Terrie. Thank you for your encouraging words. I DO look at this as another night, another fight, another guy to beat up on !! I'm extremely glad they can fix it and I'm ready when the time comes. I'm not afraid. Just a bit apprehensive. A Marine used to look at me and say, "ain't nothin' to it, but to do it". He was right. Nothing to think about except those decisions I do have control over. All well.

Once again your writing has moved me to tears. Your honest, transparent posts are one of the things I like most about this site. Even though I will celebrate my 2 year "birthday" on Jan. 25th the body is still healing, living and processing all that happens on that remarkable day. And I love that we have a place where we can share whether we are starting our journey, or well along the way.
Thank you for sharing your gift and your thoughts and taking us all on your journey. May God continue your healing and teach you all that He has to unfold for you.

I have been very concerned about the illness you and Gary have been suffering from. I don't want to interrupt your opportunities for rest and healing, but I will always be here for you. Hi Terrie!,
I always love your posts. So kind and so thoughtful. I haven't been on the site or even my computer for a while as life is just busy. I would up in the urgent care because I developed thrombophlebitis in my leg. Then my daughter went into labor 5 weeks early, and after being in and out of the hospital, delivered by emergency C-section our first grand child, a little boy. Mom and baby are both doing well and are now home and becoming a new family. Dad and mom are both tired as little Jacob has been feeding every two to three hours because he is so little and tires very quickly. We have been helping out as much as we can with the household things that just seem to keep pilling up.
I think about you often and pray that your recovery is progressing. I haven't heard if you have received the results of your monitor yet. I will keep it in my prayres that all will be well. I will try to get this posted to your guestbook. The last two that I have tried never posted.
Take care of yourself and don't push to hard to fast. Your complete healing will come.
Love and blessings to you all,
Robin

Hi Terrie,

Once again your post is spell binding and so very descriptive. I look forward to reading them. I was courious as to weather or not you have heard any information from your heart monitor test? Even though we have never met I feel a connection to you and other heart brothers and sisters.
I haven't written in a few weeks as I got a thrombophlebitis in my leg. Bad for me as I also have RSD, anemia, and a rash on my entire body that has gone on for 3 years. Then last week our daughter went into premature labor, and delivered our first grandchild, a boy, 5 weeks early by emergency C-section. God is so good and takes such good care of all of us. The baby is tiny, beautiful and healthy, our son-in-law and daughter are recovering and, well, life is full and busy.
And just like you and so many others I am still so grateful for those surgeons, doctors and nurses who gave me the chance to be alive to enjoy it all.
Thank for your wonderful posts. I pray that you get great news from your doctor.
Blessings,

Thank you, Terrie! yes we are so lucky to be living here....enjoying the everlasting beauty of the Central Coast. Even during the drought, it is majestic. There are very few green rolling hills, maybe none remain....but the great pacific ocean goes on for many miles along the coast, as we watch the surfers, and the people walking on the shore. The ocean has a life of its own and we are mesmerized by its vastness. I love being near the ocean.....it gives me life and feeds my soul. Yes, we're lucky to be here. I see that you live in Manteca...we lived in Tracy for 7 years, 2004 to 2011 , and then came back here. We missed it so much! We did not enjoy Tracy however we like to think of it that we were sent there because it helped me discover my heart problems. I was fixed in 2007, and now am faced with planning a second surgery. I found a wonderful surgeon via the Bicuspid Aortic Foundation. I will have my surgery in Santa Monica at St. John's Health Center. Dr. Raissi performed a multitude of valve replacements, and has saved many peoples' lives to whom I have access to and they can describe their experience with him. He recommends the Bovine valve. I'm 63...so he doesn't recommend a mechanical, and this news made me ecstatic. Although I am still afraid of the surgery, I am now looking forward to it. I noticed that you also have a Bovine. Did your doctor tell you the approximate life of the valve? Did he tell how much mileage you will get out of the valve?

Hi Terrie,
I am so happy to hear from you, I tried writing you a few times but for some reason I wasn't able to access your Guestbook or Journal
I am doing fine, am enrolled in cardio rehab class, just some fitness machines that one normally uses, and they take your b.p. several times, I go three times a week at 915am.
Due to the Ibola virus I am not traveling to Hungary to visit my severely ill sisterinlaw and have also suggested to my boys not to travel transatlantic either, my trip is around 14 hours, theirs would be considerably longer, one from L.A., other from Denver; I hope I am wrong about this plague festering and wish the nutty crowd in charge would stop all flights in and out of those African countries, even the other African countries have sense and intelligence enough to prohibit passage from Liberia and Sierra Leone (?)
I remember years ago when I had serious illness of pneumonia, my husband vacated our bedroom, had the children greet me at the doorway, in other words quarantine me in my room, it took months for me to recover.
Wonderful to hear you are recovering so well, I also found happiness in ability to resume carrying laundry up and down the stairs, folding, etc., and when weather is warm I adore hanging clothes out to dry on deck, nothing compares to the fresh air smell when drying outdoors
Yesterday when returning from my walk I heard a loud noise from an airplane, looked up to the sky and saw an old airplane flying with a loud rumble, then following the airplane was a triangle of smaller planes in set formation, two triangles of probably 36 airplanes, a neighbor suddenly appeared and we knew we were witnessing a special site in military history, later in the evening I heard on the news that WWII celebration to honor the military was being held in Washington,D.C., so the airplanes were vintage WW11 airplanes, what a fabulous site to behold and remember when the country respected our military, I am so old I remember when WW11 ended.
Now I need to repair my copy machine, for some reason is not printing.
Thank you for writing and hopefully I will be able to access your site, Best wishes to you, Gary, Hunter and Kat

