Hi Barbara! I just read on one of your posts that you have a five hour ride home. WOW! OK, here's a quick suggestion - make sure you have one of those u-shaped travel pillows to hold your head up. Our heads are VERY heavy, and you'll use a LOT of energy and strength holding it up. Why not get a travel pillow and let your neck and beck relax a bit?
Also, make sure you have several pillows that you can use to support your arms & shoulders. Seriously, you're going to be exhausted to begin with, and you'll doze in the car (I'm sure!) Make sure you have enough materials to support your upper extremities so you can relax and get a little rest.
Best of luck!
(It probably won't be as bad as you think it will)

Billy G Barbara, in addition to what Meredith said, you will want to stop and walk at least once an hour if you are going to be in a car for a while. I'm guessing the surgeon will tell you that.
I had a 4-5 hour drive back home after my surgery, which ended up taking 7 hours. I'm not sure my cases is representative of what most experience because I was in fairly good shape and seem to have had very few problems, but the ride back wasn't bad at all. I think just being excited to get home probably helped make it fairly easy. The worst part was when my dad drove through a very rough, bumpy, gravel parking lot to turn around when he missed a turn for a gas station.

Jan McClain Make sure they measure you for and give you a couple pairs of compression stockings, ask them about it in the hospital. I was glad to have mine for my 5+ hour plane trip home from Cleveland to SF. Ask your doctor/nurses how long they want you to wear them, very important to prevent pulmonary embolism

Dear Barb,
Great post!
Those of us who benefit from western medicine, even to the point of having our lives saved, still experience conflict within our intellect, our emotions, our faith, and our physical bodies.
It's so reasonable, don't you think?
How many times have I cried with gratitude over that first clean breath during an asthma attack yet have still cursed the side effects of the medicine that saved me? Every time. Fascinating. Human.
Very small example...so many running through my mind.
The bittersweet nature of life... the word human takes on meaning much bigger than I can express. It's hard and it gets harder when we start telling each other how we should be feeling. Hey everyone! Let's put up umbrellas for each other instead of denying the rain!
After your surgery, you will still have Ebstein's Anomoly but with a top-notch remodel courtesy of your surgeon. This is the right man, the right time...no coincidences.
I know you wrote that malformation is a better word to describe what's going on. I hope you don't mind if I continue to think, anomoly, since it means your heart is a rarity as are you. Tell your doc I said not to touch any of the love and generosity that you've got in there!
One more thing: I know you are, at times, worn and tired. Please try to remember how strong you are. Even marathon runners hit a wall. It's feared and it's predictable and it's beatable. You've been proving that your whole life.

Barbara Laurie Yes Nicola, you can have her, and my other sisters too.. If they were all close by you in London they'd have your situation completely squared away, your Mum taken care of and you safely working through your recovery!โค๏ธโค๏ธ They are that kind and efficient, AND they will make you laugh, since comedy comes naturally to most of them.
But, sadly, they are far away!!! But imagine you having 5 older sisters!! Hehe you're cute! {{hugs}} hang in there kiddo๐๐๐

Hey Barb! Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday... Wow, and then you, Jennifer, and I can celebrate another year on God's green earth.
I urge you to think ahead and browse products called Aloe Vesta by Convatec [You'll recall providing the #3 product for me! :) ]
Think of #1 for cleansing, #2 for moisturizing, and #3 for protecting your skin until you can shower. I use #1 and #3. Amazingly, the cleansing products, regardless of the form [spray or a creamy product] are designed to make rinsing optional.
There are lots of no-rinse shampoo caps on the market too.
You know me well enough to know that I go right to hygiene, but I bet there are plenty of people who could offer helpful suggestions to keep you as comfortable as possible while healing.
I love you, sister!

Barbara Laurie Thanks Cyn! You know me!! ๐๐๐๐Trying to write a good master list for shopping in town and online so we can prepare. Since we are away for a week also trying to find folks for shopping for just a few items and watching my plant. It's an air plant I've had for 4 years and it needs to be sprayed daily.. Can you imagine? I'm worried about my plant๐๐ Yet I am worried about my butt too, cuz, heck, I don't have a good range of mobility as it is, wondering all about that! Love you too!,

Just when I think I've heard it all. That being said, there is always a flower among the weeds. Someone there has to have an appropriate working knowledge of their system, a strong work ethic, human decency...Someone who doesn't just think of this as a JOB. Text your doctor. Either he is unaware of the dismal state of affairs at the clerical level (and above! ) or he's not. Either way, it will give you both (surgeon and you) a valuable opportunity to reassess plenty. This is madness and I'm so sorry you aren't receiving anything close to approaching the level of quality necessary when heart surgery is necessary. I love you, Barb!
Barbara Laurie The Sue: thank you my friend!! Thanks for following me and all your prayers๐น๐

Hi Barbara,
You asked about bras in your last post - I bought one from Heart & Core that was comfortable but pretty expensive ($70.00) I also purchased several front clasp bras at WalMart that were only $5.00 each. They had about 6 clips and that was not comfortable so I just cut off about 4 of them. Still held me together and not so much pressure on my chest. I normally wear a 34DDD and the WalMart bras only come in DD so I just got a larger size 38DD and that worked fine. Plus you are going to be swollen after surgery and do not want something too tight. I hope this information is helpful. Good luck on your surgery. I am 11 1/2 weeks post-op from mitral valve repair.
