Hello Jackie, I had surgery ten weeks ago and my blood pressure at normal is 100/60 so I am used to lower blood pressure. After surgery, I watched the blood pressure be in high 80's to 90's on the top number. Keep calling and talking to the surgeons office, they should have enough experience to keep helping you reduce the drugs to the right level for you. I suspect they are so used to seeing people with heart damage and high blood pressure, the few of us with low or normal need to communicate with them more. Diuretic May be critical for you but maybe they can adjust another. I am not a doctor but hope you get this leveled out soon. It gets better from here. Keep healing.
Jackie Keys Thanks, I am off to see surgeon and cardiologist today, I am sure they will adjust them more.

Sorry to hear about your post op issues. I hope the Dr. gets it figured out. I was so afraid of bowel problems... I kept drinking prune juice and had to stop taking the pain medicine 2 days after coming home. Keep us informed about how you are doing.
Jackie Keys Smart of you wish I would have even thought about it, but that part of the body is so much better.

Congrats with being on the other side of surgery. Yes, all your comments sound familiar to me. Did you think about just renting a mechanical recliner from a medical supply store? I did that.....$95.00 for 1 month. I used it for about 1 1/2 weeks before switching to bed. I always used it for naps.
Those tubes are terrible. I agree that when a person is so independent it is hard to have someone take care of you for the simplest things: like opening the fridge, opening a new bottle of fruit juice, getting stuff out of the cupboards, etc. Keep on healing!!!!!

Hi Jackie
As an ex nurse I can tell you the OR schedule is a fluid thing...so many things can get you bumped; like emergency cases, "planned" emergencies ( cases that cannot wait more than a day or two), cases that run overtime and block the room, unavailability of doctors for whatever reason.
It is incrediably difficult on our OHS folks nerves! One thing you could do is ask to be on call list...if a patient gets cancelled for some reason, you take their time slot. You usually only get a days notice.
It may turn out that you go in as planned..I hope you do...but don't waste too much energy on it if you don't. Pretend you have just checked in for a flight...you are on "airport" time...you cannot control your time!
Best,

Hi Jackie,
I had open heart surgery on 8/2 thru the sternum but because it only was the aortic valve a slightly smaller incision was made. I waited the 6 weeks to drive. I started cardiac rehab in week 5 and highly recommend it.
If you do have an incision between the ribs and the surgeon does not go through the sternum I would think your recovery time will be half what I went thru perhaps even less. I am 10 weeks out now and am back to about 85%.
Best wishes and prayers for you and your family.

Jackie Keys Thanks for the response Joe, so far the surgeon feels it's only the aortic that needs to be fixed, he did say it would be a small incision with only a couple bones broken. My date is now the 29 of October. Jackie

I had the minimal surgery procedure as well. The main advantage for me was the stability of the overall chest sternum is better so you are able to do a few things a week or two earlier based on this. I did not think my pain level was significantly different than the larger incision, maybe some but they were up and about in a similar time as I was. I got a tissue valve, a Medtronic Freestyle with a full root replacement based to the experience of the surgeon having very good luck and minimal repos with a great longevity of the valve. There are a number of good tissue valves out there and your surgeon should be able to tell you why they use one versus another.
If you want to know, then the questions for the surgeon is which valve, why, what is the expected longevity and how will it be installed, sub-coronary or full root replacement. If you do not understand this terminology, no issue, you can trust surgeon to make a good call or you can look it up online and be more involved. Your call.
I am very happy with my outcome and went back to work in under 7 weeks from the valve replacement surgery. If you would like to discuss more, my number is 317 847-5218

Hi Jackie,
I had a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement 16 mos. ago and I did fine and was 73 y/o at the time. I too was able to drive at 3 weeks post surgery and I also started cardiac rehab a few months after surgery and I recommend it. I had my surgery at NY Presbyterian Hospital and my surgeon was the fabulous Dr. Allan Stewart. The most difficulty I had was getting my lung capacity back, but other than that I did great. I was diagnosed at age 5 with a heart murmur but it took a lot of years before it became a problem . I opted for a biologic /tissue valve.
Hope this helps and best wishes for a successful surgery and recovery. Feel free to write to me if I can be of further help.
Good luck!!!!
