Hi Anne Marie, I used a $60 "zero gravity recliner" which is portable, fits in trunk of car, weighs 20 lbs, has infinite adjustment and worked perfect after my surgery at Cleveland clinic. I did put some foam rubber on the recliner and covered that with a sheet attached with some bungee cords. I was able to get in and out of the recliner without any assistance after the surgery. This rig is far superior to my $500 leather recliner at home. Because it is very light weight you can take it to a hotel if needed. By the way I was a patient at Penn for many years and remember your surgeron who has an excellent reputation.
Wish you well on your journey. Bill H

Hi Anne Marie:
I had a mitral valve repair (sternotomy) at Univ. of Penn. Hospital in 2009.
My surgeon, Dr Bavaria, and all the staff there were wonderful.
My hospital experience was great! They are very patient- oriented, and make every effort to keep you pain-free and very comfortable. I only needed pain meds. for 3 days.
The hospital procedures were so comprehensive- it gave me much confidence during my stay there.
I was there for 8 days, instead of the usual 5 days, due to low blood platelets (a pre-surgery condition). The staff did thoughtful little things to make the longer stay more pleasant.
When you go to the hospital, remind yourself that you will be in very good hands! So try to relax, and trust the expert staff to do their jobs. Your "job" will be to focus on your recovery.

Anne Marie Kelly Thank you for this comment. This is my first time as a hospital patient - and I agree that UPenn's organization is incredible. I do feel very grateful that my NJ insurance allows me to go to Penn!! Anne Marie
