Hi Cap'n
Thanks for your message. We will be staying at the Intercontinental, on the CC campus. They have bus service to the hospital. My day starts on Monday the 15th at 8am with fasting labs, then in order, EKG, xray, and CT scan. Am told I can eat after the CT scan!! How nice. They've scheduled everything 15-25 minutes apart if you can believe that. Echocardiogram at 10a (it' probably be in the afternoon). All day Tuesday is devoted to the cath. Then they let me rest up before Wed. and my pre-op clearance. Dr Gillinov is scheduled to see me at 12:30, so guess he's expecting to be done with your surgery by then!! Good news for you.I expect I'll take up most of his day on Thursday. I assume you have not the great doctor in person? It will seem odd to meet him the day before my surgery and not sooner, but have complete faith in him and his expertise.Like someone said, Robin W could have picked anyone but he chose our doctor. You will be up and about before me, but I will be checking the walkers going by my room and looking for a Heff robe. I'll have a light blue one. You'll probably see my daughters before you see me. Both tall, one blond, one brunet. They'll keep my hubby (Pete) company as they wait for me to get into recovery. I told them when I finally do come to, want 3 big smiles and thumbs up.Did I tell you we are boaters, but the best kind, sailors. Had a small day sailer for a few years and then chartered in the BVI several times. We always heard about the "stink potters" and the "rag pullers" Take care and keep posting.

Well, glad your humor is in full force!! Time's getting closer isn't it? I've learned so much from those who've gone to heart-land before us. This forum has been a blessing. Just to let you know, went to my dentist yesterday (had been there 6 months ago for a cleaning) and found there were no problems!! I assume going forward you'll be checking in with your dentist on a regular basis to maintain all the work that's been done. Keep posting.

Hi Capt'n,
If you haven't seen it yet, read Joe's journal entry - really helpful. Re Cheryl's note - are you really flying after surgery? We have opted to drive home (because we can, no water to cross)so once I get the all clear for discharge we will hire a merc estate for the 8 hour drive back, with me hugging a pillow all the way. It's freeway so should be a smooth ride. Pee stops will have to be behind bushes in laybys so that Steve can help! He has bought me a she- wee - a contraption that you are supposed to be able to use standing up but it had to have been invented by a man - it will never be able to handle my output! Ah the things that we have to go through in the name of love!!
Warmest wishes

Hi Capt'n
Just dropping by to send you some well wishes and hope you are keeping it together. St. Patty's Day will be extra special this year. My husband and I were commenting on the fact that soon after your surgery you and your wife will probably be flying back home. That's quite a trip after that type of surgery. Pack light. Ahoy there Capt'n!
Thanks for my note - you still write a funny story, even when you think that you're grumpy! I'm starting to get a little snippy myself, it's all the last minute small things that seem to take so much time and energy. And I'm definitely a bit twitchy after watching the video. Maybe too much information. Must remember to breathe...

Hello there Captain! My husband and I, as well as many of our friends, loved your message about the smooth waters and cold beer! I just posted a picture of us in my journal from a recent deep sea fishing expedition at my husband's request. He wanted you to see it.
We'll be thinking of you. Keep smiling!

Hi Bill, thanks for your post in my journal. The technical stuff is tough and your heart is too good for just a bilge pump. Do you still think our famous Dr G will be able to an aortic repair or will you need a new valve? Keep your humor, you obviously make us all chuckle. Spoke to my brother in law today. They live an hour south of Cleveland, we will be staying with them for a few days before and after my surgery. Apparently it was snowing there today. Come March, guess they could get snow but probably won't last as long. Keep smiling, glad the pipes are clean!!

Hi Bill
I just couldn't end my workday without seeing your update. Now that I've had my laugh (at your expense) I'll go and make dinner before heading off to Ballroom dance lessons with hubby.
Your numbers are way too technical for me but it sounds as if you need heart surgery. Next step, buy pj's so you don't give anyone anything to talk about!

