"Having spent most of my career as a judge and attorney, I learned the importance of research and getting the facts straight. After retiring, I looked forward to running and swimming more, but shortness of breath led to the discovery that I needed my aortic valve replaced.
After a local surgeon recommended a full sternotomy, I wanted to evaluate other options. My surgeon suggested contacting Cedars-Sinai and Dr. Joanna Chikwe. Through Cedars’ virtual consultation program, I met with Dr. Chikwe, and interventional cardiologist, Dr. Aakriti Gupta.

"I had been through open heart surgery before. It took a year to fully recover when I had a bypass and aortic valve replacement. Years later, I was showing symptoms again. Fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath – all were signs I had come recognize. This time, tests showed a 45% failure of my mitral valve. A-fib had also developed along with chronic heart failure. The procedure itself was quick: I was in and out in 24 hours. I stayed overnight and felt no pain beyond a little soreness in my groin where the catheter went in. The day after the procedure, I was sitting in a lawn chair at my grandnephew’s baseball game after walking from the car to the field. A few weeks later, I had a follow up with Brittany and learned that my new valve is doing its job. I was also told that Dr. Makkar was joined for my procedure by his co-interventional cardiologist, Dr. Aakriti Gupta. Just three months later, I’m feeling normal again. Dr. Aakriti Gupta, interventional cardiologist, graduated from Government Medical College and Hospital (Chandigarh, India) in 2011.
After medical school, Dr. Gupta completed her residency at Yale University in 2016. Dr. Gupta is board-certified in internal medicine, echocardiography, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology.
At Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Gupta is the Assistant Professor of Cardiology and has authored over 75 scientific publications in leading medical journals, including Nature Medicine, JAMA, JACC and Circulation. Her clinical and research interests converge at the intersection of interventional cardiology and health services research.
