Jim, great news!! Hey, go with the "anticlimactic"! Love it.
Just curious, why does the whole body react as if it's "been hit by a truck" after this type of surgery? Is that because the heart had that 6-hour downtime during surgery? Or something else?

Jim Jones Hey Tom
I have not seen the research but I suspect you have three main contributors:
1. 6 hours or more of anesthesia
2. The process of slowing the body down, being on bypass and bringing the body back up and
3. Most importantly the surgery itself. The surgery is designed to heal. The body however I believe responses as if it has experienced a major injury. The body does everything to heal itself. It is that injury/healing response that longer term, in my opinion, extends the "hit by a truck" feeling.
Cheers and have a great thanksgiving!

Thank you! Yes, this chapter was different and a bit difficult to write. What I was looking to communicate is that unexpected stuff most likely will come up that will not be reflected in the vitals or monitor. Some items may be personal and awkward to discuss. But the best thing to do is to tell the medical staff ASAP so they can take action. They have seen it all. The important thing is not to let anything halt your progress. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Susan!

Yep. You made me proud. Especially since I had the exact same thing happen to me. Only they didn't wheel me away to test me. Urologist called for an ultrasound, so a lady showed up in my room with the machine to do the test. Now I hadn't had anybody show up in my room for about an hour, but as soon as I drop my trousers and she starts doing the ultrasound, there must have been 5 or 6 people came by the room. Nurse comes in with my breakfast, sees what's going on and says."Oops, sorry. I'll be back later." 5 minutes later a nurse comes in to take my blood pressure, sees what's going on and says."Oops, sorry. I'll be back later." 5 minutes later the physical therapist shows up, she sees what's going on and says."Oops, sorry. I'll be back later." After the 5th or so person walks in on us, I tell the lady doing the ultrasound there hadn't been anybody in my room for over an hour and now EVERYBODY shows up while I'm laying here naked getting an ultrasound of my scrotum. She said that inevitably happens every time. I think each nurse sent in another one every 5 minutes or so to get a free peep show. I should have charged. They did the test to make sure I didn't have an infection, because they definitely don't want you to get an infection anywhere in your body while you are recuperating from open heart surgery. The said I had a HYDROCELE, which was basically a build up of fluid in the scrotum. You did the right thing by telling someone about it. But at least you didn't give half the hospital a free peep show like I did. Only problem was, when your scrotum is swollen that big, it makes your penis look small in comparison. Now that there is no scrotum swelling, I may have to go back and give them a free show so they know it was just a matter of proportion.
Good healing Jim, and have a happy Thanksgiving.

My mind snapped quickly even given the time I was on bypass. There was no cloudiness or loss of memory. On the other hand, my body is running at 5 mph. I Look at the incision and love the healing. What I do not see is underneath and all the healing, reshaping and re-sycronization that has to occur. As a type A hard driver I have had a hard time downshifting. On a positive note, I do what I am told. 3 walks, natch. 3 PTs, natch. I'd rather have to dial back than find the drive to do things.

Jim my east coast Nov 5th friend, here I am! I am astounded by your strength! Seriously! I have no idea how you have been typing so much! Just read some of your postings. YOU ARE A DETERMINED ONE FOR SURE. Nothing will defeat you. I want to tell you about Bemer. It's an electromagnetic mat to increase microcirculation and it was developped by scientists in Germany, being officially used in hospitals to reduce post-surgery recovery time. It has also been used by the Olympic Swiss team as it makes people heal faster. http://www.bemer.co.za/joupapers_generalres.html
My friend Michelle who is an acquachiropractor and representative here in the west coast just brought me the mat and applicator so I can speed my healing. Read the articles and if it makes sense to you I can ask Michelle if there's a way to get you one. Yes, we have to be patient with healing time, nevertheless why not use all that technology offers? that's why I share useful information. Jim, you are a winner. And I am too. Yes, the blues hit occasionally. You become dependent of everybody, your body seems slow to recognize how your mind feels. I have been taking all that spare time to gently thank my heart for allowing the surgery to happen. Yes, surgery creates a bit of inner confusion I suppose, but the body has its own intelligence. The heart being the central intelligence headquarters has to re-organize its command over all other organs, tissues etc.. But I tell my heart: You've been noble to sacrifice going through this change - but not only you are benefitting all other organs to get full irrigation, but you will also not have to make this huge effort you were doing to get things going. Life will be easier pal! You deserve easier life and I deserve an easier life. We are one and we will get to a full beautiful functioning you have never dreamed of!
Talk to your heart, Jim.
And congratulations! Keep visualizing the future, all the good things you see yourself doing!

