About Me (In My Own Words)
I'm 60 years old, happily married, I have two Daughters, three Granddaughters, and one Grandson. I found out 15 years ago I have a Bicuspid Aortic Valve.
All my life I've been symptom free until this past year when I started experiencing shortness of breath. I've never experienced chest pain or lightheadedness, but the shortness of breath and fatigue I'm experiencing now is affecting my quality of life.
Been seeing my Cardiologist and getting an echocardiogram every 6 months for years to monitor the stenosis, three weeks ago my gradient score hit 86. As much as I wanted to put this off till I turned 65, it's obvious I can't wait.
I read Adam's very informative book three years ago, it was extremely helpful and I learned allot. Also been following a number of patient journals . Even though I'm nervous about this surgery, the book and reading about other patient's experiences in their journals has helped prepare me.
We decided on the Trifecta valve, made with a titanium frame and young cow heart tissue. Angiogram is Friday May 30th. Pre-Op meeting June 2nd. Surgery will be on June 9th.
I'm confident and scared at the same time, actually I'm only scarred when I'm awake. From what I've read, this is a common feeling. My loving wife Eve has been, and will continue to support and encourage me throughout everything we're about to go through.
Want to hear a cool story? Eve and I met in 1963 in 3rd grade. We quickly developed crushes for each other. In 1967 my family move to the other side of the country, but I never forgot her. Long story short, in 1995 I looked her up, found her, and we've been happily married for 16 wonderful years.
With Eve by my side, my loving family and dozens of caring friends praying and sending well wishes....I'm going to be just fine :)
