About Me (In My Own Words)
During May of 2008, due to complaints of fatigue and breathlessness I scheduled a visit to my cardiologist after exhausting all other diagnostic possibilities, (as I was only 26, who needs open heart surgery at age 26?). I soon found out the previous slight regurgitation of my mitral valve had managed to become severe and I would need open heart surgery to have it repaired or replaced, (based upon their findings during surgery. To make a long story short I had the surgery on June 4th 2008 and the valve was repaired. Unfortunately during the surgery I suffered a stroke due to an embolism and awoke paralyzed on my left side. My memories of the first few days out were not good as they held back on pain medication to aid any recovery of motor skills on my paralyzed side. Thank god for youth after what seemed like a lifetime I regained close to full movement (two years later and I’m at about 95%).
It’s now 2010 and it still plagues me daily. I have a constant tremor now and am overcome with anxiety at all times. I have days where it’s difficult to walk down the hallway at my work because I’m in fear my legs will give out on me. This has been drastically traumatizing to me even more so then the surgery itself as I was previously a very outgoing, social, and confident individual, who seemingly overnight morphed into an anxiety stricken agoraphobic person with a below par memory.
Needless to say I still consider myself recovering from this stroke as I’m determined to get my old life back on day, hopefully sooner than later.
