About Me (In My Own Words)
I have always been extremely active and recently have played platform tennis and pickle ball on a weekly basis. I played pickle ball on June 20th with no shortness of breath. The first week of July was the first time I noticed a little shortness of breath if I walked quickly up a hill or upstairs. I had my yearly visit & an echocardiogram with my local cardiologist on July 10th. The echocardiogram showed that my ejection fraction had gone from 50-55% to 20%. My diagnosis of Aortic Valve Stenosis was a bit of a shock. My cardiologist referred me to Dr. Lewis Britton who is head of cardio thoracic surgery at Albany Medical College. Luckily, we already knew Dr. Britton as my husband Bob had been seeing him for three years. After an appointment on August 14th with Dr. Britton, I was scheduled for surgery on Monday, October 1st. I have been feeling fine, and still only get a little out of breath if I go upstairs or up a hill too fast. Just to add a little excitement to the mix, we are selling our house on Lake George after 25 years and moving to a nearby townhouse in Queensbury in early November. I've been trying to get as much packing done as possible before the surgery. This is probably a good thing as I worry about the move instead of the surgery. I figure there's not much I can do about the surgery! Our daughter Pam is coming from Boston on Sunday to be with Bob while I am in the hospital for 5-7 days. I feel very positive about the surgery on Monday as I feel confident in my surgeon and have a fabulous support team of family and friends. Bob will write an update in my journal after I get out of surgery. As soon as I am able, I'll add a summary of my progress.
