Jimmy, How long we're you at the pre-op? I just can't imagine what takes so long.
My morning was a little busy. The Hospital is right next to Dr. Andrews’s office so I had to stop by there 1st to sign the consent form and then watch a little video.
Then off to the hospital when 1st stopped by admitting and they asked a series of questions (one note I was asked the same questions about 15 times that day).
Then off to my Pulmonary Function test. They draw blood and then do a series of breathing test.
From there I went to Pre-Surgical where I meet several nurses. I meet the Cardiac Nurse that will keep my family updated. I meet the anesthesiologist and they asked a bunch of questions and told me what medication I can take on the morning of my surgery. I saw another nurse that loaded all my medication into the system. Another person stopped in to ask some follow up registration questions. Some then came in took my BP and O2 levels and temp. Then a nurse came in and did an EKG. I was given a map of where to go and when on Monday. I was also given a booklet that has a lot good info on the before/during and after on what to expect.
This was taken for an X-ray and then off to the lab to give more blood and a Urine sample.
That was it. All and All at the hospital I would say it was almost 3 hrs.

Jimmy,
The Coumadin is no biggie. I have a home INR monitor and test weekly. The mechanical valve was the way to go for me. My surgeon told me a tissue valve would not last 10 years in a young active runner and tennis player. I believed him and opted for the "ticker". My kids think its funny that I sound like a wristwatch. I pretty much eat whatever I want and just keep an eye on the INR.

Jimmy,
Take it from another Jimmy, it doesn't pay to worry. Worrying never accomplishes anything. You have to answer the bell when you hear it. And you will. Recovery can be a long, strange journey. You will be emotionally exhausted at times. Good times come soon. I am a better person for having been through open heart surgery. I look at life today. I don't live for tomorrow and I damn sure don't think about next week, month, or year. I never leave the house without kissing my kids or my wife and I live a slower pace. I AM a better person. You will be too.

Hi Jimmy, I just read your last journal entry and let me say "ditto". Try to imagine what we would be like now if this site didn't exist...not a pretty site on this end! We all have family and friends that understand to some extent...but not really, they can't unless they have been through exactly the same thing. For now, I am trying to put myself in my daughter's place, the future caregiver and don't talk much about the surgery or being afraid, etc. I save that for you guys! I'm trying not to worry about the surgery, saving my energy for recovery, at least I have some control over that. So...I guess we will count down together my friend.
