Pumphead After Open Heart Surgery: What Should Patients Know?

Following open heart procedures that require the use of the cardiopulmonary bypass machine (aka the Pump), patients have complained about cognitive decline. Patients have expressed a slowness, being dizzy, and feeling as if they are in a "fog-like" state. To learn more about this potential post-operative complication, which is commonly referred to as Pumphead, we interviewed Dr. Patrick McCarthy, the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Northwestern Medicine, to learn the latest information and research about the potential causes and the realities of Pumphead for heart surgery patients.