Hi Capt'n
Oh, your sense of humour is inbred so probably taking a lickin' from your wife at the casino threw you off. Lucky for you she sprung for dinner or it would have been grilled cheese for Valentine's.
We laugh a lot in our house too and it helps us both get through this. Your sense of humour on this site gives all of us a smile. I hope you take the time to keep a journal of your thoughts when you can't get to the computer because I wouldn't want to miss a thing.
We tape King of Queens, Coach and Two and a Half Men and when we need a laugh we go there. At least you'll be recovered in time to get the boat in the water. Take care Bill. Cheryl, Ontario

Hey there Captain! My mantra is "life is too short - eat dessert first"!
Yeah, they left a few of those electrodes on me too. I think the techs all play a game of "let's see if the patient finds all the electrodes"!
Yes, we are the "Mended Hearts Club" and we are proud!
Hope you had an awesome Valentine's Day!
This time next week I will be prepping for my visit to Hillcrest town.

Hi Capt'n
My support group took me out for lunch and bought me some flowers. And then put me right to work stripping wallpaper and cleaning and now, 5 pm we're getting ready to paint. My husband is a workhorse. I'm wearing my pulse wristwatch and when the numbers go up, I'm AWOL. He fell asleep watching the golf so I had a few minutes to drop in here before we are back on our feet.
I liked your wording - we are a "Mended Hearts" club. I see you didn't get to Fiji yet either. Soon though, soon.
Hope you and your wife are enjoying Valentine's Day. It does have special meaning this year.

Hi Capt'n
I was thinking the same thing - the doctor and dentist are in cahoots! They all want a share. My surgeon never even asked me about my teeth - no one did. I see the dentist regularly twice a year but still, no one asked. The infection point is well taken though. Naw, you want your own teeth for as long as you can have them. Besides, as you get older you'd probably put them somewhere and not be able to find them. And bethides, you wouldn't want to lithsp.
How is your wife handling all this or is she good at hiding her feelings? Sometimes it's harder on the spouses. You both need lots of hugs and prayers even more so. You both are in mine. Cheryl, Ontario

Hi Captain Bill,
Well I would have guessed that you would just weather that one out (I'm still complaining a week later). Another marker bouy behind you! Sorry - I'm not at all sure the jargon is right but I reckon corny will still make you smile. The dental work is because gum disease is the easiest way to heart muscle infection so having the all clear before surgery is a good precaution. Look forward to your next log - that'll be the date of surgery then?
Warmest wishes

Hi Capt'n
About the dental appointments - do your surgeons recommend getting all the dental work done before surgery? Just wondering as I've seen a couple of others who were doing the same thing.
My appointment was 3 weeks post-surgery and I cancelled saying I didn't want anyone resting their tools on my chest just yet. My dentist has a habit of parking her tools and whatnot on my chest. I'm due now in a couple of weeks.
Glad you passed heart cath. Did you watch? Cheryl, Ontario
On February 11, 2010...
Praying for you today during your heart cath procedure. Mine wasn't too bad at all. The groin thing was the NOT fun part, plus laying still for 4 hours. But I had a lot of fun with my family that evening.

On February 10, 2010...
Have you ever had a colonoscopy? You don't want a 2 for 1. The prep will kill you. You may stay awake long enough during the cath to see it on the monitor and of course feel the warm (hot) flush you'll feel when the put the dye in and before you know it, it'll be over! When I have it done at the CC that'll be my 3rd cath. Give us the update when you're able.

Love the pics. So which one is the real you? With your sense of humour you should be making notes and guest write for Adam. Wishing you good luck on your cath Thursday. I agree about the good doctor, know we are 2 very fortunate people to have him as our surgeon. My cardio here in FL recommended me to him--how about you? Will be staying at my brother-in-law's home for a couple of days before my testing, so he'll drive us there. He lives about an hour south of Cleveland. Will stay there after discharge again before flying back. So, guess we have our own "limo". Hope your cath goes well. Remember to keep ice on the area and stay flat for a few hours, but guess they'll tell you all that. My cath will be done at the CC on one of my 3 days of testing. Will really have those relaxation tapes going!! You'll be up and about before me, so look for the room with the 2 pretty girls (our daughters) and a gray haired man (hubby) who I hope is not too worried. Enjoy your posts, you are one funny man.

Hi William,
The journals are interesting and helpful. My husband Richard likes to hear the updates. It is hard when I have to write for him while he is laying there in ICU. It sounds like everyone is doing well. He is too really just some "not totally unpredictable" setbacks, but not fun nevertheless. I too have been following Duane - for Richard as they wrote back & forth a little before their surgeries - they both had them on the same day - Duane in FL - Richard the other end of the states - MA.

