It is likely you will miss one day but once your up the next day, they can bring your toothbrush, a cup of water and the infamous hospital curved for you to spit into. Same with the listerine. You can prob floss as well. Depends on nausea level, when you last took pain meds, etc. I did, not try to stand at the bathroom sink for the first couple days, did not have the stamina. I spent the majority of my stamina walking and it helped my recovery. Usually the second day, they remove the catheter and you have to make your way to and from the bathroom. Between that and walking, I did not try to stand for, many other things until I got more stamina. Being in good shape going in helps a lot too.
Jim Jones Thanks, Aubrey. I will give it my best effort for sure. Have a great day tomorrow.

Really good point brought up by Chris. I learned from a dentist about 6 years ago that the combination of brushing your teeth and tongue, flossing daily and using listerine daily without rinsing it out is a HUGE health boost. I have not had a virus in the 6 years I have been doing this. The flossing removes the plaque between the teeth that harbors bacteria and the listerine kills any bacteria left. I am a little particular about using the regular listerine vs. some of the new sweeter ones. They use a unique combination of four ingredients that have stood the test of time. I do not use the brown original flavor though, it tastes like gasoline, lol. I am also a little more dedicated to this since infection on the valve is one of the reasons for early failure of a valve. I am a believer in this. Looking forward to hearing about your great outcome.

Hi Jim: Sounds like you are well prepared and have lots of good advice from our fellow HVJ'rs.
he only thing I can add is to try to brush your teeth every day. I didn't do it the first few days because it was such an effort, but then I developed a yeast infection in my mouth. There were probably other factors as well--as I had fluid on my lung which made it hard for me to breath.
I found that there wasn't much "down" time in the hospital. I rented a TV for my stay and found that worked fine for the few times when I was awake and wasn't busy.
Enjoy your shopping spree and dinner with your wife. You won't be feeling like doing either for a while after!

I went in with shorts, a tee shirt and sneakers. I wore a hospital gown the entire time. I brought my lap top, as the hospital TV offerings were not all that promising. They did have Wi-Fi which really helped pass the time. Of course bring a tooth brush, tooth paste and electric razor. That's about all you'll need. And, get ready to be awoken several times during the night as they take your temp and check your vitals. So, your hospital stay will be a series of 2-3 hour naps. Good luck!!!

I took and used the following
1. PJ bottoms, never used the tops, gowns are better with pocket for the portable EKG transmitter
2. Needed a robe, hospital was cold and walking was harder the first few times because I would get very cold and start to shake.
3. Took new bedroom shoes to not bring germs into the hospital with old bedroom shoes. Hospital socks ok but shoes were better
4. Took IPad and some magazines, a crossword puzzle book and used iPad to read sci fi book too. I used them all because sometimes at 3 am, you need something to do waiting to go back to sleep
5. Toothbrush,toothpaste, floss, hairbrush/comb
6. Loose clothes to wear home.
7. Never used underwear but did use the PJ bottoms. Too much trouble to manage first few days to go to bathroom by yourself. I was holding the pillow to keep the chest from hurting so had to manage some things one handed.
8. I ate graham crackers to reduce the nausea from anesthesia, whatever is good to you if you need it. Also was good snack at 3 am. Helps to have anything on your stomach with the pills.
9. A pen and small pad would have been handy to write down notes for doctor, get info from nurses, write down phone numbers from people you meet there, etc...
Couple of recommendations as well.
Stay out of waiting rooms. They have more germs than you want to be exposed to
Find the pain medication timing and insure the nurses know what time your meds are due. I was on one tablet every three hours. Their schedule was every 4 hours and to give you two pills. I would call the nurse when it was time to insure the pain was managed to keep me active.
Ask about every tablet you get and why. You learn a lot about what your stats are and can understand and guide the situation.
After about the 2nd or 3rd day post op, ask about bowel movement and possibly laxatives. Pain meds put your intestines to sleep and a bowel movement is one of the hurdles to get released.
I always ask about what my heart rate and blood pressure was to be able to understand what they were balancing with all the pills.
It sounds more complex than it really is. The hospital should have all this down to a fine art and you info is for you to understand.
I have faith for you moving forward.

