Hi Jeff
I too agree....a second opinion is the way to go...and like mom and dad said...a second opinion may give you some additional insight and more confidence..with your choosing.
I hold you in my prayers....
Love you
Brenda
Just woke up and of course first thing I do is chek your journal and my emails. Was surprised to find that you have decided to get a second opinion. YEAH! Dad and I have been talking about that for sometime. Why not ? Great idea. Even if you stay with your decision for Ross.....a second opinion may give you some additional insight and more confidence that you have made the right decision for you.
Jeffrey Shebovsky Thanks. I know. Just didn't want to add more confusion or doubt.

As someone said to me during this process (I think it was John Lund or JH), information is power. Even if you choose to ignore that information, you still have the power. So, good for you getting a second opinion. I just don't see it is a bad idea. Good luck. -Mitch Friedman
Jeff, having worked in healthcare for almost 40 years (yes I'm old) I always tell everyone: ALWAYS get a second opinion....even if you ignore it...get it. If it bothers your doctor that you want another opinion, get another doctor. But, being a doctor yourself I know that you know all that. I have heard of Dr. Accola, I think through Adam's website. I'm guessing if he doesn't do the ROSS, and I don't know that he doesn't, you may well get a different opinion, but you know that too. It's really the same for all of us, we have to make decisions based on what other people tell us or write about, but when it comes time to decide for ourselves, we have to listen to that little voice inside of us. If you think of it, I have a question you might ask. I don't know if the valve used to replace your pulmonary valve would ever need to be replaced, but if it does, do they think they can also do that using the transcatheter approach, or is that only for aortic valve? I see that the valve used in the transcatheter approach has a stainless steel frame that is left in place. Would a person then need to be on Coumadin therapy? I can't find anything that addresses that particular point, but I think that would make a difference in deciding between mechanical and tissue for the initial replacement. The benefit of tissue is not having to be on Coumadin, but would you end up on it eventually anyway if future surgery was done using the transcatheter approach? Just curious, will talk with Dr. G. about it when I meet him in March, but it is interesting question I think, haven't heard anyone mention it before. Good luck with your visit with Dr. Accola. Keep us posted.

Jeffrey Shebovsky You are so right about the second opinion. In fact, i now recall you mentioning that in your first post to me. Hi Jeff, glad to hear you had a good visit with the surgeon. Good luck on making your decision. I am having the same problem, I go back and forth from mechanical to tissue, back to mechanical. I am 63, not old but not young either. I just hate the thoughts of having surgery again at 78 or 80! I can barely stand the thoughts of having it now, lol. I know the docs believe the transcatheter approach will be perfected by then and available to everyone, but that is not a given. Medical devices are recalled all the time for various reasons don't know that I want to take that chance. Anyway...just wanted to stop by and say hi and let me know what you decide. Hi Jeffrey
I just wrote in your guest book today. I am the one from south florida who had mitral valve repair at Mt Sinai. I forgot to sign my name. It is Michelle Peterson.
Wow, thanks for writing and for this info. I am from NY originally too. How was your overall care at Mt. Sinai? I have heard good things about Dr. Adams too. I met with Dr. Stelzer to disusss the Ross operation since he's the man when it comes to that. They did suggest staying about an extra week after discharge. I will look into hotels and I also have an aunt and uncle I can stay with in NJ. I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks again for writing.

Hi Jeffrey
I am from south Florida (although born and raised in NYC). It will be one year march 10th since my mitral/tricuspid valve repair done at Mt Sinai by Dr. David Adams. All went great. I stayed 6 days in the hospital and it was recommended I stay at least an extra week at a local hotel (which i was given a list to pick from) when I came to meet dr Adams in January (in a snow storm btw) I went and checked out a couple of the suggestions and picked the closest, a small boutique hotel on Madison Ave. it was perfect. I was able to call with questions and feel safe just being right down the street from Mt Sinai if needed. Luckily I did great and was even out walking in central park a week after surgery (at a slow pace mind you). I had to see my surgeon one more time before I flew home. I was concerned about the flight home being in close quarters ( germs and all) but I did fine. I would definitely recommended staying an extra week. Also, set up your appt with your cardio doc back home you'll need to see them a week later and be in close contact during the few weeks after. I seems a little scary but the most important thing is that you have complete confidence in your surgeon and your getting the problem fixed. Good luck to you !
On February 4, 2012...
Hi Jeff. Glad the meeting went well. I am also deciding between the tissue or the mechanical valve. Had good discussion with my surgeon. Meeting with the cardiologist next week again. I think I am leaning toward the tissue valve. I understand that I will prob have it replaced again but the surgeon and cardiologist say when that times come it wil be done through a catheter.

Jeff, I was lucky to get a repair and not a replacement....but I had to decide in case once surgery started which would I want. I chose tissue if needed. Even with a repair, I have to be on coumadin 3 months and HATE it. Blood draws sometimes 3 times a week in beginning. I'm 5 weeks post op and levels still not right so weekly blood draws continue. Going to labs is very time consuming. I guess the question you have to ask yourself is....do you want to be on coumadin forever? Whatever you choose, you will be okay. Jeffrey Shebovsky Janis,
I DO NOT want to be on Coumadin for life so I have more or less ruled out mechanical. I have leaned toward Ross from the outset. I just wrestle with messing with my pulmonary valve. The outcomes are good though and this can last a very lomg time with the best hemodyamics. If I don't go Ross I will go with tissue. But at my age, I'd be looking at probably 3 tissues valves in my lifetime, maybe more! Thats a lot of OHS!

Hi Jeff,
Did dr. Stelzer give any recommendation as to which he thinks will be best? I gather from what you wrote that he only gave you only the pros and cons of each.
