I had a similar condition and was moderately severe for about 6 years until this past summer when it went full throttle (severe.)
My surgery was Dec. 15 and was performed with DaVinci robot. Now the leak is tiny. They can't gaurentee a full repair and everyone is different. To further answer your question: you can expect a lot of pre-op tests which are time consuming but mostly non-invasive. Do it all in stride and ask lots of questions until satisfied.
I too am awaiting my mitral valve surgery on April 21 at the Cleveland Clinic - so I can't give you any advice on what to expect post-surgery, but I'm sure you will find a lot of information from others here on the HVJs. Best of luck!
Welcome to the HVJ site. If don't have Adam's book yet, get it ASAP. You'll get lots of info there and what else you might want to know, you might ask specifically and someone will have an answer for you. There's a ton of knowledge and first hand info from those of us who've been through our surgeries and recoveries. You might also want to read some of the journals of those with mitral problems.Good luck.
