Craig,
I have a Edward's 2700TFX valve as of Nov 22, 2017, surgery by Dr Patrick McCarthy at Northwestern in Chicago. I also was chosen ( 6 months later) to attend patients day at Edwards Lifesciences in Irvine, California where I got to hug the people who made/ sewn my valve (very emotional time). So I'm a little impartial to Edward's , however I completely left my decision up to my surgeon because I had an aneurysm and was told something bad could happen if I don't have surgery in the next 3 months ( not much time to research all my options). Since then I have continued to research my decisions.
1. My valve doesn't have the coating to resist calcification like the newest Edward's valve but has been tested for 800 million cycles ( research Edwards lifesciences web site). If you do the math, the valve could last longer than 20 years. Your body makes the valve your own by depositing cells on it which can lead to early failure if your genetic makeup/body deposits too much calcium on it (stenosis).
2. If your valve can be repaired, It can be your best bet for longevity. I highly recommend getting a second opion at the best doctor/facility you can get to. Air and rail travel is economical!
3. We live in a capitalist society, where advertisement is prevalent. Valve manufacturers, Hospitals, Doctors and this web site advertise. Doctors/hospitals may be receiving money for: speaking fees, participating in trials and or research. You can see how much money is given to each doctors by looking it up on the internet ( federal law requires posting).
4. There are many options for different valves and surgical procedures. As a patient, I think you would be wise to rely on the best surgeon you can get to's advice because of the volume and complexity of the situation.
5. Decisions leading up to surgery are a very emotional/scary time. You have to become comfortable with your decisions or continue searching. Every morning when I wake up, I thank God for my Edward's valve, Dr Patrick McCarthy and his team at Northwestern in Chicago (My second opinion).
I wish you the best, as you research your choice/decisions.
