About Me (In My Own Words)
I had aortic valve stenosis diagnosed in 2008. This is the valve that permits blood to leave the heart and go out to the body but prevents it from flowing back into the heart. My valve is stiffened by calcium deposits so it doesn't open wide enough and it leaks a little.
We have been "watchfully waiting," since I have none of the classic symptoms (lightheadedness, shortness of breath, and chest pain), but now echocardiogram results suggest that I should have the valve replaced before I do have symptoms. Dr. Darren Freed will do open-heart surgery sometime this summer of 2012, and I'm very optimistic that this will be a kind of new beginning for the next era of my life.