Hey Jim,
Thats GREAT news! It means a shorter op time and probably less pain as there will be less manipulation of your innards! Glad is was easy..mine was too..radial all the way! Our time is tick rocking up on us...I feel very calm, enjoying some gorgeous weather. I am not sleeping very well..just seem to be awake a lot. Oh well, plenty of time to catch up later. We will sail thru this experience and then laugh about how terrible we feel post op. I am looking forward to our post op exchanges.Have a restful day now and take it easy the next day or two. The third day after my cath I suddenly felt very tired!

Jim Jones Hey Lynn
Agree. Love the results and love radial. Was concerned that they may have an issue with my wrists. Did not sleep well last night. 2 hours sleep then was wide awake. My mind knew it was game time. Tossed and turned till 430am. I could tell from my response to the procedure that OHS will be the big leagues.indeed, our post op commentary will be quite interesting. BTW, Brigham's 75 Francis Street admitting office at 540am looked like Penn station at 5pm. So glad you are calm. Enjoy the weather. Will run again Thursday pm if healing goes well. Ciao.

Jim Jones Hey, I have the easy job. I play the role of the patient. You have the far tougher job - my caregiver! That should be fun! Plus you will own the journal while I am in the hospital. I will wrest it away from you while still under a heavy dose of painkillers once we return home. Play your cards right and the folks here will demand your return and vote me off! Ciao. XXXOOO- me

Jim -- just taking a moment to send you an atta boy, you've been so supportive over the last weeks of my recovery. Staying busy is key -- it really helped me keep the nerves down. AND GET TO THE GYM. You will miss it in the weeks you can't go (I sure do) and the best pre-surgery advice I had was to really ramp up my lower body workout...it has been invaluable. Thinking about you and praying with you as you walk through these next weeks.

It is SO GOOD to hear from you! Are you ok now?
I ran yesterday and today and plan to do so over the weekend. Agree, exercise is key! Have my cardiac cath on 10/15. Hope it is radial so can get back on the road sooner. I am also thinking of you and hoping for a smooth and quick recovery for you. We need to get your voice heard soon better than ever. I have listened to some YouTubes of Pavarotti- what a wonderfully rich and textured voice. His control is impressive. All the best and thanks for your kind thoughts. Keep praying for me.

Jim son. Your recovery will be just fine! In no time at all you will be rushing to get back to work and Lise will have to hold u down. At the hospital they will make you do lots of things you won't like...such as cough a lot, holding a pillow to your chest . making you walk down the hall with your gown flapping in the back !! Eat food you would probably prefer something better! lots of good stuff like that...love

Just kidding.
Jeff is right, pain meds will back you up, so if you eat good fiber before surgery, that might help get things moving through faster after surgery. Your bowels remove liquid from fecal matter, so the longer it's in there, the smaller and drier it will be and harder to push out. Laxatives, stool softener, prune juice and I also made sure to eat yogurt when I put in my food orders. They give you some tough antibiotics to wipe out bacteria, including the good bacteria you need for digestion, so go for the yogurt on the menu.

Jim, btw Ernie's practical tips are right on.
Based on my experience, I recommend people do Not go for a big pre-surgery meal in the last couple of days before surgery. Eating a little lighter the 2 days before surgery is my recommendation.

Jim, it's been eight weeks. I'm feeling pretty good. Still aches and pains, I can make myself sore if I do much lifting. My physical endurance is at about 75% of before surgery. Mentally getting back to work has been a great help. So overall I'd say I'm at 80%. Weeks 3 to 4 I improved a lot, it was a step change. I went from lots of sleep, rest and regular pain meds and time in the recliner to being able to start doing a few things. Please ask if there is anything you want to know about my experience so far.

When you are IN the hospital, make sure nurses leave the stuff you need to reach in a reachable distance BEFORE they leave the room, and that you are placed high enough in the bed to reach the controls easily to manipulate the bed. Also, make sure they close the curtain well enough before they leave the room. I hated having to push the button just to get someone to close the curtain so I could have privacy to use the hand urinal.
It's nice to have company visit, but it can tire you out, so make sure the visits are short and not too many people in a day. I know I should have had more nap time while I was in the hospital.
Yes to laxatives and stool softener.
I felt hot a lot of the time, so they gave me a fan, turned down my room temp, and I usually had a wet rag hanging off the bed to wipe my face, head and neck to help cool down.