Anna, I believe you are also determined and optimistic. I think a lot of healing relates to attitude. I know, reading your posts, you have a great attitude.
I am learning a great deal during this time. I have never had major surgery. I have had to understand that my body requires much more healing than I anticipated. I see the scar healing and firmly believe I should at least be able to walk at a good pace for 5 miles. Of course, i can not at this time. This has been quite an adjustment for me. Actually Aubrey and I are both horrible liars and neither one of us is in good health at all. We both have one foot in the grave at this point, but we want to encourage everybody, so we're making up stories about how well our
recoveries are going. Damned Aubrey has to be a "one-ups-man" and claim that he's jetsetting all around the world already. That's alright. Next week I'm going to claim I'm starting training for a marathon and I'm already doing six 8 minute miles. And that's just warm up.
I'll also claim I'm having trouble sleeping. Mainly because my super-model girlfriend (and her girlfriend) are keeping me up all night.

So, continued good healing and keep the updates coming.

Jim Jones Hey, Selma, I love your writing. If you are not a writer, you should be! Yes, the sounds are indeed musical. My brain was highly activated. (translation, I was drugged up to my eyeballs). I was composing and viewing vivid, full color movies in my mind loosely woven around my environment. I correlated everything I saw ( or more likely thought I saw) with my own business and created a master presentation with CICU medical examples to make my points. I am a consultant who does a lot of public speaking. And as I observed what I thought I saw that night I said "well, here are marvelous examples for me to make my points". It all made wonderful sense at the time. I just wondered whether it may be too sensitive for some in the audience. Now, however, it doesn't matter. I can not remember one of my outstanding points! I must now start from scratch sans drugs! I am quiet sad. The funny thing is for me I never take any drugs at all. My body must have embraced the drug cocktail like a long lost, beloved friend. It still hasn't forgiven me for tapering to Tylenol. Cheers.

Jim,
I really don't remember much of my ICU time. I do remember my right tube gave me terrible pain and muscle spasms. I also remember doing a thumbs up to my family when I opened my eyes and had my oxygen mask on. I also remember ice chips...boy did I love those ice chips.
Like you I'm usually an 80 mph person and as of 6 weeks post op I'm probably a 45 mph person. Looking forward to getting back to my old self!

Jim I can't wait for the next chapter. Between you and Dan, your adventures in OHS are vitally interesting. Even though it is not an easy process, your stories show that it is possible, no matter what age or stage of life a patient is in. The real stories are what prepares us all for this life changing event. Thanks and have a super great day.

Your changing taglines make me think that you are a detective novel lead character. Do you write? Well done! Yes, I will write one more chapter of my stay. Dan's point is well made. The hospital stay is the same but different for all of us. I think any sort of advance info is helpful so when you see it you can say, ah, yes, I knew that is part of the experience. You are right, it is not easy. But it does get easier each day. Cheers.

Hey,
This pain med game is a mystery. I don't feel huge pain-it's tightness, bruising, incisional but hardly extreme. But when I stop the pain med, 6 hours later I really feel bad all, over. I spoke to my cardio today and he told me to keep, taking it for a while..I am almost 2 weeks post op. I realize the sooner imstopmthe better I will be but it's not quite happening that way yet!he gave me a script for sleep so I won't be taking pain med to sleep...I think that's a good idea (shades of Aubrey here).otherwise I am content. I am very tired today. The maids came, i went to pick something up, popped into the grocery store and then a friend visited! I can say all together that was too much! Tomorrow will be a rest day. I started to wean off Percocet but took it this afternoon and evening- not ready to quit 100% yet. Stay well.

Jim Jones Hey Lynn. Wonderful to hear from you. It would be great if you could journal your stay also. I was beat this morning. I thought something was wrong. Yesterday, I met the visiting nurse. Then went on 3 walks outside. And stopped hydromorphone after one early in th am. Watched 3 qtrs of the pats game, at no time did I feel I was pushing it. But the combo really affected me this am. By 3 pm I was feeling normal. I took a hydro at 7 pm. It does relax you but it may also make you too alert and perky?
I had misunderstood the directions for hydro. It says 4 hrs as needed. I thought it was 4 hrs religiously. So I popped one every 4 hrs for over 5 days. No wonder I felt no pain! Now, it will be Tylenol mostly with maybe 1 hydro a day. I mostly feel discomfort and tightness where the incision is sewn. You too stay well and we will do this together. Hi to Steve and Pug. ( is she still in CA?)

Hi,
I've been away from the forum for a while but came back just in time to read about your experiences at Mt. Sinai with Dr. Adams. It's so weird reading someone else writing about all the things I experienced back in May of 2012. Tree was the absolute best nurse I ever had. What an amazingly caring guy. When I could finally talk, he asked me if there was anything I wanted. I said, 'ice chips and a room with a view of Central Park.' He actually got me the room -- unfortunately it was only for one night but hey, beggars can't be choosers. Hope you'll check out my diary

Nice entry, I think Tree was the same one that took care of me (I only recall snapshots too like little photo memories), and then a lady after that. 100% agree on communication and what you want to know when you wake up. I remember waking up freezing, they were afraid I was going to pull the tube out, but all I wanted was a blanket. Then I remember after the tube was out some PT person came in while I was all drugged up had me up and moving and wondering why I was so wobbly...uh drugs have that effect on you.
