"This was for a third surgery to replace my mechanical mitral valve. They were not looking forward to it as they predicted much blood loss. The valve replacement itself seemed straightforward but the right artery dissected during removal of cannula and the diaphragm tore. Before surgery, I was hallucinating pretty badly from the endocarditis and was becoming anxious about getting surgery. Doctor Rubens was reassuring although he looked worried from what I remember I signed consent forms for surgery after emergency intubation for pulmonary edema, then my mind took a few days off. The NG tube was affecting my ability to swallow doctor Rubens came by on his daily rounds ordered a peg port for feeds and two days later i was able to swallow and was discharged. From what I have read in the surgical reports he and his team spent two days doing surgery on someone they gave an even chance at surviving. A chance is all one can ask for, doctor Rubens and his team gave it to me."
