About Me (In My Own Words)
I was a very healthy and active 54 year old who was diagnosed with mitral valve prolaspe with sever mitral valve regurgitation 4 years ago. I was referred for surgery then but the surgeon at Cleveland Clinic recommended I wait since I was functioning so well. I was cycling, running, swimming, weight training, etc. I had done a few sprint triathlons.
This summer when I went for my regular check up with my cardiologist, he said my left ventrical had got bigger. My left atrium was all ready enlarged and I had occasional atrail fibrillation but noting bad and I wasn't on any medication. He encouraged me to have the surgery sooner than later, so I contacted Cleveland Clinic again and scheduled the surgery for 10/30/12.
On 9/02/12, I went to the hospital for sustained atrial fibrillation and was put on medication for the first time. I was controlled with just 25 mg a day of Metoprolol.
My surgeon Marc Gillinov was able to successfully repair the mitral valve and did a Maze procedure to help with the aFib.
It is now 17 days post surgery. My recovery has been faster than expected however my heart rate is becoming more irregular despite medication. This is making it difficult for me to sleep and therefore drowsy all the time. I'm on digoxin and metoprolol but it doesn't seem to help.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
