About Me (In My Own Words)
Diagnosed in 2004 with a congenital heart defect; Mitral Valve Regurgitation as well as a Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). Looking back on it, I had symptoms my entire young life but no one ever found my defect. In 2004 my family doctor heard a heart murmur during a routine exam and I was sent for tests from there. Took a few months to find the defect in my heart and from there I was referred to a Cardiologist here in Calgary, Alberta Canada. I was scheduled for open heart surgery in February of 2006 when we found out we were expecting out first born later that year. My surgery was put on hold until we had all the babies we were going to have.
In early 2014, my cardiologist decided it was time for my heart to be mended. The leak I had from the mitral valve was becoming a little bit stronger as well as the hole I had between my atrium was a causing a bit more blood to go through. So, July 1, 2014 I drove from Calgary to Edmonton to have my surgery done at the Mazankowski Heart Institute. At the time they weren't sure if I would need a new valve or if they could repair mine. Thankfully, they repaired the valve I have!
I am now going on 3 years post op and I am very proud of everything I have been through!
