About Me (In My Own Words)
At my annual checkup I discussed a nagging cough I’d had for about 18 months. I avoid not only hospitals but also physicians; I listen to what my body tells me. Any fatigue I felt I attributed to aging, although I’m only 61. I had ruled out allergies and seasonal illnesses and could not fathom why I arbitrarily woke up coughing. I’m a very sound sleeper but my husband is not. He urged me to mention it, so I did. After listening to my heart, my doctor noted a murmur and sent me for an echocardiogram. Results indicated moderate to severe stenosis in the aortic valve and an aortic aneurysm. I met with a local surgeon who recommended replacement, and I sought a second opinion. The second surgeon also recommended surgery, and my adventure began. The hardest part has been navigating the health care system. I am very thankful to the health care professionals that got me to seek the medical expertise I needed. I am certain all will go well, and look forward to a long, fulfilling life with my new valve.
