Check out the blood in the urine, big guy. Who knows what the heck is causing it but you want to eliminate any setbacks. You have had enough dips in your recovery. This is your favorite stern brother on the east coast! I can not go into my surgery with you anything else but healthy! Thanks for going public. Please let us know. Best.

Oh Ernie! This is way too freaky passing blood!! What do drs say about this? The more stories I read the more I am convinced that no one dr knows everything and they don't communicate enough or do enough studies out of their field. atm I have balance problems and the surgeon just shrugs his shoulders. However, on this site 100s of cardiac patients have experienced this. So I dunno we just have to keep on keeping on and support one another. So puuuhleeese check out your current prob. thinking of you. Gabi x
I felt pretty tired and wiped out today. I don't now if that has anything to do with the blood in the urine, but I'll be calling my doctor tomorrow just in case.

Hey bud, keep recovering well. You are my only hope of meeting your leader.
I believe walking and pacing the activities to not lose ground if possible and progress and little more each day or three has really worked for me. Take it at your pace bro, I cheated with a mini sternotomy and no other health factors and even then it is a little frustrating to feel good in the mornings and sometimes having to slow way down in the afternoon cause I could feel the tiredness coming and the fear of my wife getting on me for pushing to hard., lol. Thinking of you, keep it up.
Ernie Keen I'm the opposite. I'm usually tired in the mornings and have more energy in the evening.
I'm not sure why you signed up for ohs, but I was bored and had never done it before, so I thought, what the heck, let's give it a try. Seems like everybody was doing it. :)

Hi Ernie:
Glad to know you are doing better. I am 8 weeks post surgery and still find that my incision hurts with exercise and activity. Maybe all those protein drinks you have talked about are a help!
Regarding driving, my hospital discharge information said that I could drive after 4 weeks. However, the cardio rehab nurse said that most doctors, similar to your doctor, recommend against driving for the first 90 days, or until your cardiologist says you can drive. They also prefer that you be in the back seat. They worry about potential injury to your sternum from accidents, airbags, etc. Fortunately, my hubby can drive me. I still can't easily turn my head to look behind me, so I can't see myself risking myself or others in heavy traffic.
That being said, each one recovers differently.
My doctor also said it was ok to have a glass of wine with dinner (for blood thinning purposes of course) and I have had no problems with wine or cocktails that we enjoy on the weekends with family and friends. I haven't had any problems with interaction with the pain killers as I don't take them at the same time--and, of course, I am not driving at those times.
I continue to enjoy your posts.
Take care!
I don't have any chest pain and can turn my head easily, so I think I should be able to get the OK to drive soon. I'll see if I can get the OK from either my cardiologist or my regular doctor.
I'm not sure my doctor will give me the OK to drive AND the OK to drink. I'll have to try and convince him I'm not going to do both at the same time!
Glad you enjoy my posts. Continued healing. Keep smiling.

Ernie Keen Hi Brian, I'm glad you enjoyed my journal entries.
I can't tell you what to do, but I can tell you what I did, and I listened to my doctors.
I didn't show any symptoms either other than getting winded quickly when I did real physical stuff. Heart surgeon and cardiologist both told me to take it easy before surgery because I could die suddenly if the valve gave out.
I decided to have surgery while I was younger because I could heal quicker, and I had good insurance coverage. Who knows where I would be or what could happen in a couple of years. I figured it was better to be safe than sorry.
Discuss it with loved ones and your doctors, and the decision is yours.

Ernie Keen Yep. At least 2 weeks it was indispensable having someone there to help out in so many ways you don't realize. Plus, it's a real relief knowing someone is around to help. Lots of little and big things they help you with that really helps you to be able to heal quickly and properly without hurting yourself. You feel good and feel like you can do more than you should, and it helps to have somebody there to grab, lift, reach, clean, take notes, and remind you of things you should and shouldn't do as well as help remember things you need to ask the doctor or that the doctor has told you. Anesthesia messes with your concentration and emotions more than you think and it lasts longer than you would expect.
Mom, my roommate, and my friends like Brian and neighbor Sally help in so many ways that you can't appreciate enough. Your support group is so KEY to recovery, just as Adam Pick points out in his book.

I've been overloading on protein and making sure I get some good calcium for healing my sternum and wound. I drink Boost for extra protein, and I also make choc/banana/peanut butter smoothy now and then with an extra scoop of protein powder.
