About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse close to thirty years ago. Between fifteen and twenty years ago, the diagnosis changed to leaking valve, which progressed to mitral regurgitation, minor, moderate, moderate/severe. Three years ago, I experienced atrial fibrillation. In August, my cardiologist said that he now thought valve surgery was definitely in my future, but that I could stil wait a bit. My husband and I did a lot of reading and decided it was worth a consultation with the surgeons, Paul Massimiano and Niv Ad. With what we learned from these consultations, we decided the time was now. I've had all the preliminary diagnostic tests, cardiac catheterization, Transesophageal endoscopy, doppler carotid artery, and a CAT scan of my pelvic area. Minimally invasive mitral valve repair surgery and a Maze procedure are scheduled for January 9, 2013 at Fairax Hospital.
