About Me (In My Own Words)
I was unaware that I had a bicuspid aortic heart valve. I learned about a heart murmur in early July, 2019 and was scheduled to visit a cardiologist in my hometown of St. Louis on August 3, 3019.
On July 12, 2019, my husband and I had a Rhine River Cruise scheduled and we departed as planned, since I was unaware of any issues and felt normal, with no symptoms.
On July 14, I suffered cardiac arrest while climbing a paved walkway to a castle. Thank goodness my spouse and another person were able to provide CPR and brought me back quickly.
I was rushed to a local hospital in Bad Kreuznach, Germany where, after a cardiac catheter procedure, an aortic stenosis was discovered. I was told that not only would I not Be able to complete our cruise, but that I would be unable to fly home to America until I had aortic heart valve replacement surgery.
We were transferred to the University of Medicine in Mainz Germany where I underwent the surgery.
We were cleared to fly home on August 7, 2019.
