude. Had a surgeon less skilled than Dr. Elefteriades performed the surgery, I might not be here to tell my story. As the doctor shared after the surgery, I had only about a month left to live, and he had never seen a valve as tight as mine on a living human being.
If I have advice to share it would be this - make sure you have both a strong PCP and a highly skilled surgeon. I asked other doctors who they would recommend; who they would see if they had this issue, and finally, read everything you can. This is all slightly less frightening if you understand what's happening.
I'm sure I'll think of more things to add as time passes, but I wanted to quickly share these initial thoughts.