Well, it's my time. I'm getting ready to leave tomorrow for my mitral valve repair surgery. Honestly, I'm glad it's finally here. You can only hold your breath for so long. Thank you for your posts to my guestbook and for helping add some "fun" to all this. I appreciate your kindness and your prayers.
I am signed up for your updates and will pray for you and follow your progress toward your March 17 surgery @ Cleveland Clinic. At least I will have resurfaced by then. Are you and Fran and your families gonna have a party in Cleveland? That's way cool! Do take care, and God bless! Off I go...

Hi Again Bill
Thanks for the speedy reply. I find it amazing how Americans seem to be able to pick and choose doctors the way they do - a concept unknown to us here in Canada. I believe I read in Adam's book that in picking out a doctor, you want to look for one who does several hundred a year. In writing to Adam at the time, I didn't dare tell him that my surgeon does about 200 surgeries per year, the breakdown being about 160 by-passes and the other 40 broken up between valves etc. Those figures were given to me by the doctor's secretary. I tried very hard NOT to dwell on that. I did ask around and the doctor came highly recommended but still, 40 valve jobs breaks down to about maybe 1 per week. I had to laugh just thinking what Adam or any of his readers would think about those figures. My surgeon turned out to be great and better still, I survived. But, there you Americans are all looking for experience etc. etc. and many of you were winding up in hospitals with doctors I could only dream about. I am very impressed. But, our health systems are totally different. I had to just believe the hospital wouldn't keep on staff a doctor that constantly screws up so I kept my fingers crossed and prayed a lot.
I was asked by the research department at the hospital if I wanted to pioneer a new heart ring. I wrote Adam asking what he knew about that ring but didn't hear back. The ring was in the research stages with Europe having implanted about 3000 so their trials were over. The States had implanted 650 and their trials were over. Canada had to implant 200 so 3 hospitals (mine was one) were in the trial. I asked how many Canada had implanted (this being near the end of the 2 year trial period) and all of Canada had used 40. I asked how many my hospital had implanted of the 40 - NONE. My decision was made - use the old tried and true ring. This wasn't a decision I felt I wanted to make. Take into consideration though our much lower population. My hospital is known as a heart hospital so I just had to go with it and hope for the best. We do not have private hospitals or private health care here. We all get the same level of care and expertise and the cost is paid for out of everyone's income taxes. For the most part we here in Canada like our system.
My brother had the larger boat - 42' and it even had air-conditioning, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, livingroom. It was cool except I know it cost a fortune to run. He was on Lake Simcoe which is a huge lake here and sometimes very unpredictable.
Our weather here in Southern Ontario is much like New York's except we might get less snow at this side of Lake Ontario than does Buffalo. Yeah, it's cold right now - probably around 28F but we don't have one drop of snow right now. Usually at this time of the year we are waiting for a bit of a thaw so we can get some water off the top of the pool cover. My husband is soon off to Tennessee golfing with his buddies. We usually take some time in Florida or to an island somewhere but this year I think I'm just staying closer to home. We have lots of friends and family who have places in Florida but I'm just not ready to travel. I think I'd have a hard time getting affordable travel insurance so I'm staying put. I survived so I think I'll get back to spending my money on redecorating seeing as how I'm going to be the bride that gets to use it!
I loved seeing the various Robin Williams interviews and stand-up about his valve job. He's a hoot. By the way, your wife has a great sense of humour as well. Your home must really rock!
Take care. Cheryl, Ontario
On January 25, 2010...
Hi Bill
I'm curious about how you went about getting in to see the doctor at the Cleveland Hospital. Do you just call his office and make an appointment or do you start out with a recommendation from your family doctor or cardiologist? In Canada we don't get to the top until we've followed the chain beginning at the family doctor who recommends you to a cardiologist. You can suggest the cardiologist you wish to see though. The cardiologist then puts you onto an in between doctor at the hospital who conducts/organizes and reads the tests and then he moves you up the chain again. We can search out and request certain specialists but we have to be recommended or we can't get in. Just curious. Your roomies at the hospital will certainly enjoy having you around. What's your boat - motor or sail and what body of water do you run on? My brother and dad had big boats but myself, I'm afraid of spiders so never wanted to sleep on them. Cheryl, Ontario
