I wanted to just reassure you that your decision to go with Dr. Castro and the Redwood City team is one you will not regret. In May, Dr. Castro performed my mitral valve repair and I could not be happier. He truly is an exceptional surgeon that treats his patients with respect. He is happy to answer all questions--no matter what they are. You will be on the road to recovery before you know it!

I used to live in NM so I know how beautiful mountain looks at sunset. Good luck to you in CA. When you see the mountain again, you will have a healthy heart.
You are super brave and as tough as they come, so I can't help but know you're going to have a great outcome from this. Your wonderful daughter is so excited to see you and take care of you. As you know probably better than I do - she can be a bit stubborn in her care taking, so for that, good luck!
I am so excited to see you soon! Wishing you a quick, full, and painless recovery! Lots and lots of love from Boston!

Hello Barbara.
I am what I like to call one of your Heart Sisters on this site. I have had heart Murmur and many years before getting to this place as well. I am 65 yrs. old.
Having a Bovine tissue valve as my replacement after doing research and thinking that at my age it will last long enough to experience many more years of gardening, kayaking & biking! If a replacement becomes necessary I am counting on one of the newer techniques!
I am glad you are going to attempt to journaling your experiences for your Family and Friends and sharing it with those of us out here.
This is my first time doing a journal that is on a shared site with so many people. I have found it to be helpful in gathering information and keeping focused on the important things.
I am going in on Aug. 20th. with a full sternotomy.
I hope you have the less invasive procedure. I have heard great things about the facility where you will be having your surgery and it is a good choice. Mine will be done in Santa Clara.
I see you have a great number of people wishing you well and who are sure that you will have a great recovery. You can add me to the list of those waiting to hear how you are doing. Best wishes.
Barbara Hoth Thanks I hope all goes well for both of us.

Hi Barb and Ron, Thanks for keeping me up to date on your upcoming surgery via your journal. You are in my thoughts and prayers as you prepare for and go through the tests and surgery. I understand your fear. You have done a good job of exploring the options before making a decision. You are in excellent general health. There is every reason to expect a successful outcome. I'm so happy you have such good support from Ron and Emily.
Did your new grandchild arrive earlier this month?
You are very special to me, Barb! It was a pleasure to have you as a student and even greater pleasure to have you as a friend. I remember your wonderful Irish setter. I still laugh when I remember him sitting outside until we had a class break and then he would come in for a visit until class started again. What a delight! I remember when you stayed at my home when I was out of town and while you were doing one of your clinical internships. I remember taking you and your belongings to the airport when you moved to Anchorage. And I remember wonderful times with you when I came to Anchorage to teach or to just visit. I love you, Barb, and look forward to more visits in the future.

Hi Barb, Have thought of you lots, even when on our ANWR adventure. The berries were still on the plants in many places (bear berries, cranberries.) The bear berries were breaking out in bloom, the leaves sometimes just barely in bud with that gorgeous red tinge. This brought to mind hunting for cranberries with you in the fall.
I am glad Ron took on the job of researching this surgery for you. Sounds like you will be well taken care of. I guess now we just hope for the partial sternotomy option.
Best wishes for total success and quick recovery. Good thing you're otherwise healthy and strong.
Love, Joyce

Barb! There were these two lady kayakers who passed through Unalaska last week--yes, KAYAKING the Aleutians--quite gracefully, yet full of respect for the weather and waters. One of them talked about fear; she said, "Fear can be a positive thing because it makes you careful, and it makes you smart. It protects you in the end." Your fear has made you be careful in your choices and will help you come out stronger in the end! Enkhee and I are thinking of you! I miss you! Best to you and Hugs,
