Hi everyone,
I'm from Perth, Australia and will be undergoing a Ross Procedure due to my Bicuspid Aortic Valve. I just posted quite an in depth 'My Story' if anybody would like a read as its a bit of an interesting one!
If there are any other airline or commercial pilots on here it would be great to speak with you also.
Thanks,
Nick

Best wishes to you, Nicholas! Sounds like you have done all the research you needed and picked what is right for you! I had AVR with tissue valve to replace bicuspid on 12/1 and all is well currently. My surgeon implanted a slightly larger valve with the plan that I will have a valve in valve transcatheter replacement when I need the tissue valve replaced, thus avoiding a second open heart surgery. My *hope* is that they will have human tissue valves when I need next surgery (they are growing them in labs now)! Was pleased with this option and so very thankful for technology and all of the great research that is happening for people with valve issues! I hope your surgery goes smoothly and you have a restful recovery!
Thank you for your kind words. I think you're right though, with the advancements in medicine and science, in the years to come what will be offered will definitely give us a few more options. All the best with your recovery :)
Emily Rowley I'm from Australia too but all the way from the other side.

Neil Collins Hi Nicholas. Good luck with your surgery. Making the decision on the valve is one of the most difficult parts of this journey. I am a pilot as well and underwent surgery last November with a tissue valve at age 44. I am still waiting to get back my medical but fingers crossed by the summer. There is a pilot from Australia on here who did get a mechanical valve....I think he's back flying now.
If you have any questions about the process or career with a wonky heart valve feel free to email me at jumpy737@gmail.com
You'll be back to normal in no time. I'm back to running 12+ km and training for a triathlon this Summer....
