Hi Korby,
I have just read your story .Hope you well on your way to recovery.
My son Garreth has the exact same procedure at age 13 . Valve repair and aortic aneurysm repair. He was born with a bicuspid heart valve.
We are now facing a second challenge 3 years later at age 16. He now has moderate to server stenosis of the aortic valve. He is in the watchful waiting period now as it looks like he will require surgery again to replace the valve. He has recently had an MRI scan and will have a stress test next month.
I am following you as it seems like Garreth and yourself seem to have a similar condition.
Wishing you all the best and greetings from Cape Town South Africa!

Hi Koby,
I also had a bicuspid valve operation one year ago tomorrow in Boston. My primary care had told me about the issue years before and said he thought at some point I'd have to have it taken care of. Needless to say last year leading up to surgery was challenging. Glad you are on the road to recovery and good luck with baseball! Crazy how fast time goes by.

Hi Koby- I also had Dr. Castro perform my bi-cuspid surgery but I had to have a replacement and used a pig valve. I concur with your observations regarding Dr. Castro. He is the best.
Keep up the recovery and it sounds like you will be able to play baseball in the future!!

Koby! What a great and inspiring story! I have not finished my profile yet, but basically, I'm in a similar situation as yours, except I did not know at birth and I am double your age! :) I will be getting a CT angiogram next week to determine the extent to which my ascending aortic arch is stretched, but definitely need my bicuspid aortic valve replaced (or at least I thought, until reading your story). Obviously we're all different, but do you recall what your Aortic Valve Area (AVA) was prior to surgery?
I'm so glad to hear things are going well and that even before full 6-months of recovery, you're able to do light workouts (I'm currently limited to no lifting (of anything) and walking only!).

Kudos to you and your parents for finding the best alternative for you! My son had his bicuspid valve and aneurysm repaired at 19 years old also. We had never even heard of a bicuspid valve before his diagnosis a few months before surgery. I have always wondered if it would have been better knowing or not. My son had a mini sternotomy, which was also important to us. We were referred to Dr. Plestis. My son is now 24 and doing well.

Dear Koby, I read your story and was amazed at your courage and so thankful for your successful surgery. The right surgeon (and health care team) can make all the difference in this big, beautiful world. You placed your life in their hands. They not only made your physically "whole", but shaped your outlook on your life and the compassion of others. I have to tell you that in reading your story you are an outstanding writer. I was amazed. I hope that you know that. As a collegiate baseball player you must be in outstanding physical shape and have mental discipline, some day you may want to write a story about your heart journey as a young adult. Thank you for joining Heart Valve Surgery.com. God bless you and all that you love.
