Richard,
Sorry to hear your headed for another surgery. I chose the mechanical valve in Nov 2011 at 53. Doctors told me I should be good for 20-25 years.
I know everyone is different, but I've had no issues with the blood thinner and I only go in every 5 weeks now for it to be checked. I hope you the same success.
Sidney Nash posted a note for Richard that says:
Richard,
Sorry to hear you are so soon to get replacement valve. I did ask my surgeon, Dr. Hughes at Duke, how much riskier a second surgery would be from the first. He told me the surgeries were very similar in risk (< 1%). Hope this helps. You will do fine, second time will be much easier.
Richard Volpe You are the man. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I too have had my aortic valve replaced twice. In 12/10, the original was replaced with a pig valve. In April of 2013, a mechanical valve was put in. My pig valve began to fail and with surgery they found that the pig valve had endocarditis. The mechanical valve is doing fine at this time. I chose the pig valve originally to be able to get off of cummadin. Like your situation, all arteries were clear which was the good news.
Richard Volpe Wow im not alone. I'm so glad that everything worked out for u. Now it's my turn.
Thanks Tom all the best.

Richard, no date yet. I go to Cardio the 7th of March, so that is my deadline on the 50 pounds. I am already classified as "severe" and he has already talked replacement valve and other test. So I feel that he didn't go to the next step as he wanted me to lose weight. I can't exercise much so it is cut portions and types of food. No cakes, no Chicago hot dogs, etc.... just basics. This is a must do for me. This time for you is going to do the trick and let you get on with your life as it should be. The very best of everything and you are in my prayers for smooth surgery and recovery.

Hi Richard, I had a my aortic valve replaced 4.5 months ago with a tissue valve. How did you find out yours was leaking? I can not imagine how you must have felt when hearing the news even though it was 3 years later.
Richard Volpe I found out by my yearly check up. It was like someone kicking me in the gut. here I am in Cleveland I'm going to be in the best of hands and that's all I can do, I did my Part. All the best to u.

Richard, sorry about the redo.. 16 weeks ago I had a redo that only lasted 12 weeks! (I got a bad endocarditis infection that ruined the first. I was pretty pissed myself. But after much crying and worry, the second surgery wasn't that bad and I feel grateful we have a "fixable" condition. I pray you do well, and keep posting.
Richard Volpe It really sucks when you have to go through this journey again - I'm so happy everything worked out for you.. Thank you Sandy for your kind words.
