About Me (In My Own Words)
Edward J. (Dukie) Woodard, Jr.
For nearly 50 years, E.J. Woodard, Jr. CLBB, Chairman, President, CEO and a Director of a local Bank has been a beacon in the Hampton Roads banking community, helping to support some of the most exciting development projects in the region.
Woodard a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School (class of 1961), continued his education at Frederick College, Old Dominion University and the American Institute of Banking. Married since 1967, he and his wife Sharon have one son, Brandon. He is an active member of Talbot Park Baptist Church and has served on many civic and charitable organizations, committees and boards throughout Hampton Roads. He was a Director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta from January 2009 through December 2010.
Woodard began his banking career with State loan and Finance Management Corporation, followed by First Virginia Bank of Tidewater.
Woodard joined a local community bank in February 1972. He quickly rose to become the youngest individual elected to the position of bank president in the United States in 1973.
The proof of his success is perhaps best measured by the number of customers who banked with him for decades and whose children and grandchildren came to him for guidance in meeting their financial needs.
He retired from the community bank in Dec. 2010 and joined a community development company he helped organize 27 years ago and where he served as President until Dec. 2010.
He underwent heart valve replacement surgery (a 25mm Porcine Tissue AORTIC Heart Valve Model 2625) in April 2008 when he was 65 years old. One month later his Father underwent the same surgery by the same physician, Dr. Lenox Baker, Jr. at age 88. He continues his long term treatment with Dr. Martin Goldberg in Norfolk, Virginia.
