About Me (In My Own Words)
I’m 50 and live in the U.K. I’ve always been relatively healthy until I started to experience palpitations and dizziness. I was diagnosed with severe mitral regurgitation and underwent a mitral valve replacement via a sternotomy. I was fitted with a mechanical valve and will be on warfarin for life. My surgeon has been fantastic and fortunately I’ve had all of my care under the NHS and have regular follow up care. The lesions on my heart indicated that I’d suffered from rheumatic fever as a child although I don’t remember this and my parents have passed. After the operation I suffered some dehiscence of the sternotomy wound and 4 weeks later I developed sepsis. I spent some time in hospital being given iv antibiotics. I subsequently developed cdiff as a result. About two weeks after that I had a major stroke but was lucky enough to be in time for a thrombectomy. They tell me that the stroke was as a result of my unstable inr. I’m currently living in fear of another stroke. I’m still exhausted but this could be as a result of any number of the infections that I’ve experienced or the stroke. I’m also still coughing up yellow mucus but nobody seems to know what this is. It’s been an absolute rollercoaster and while I would never want to go through it again I know that one day I will feel better.
