About Me (In My Own Words)
My family physician Dr. Walter Chow noticed a heart murmur about 10 years ago. It gradually became more noticeable and about 5 years ago he prescribed an echo cardiogram. The results indicated aortic stenosis with regurgitation so he prescribed annual echo cardiograms. Two years later he referred me to Dr. Anthony Della-Siega my cardiologist. Until that point I was not aware of any symptoms and exercising regularly, in particular power walks of about 7 km about 5 times per week; that has been normal since 1967. In 2008 I noticed my energy level falling and put is down to just getting old (then 76). However, in March 2009 my echo-cardiogram indicated severe stenosis. Other symptoms started appearing such as shortness of breath when exercising and leg/ankle swelling when sitting too long in one place. My echocardiogram in March 2010 confirmed severe aortic stenosis with regurgitation and my heart size still normal. Dr. Della-Siega recommended aortic valve replacement be done soon, the sooner the better. I agreed and as of May am awaiting a cardiac catheterization procedure to better assess the condition of my heart before surgery.
