Dave Raynor Hey Peter, I have to say that one of my greatest fears was the thought of coughing after surgery. But when I did the next day...it didn't bother me at all. In fact I was somewhat overwhelmed. I wasn't jacked up on pain meds either. So I think it's like it's said. Each patient has their own level of healing. Also the overall recovery was not too bad except! About day two of being back home I became extremely tired. I could barely walk to the bathroom so my wife loaded me up and I went in for an EKG. If you could have seen the technicians face reading the results, you would have known there was big trouble. So I went back into the hospital and they took me into the same OR they did my angiogram in and stuck this huge needle in my side to drain out all this fluid that have gathered around my heart. After that...It was all down hill and with the exception of a few mandatory appointments...I've been fine and on the mend for 8 months now. Let me know how it all works out. DR

Dave Raynor By the way, as I'm sure you well know. Saving your organic valve is a very good thing. Ever hear of the "Ross procedure?"
Dave Raynor Are you also having your aortic root repaired?
Peter Linn Dave, thanks, and yes, the plan is the David valve sparing procedure. My valve appears to be fine.

Dave Raynor That is a really good thing. As I understand it...you will have a much greater length of life span. Or at least valve trouble free. Plus blood pressure issues are better with your organic parts. Or as many as you can keep. That's what I have read and heard anyway.

Dave Raynor I have been away from this site for a while Peter so I'm guessing your questions have been answered organically. Let me know. My recovery was pretty straight forward. I never experienced chest or sternum pain even when I coughed. My only set back was about two days after I got home I didn't have the energy to walk so my wife took me into the clinic. They did an EKG and rushed me back to the hospital. They gave me happy drugs and stuck a very long needle into the left side of my chest and pull out excessive fluids that was preventing my heart from working properly. After that...It was just rest and heal.
