About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with an ascending aortic aneurysm 10 years ago (at age 50) & had monitored yearly/bi-yearly with a cardiologist via CT Scans & echocardiograms. This summer the aneurysm was over 5.2 cm and surgery was recommended. I consulted with Dr. Joe Woo, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford in Palo Alto, CA and he indicated, by my latest echo, that I needed an aortic valve replacement too. He also stated folks who had valve replacements & aneurysm repairs were coming back 10 years later needing the aortic root replaced as well. So, on September 14, 2015 I had open-heart surgery for all 3 of these. It was noted I did have a bicuspid aortic valve which was not known to me before. I spent 3 days in the Cardiac ICU & 4 days in the Intermediate ICU. I have nothing but rave & very grateful reviews for Dr. Woo and the staff at Stanford. I've been recovering at home very well and it will be 6 weeks post-op soon. I've been walking 2-3 miles per day. I'm grateful to be alive & now living without the fear or worry of a time bomb in my chest.
