Hi Judy,
according to my surgeon, the sensations that you are feeling are quite normal, I too experienced and still do occasionally these sensations in my face, lip, arm, foot, at first I was very frightened that I was having a TIA, my surgeon states that a large percentage of patients experience nerve damage during the operation, he assured me that it was due to the positions that we are placed in to ensure a safe and successful outcome! he also said that I was not to under estimate the operation and any symptoms would eventually go away. Good luck with your recovery x
Judy Margaret Thanks so much Debbie. That does help.

Congrats on being back home Judy!! I'm sure you're so glad to be home. I go in for my surgery a wk. from today, aortic root replacement. I can only imagine how good it feels to finally get home after going through the surgery and being in the hospital for 6 days.
Sending positive energy your way hope the healing process goes smoothly for you.

I have a very vague recollection of opening my eyes and being semi-aware that the vent tube was still in. I didn't see it, I didn't feel it, taste it, hear it - nothing. My ONLY thought was, "I'm out of surgery and everything is ok." Then I promptly went back to sleep and when I woke all the way up a few hours later the vent was gone.
Good luck tomorrow, you're in my prayers!

I was worried about it too. I remember slowly waking with the tube in but being largely still sedated. I had family there and they held my hands to prevent m from removing it. As soon as the nurse was able to see that I was awake and could identify people In The room by looking and blinking at them, then I guess they figured it I was conscious enough to remove the tube. It took less than 3 seconds and I think because I was still mostly out of it, it didn't bother me as much as I had imagined.
Judy Margaret Thanks Cam. probably one of the smaller things that happens to us, right?

Judy,
I told my surgeon that having the breathing tube in when I woke up was my biggest fear and he said he would make sure it was removed before I woke up. Maybe you can ask the same thing. Best wishes.
Judy Margaret Yes, thanks Dora. if I get a chance, I will ask. no harm in asking, right?

Judy wishing you all the best for your surgery. An attitude of gratitude helped me. You are in very good hands, let the staff do their job, the tube is no big deal. Mine was still in and I felt very thirsty when it was removed. I drank water too quickly and spewed it up. Some things are uncomfortable but focus on the main objective and down the track you will think its only a week out of a lifetime of improved health. ;-)
I woke up with the breathing tube still in and thought to myself "this isn't as bad as other people described".

Good luck with your surgery and recovery. Be patient. Recovery can be frustrating. It gets better faster the farther into recovery you get.

Hi Judy best of luck to you going into surgery! I had been on Warfrin for 4 years as I have AF. However, my cardio dude put me on a new med don't know what it would be marketed as in Canada but here in Australia it is called Zarelto and it is just a blanket dose for everyone no need for INR tests. The main ingredient is Rivaroxaban. Hope this helps!

Judy Margaret Thanks Gabi. unfortunately, I am pretty sure that with the mechanical value I am getting in 3 days time, it has to be Warfarin. but maybe that will change in the future. one can hope.

Hello Judy, back in 2010 I had my aortic valve replaced with a cow valve, a year in a half later my tissue valve went bad. I don't know what I was thinking of going with a tissue valve knowing I would have to go for another surgery. I had to be out of my mind. Went back to the Cleveland Clinic back in Dec and this time I went with a Mechanical vale, there designed for life. Blood thinners no big thing. sure u can hear your valve (so what) its a sound of life. I wish you All the best.

I got my mechanical valve March 7, 2014 and I'm only 33. The testing graduates to more days in between. I'm 7 weeks post op today and up to 2 weeks between tests now, not so bad considering I'll be on warfarin for quite some time :) I'm pretty clumsy myself and my bruising isn't bad. My INR goal range is 1.8 - 2.5, holding steady about 2 right now. Best wishes for your surgery!
