Jeff H posted a note for Natalie that says: I had the exact same surgery (aortic valve repair and replace ascending aorta) about 3 weeks ago. My doc had a different philosophy regarding pain management. Basically, it was to manage the pain well which allows the body to heal faster. I did not stay on the meds for too long - a week and a half or so. I'm not a doctor, but I would encourage you to aggressively ask for more meds. It does not have to be as painful as Natalie's experience. I'm 52 and in pretty good shape, but I doubt the age difference would make that big a difference.