Hi Terrie! Yes, I have the recliners in place! I actually ordered two, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. Supposedly, they are brand new out of the box, although I will still put a sheet over them...and they are black leather plush looking recliners - I saw them on the website. They look comfortable. I can rent them each week and stop at any time. I thought that was a pretty good deal. Thank you for asking.
I had my pre op tests today, they were uneventful but I will write in my journal what happened during the day just to get it out. Your story about your room...sounds like something my oldest would do! The only thing is I would not have punished her...although I know that generation and my parents generation generally were so strict! I can see why you did that. That head should not have been in a little girl's room. I think you did the right thing! :)
Wow you will be six weeks out next week, you are so lucky. Are you happy with your progress so far?

I look forward to seeing those trees when they are ready....thank you for sharing them with me. It would be fun to do with my girls, and it is different, which I like.

I am getting overwhelmed and feel like I am not keeping up with everything before I leave, but trying to do my best. Thank you so much for being so supportive, I really do have a new life on the other side of all this that I am working towards. It started slowly in the last year, figuring things out... but I have a lot more to accomplish and will be a busy single mom...so having this surgery will be good in the end, so when I am pushing myself I will no longer have to worry about my aneurysm....I am looking forward to seeing if there will be a difference in the way I feel after my bicuspid aortic valve is repaired. There has to be a difference...Thinking of you and I hope you are doing well.

Hi Terrie,
I am glad you posted as you did and let out how you feel. A lot of us on this heart journey are of the older class meaning the over 50 crowd. So here it goes, there used to be a saying that said "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Although I do find the need for progress and change (as that is how we all have received our new heart parts), sometimes some things just need a little update and not a complete makeover. I to am very glad I fell onto this site even though I was 5 months into recovery when I did. I was able to express how I felt and ask questions of those who had already done this. It was and is still difficult as I have not as of yet discovered anyone who had ever done this without pain drugs, and has issues with wounds that don't heal. It is awe inspiring to know that we can help each other around the globe and encourage each heart brother or heart sister no matter what the heart diagnoses may be and no matter where they are on in their part of the journey. I want to thank you for being one of my heart sisters and for your awesome posts. You truly have a gift for writing and for taking us along on your journey, and as personal as this is, I am blessed to have been set on a path that runs beside yours! Oh my dear heart sister Terrie. I couldn't agree more. When I came here in early July, it was after 2 days of sitting all alone in tears because here in my life I got nothing more than ridicule about how I was feeling when I returned from my cardiologist. I don't have a support system at home so when I found this site and joined, I was immediately supported by loving and caring people (brothers and sisters). I immediately started to feel better and the loneliness subsided a bit and this was a place I rushed to upon returning from work each day. But it's not feeling that way at this point in time. I do what I can to keep in touch via email with those who are willing to be in touch via email. If not for that, I would be right back to that feeling I had during those two days of tears. Because of the RSD that I have, the groin wound is still open. We keep an eye on it and keep it clean, and I am sure that in time it will heal.
I bet the fall colors are starting to come in where you live. It is amazing, but even here in the desert, where it is still over 100 outside, you can tell that fall is coming! Itoo am a heart sister. I had a very unexpected emergency aortic valve replacement 18 months ago. I was in surgery for 8 and 1/2 hours, 2 and 1/2 hours of that on life support. Because I have so many allergies I also had to take my journey with out pain meds. Not a path I would recommend, but I had an amazing team of doctors and nurses. Terrie, I want to thank you for your note. It actually made me cry, but in a good way. You understand, and that made me smile. Thank you for sending universal love and support our way. It has taken me close to a year to learn I have issues with receiving....and I happily accept your thoughts being sent my way. I also want to thank you for being proud of me. That means a lot. I will remember your post all the way to surgery. I loved hearing you have been married, second time around for 37 years! I hope to find (or he finds me)the right partner one day, if it is in the cards for me. A good husband is a gift, and worth waiting for. You both are so lucky to have found one another.

I am in pretty good physical shape, but than I read a post from a young man who was in really good shape and he was having a hard time with constant coughing, and I think a slight infection in his arm, and was experiencing a lot of anger. I just don't know what's coming my way. That is life, I suppose. I love the halloween trees...I have never seen one before. If you can, please post it, so I can see it. They sound interesting. Thank you again for taking the time to send me a note, and I wish you a very good, continued recovery. I am looking forward to being on the other side of this. Take care. Christine

Hi Terrie
I dislike Facebook and do not use it, too much invasion into our privacy, I know many of my posts went off to cyber space, and prefer the old system, all one had to do is look at the community and post to that person.
Also every time I post I have to do the puzzle thingie, why? put the ice cream in the cone? Anyway I treasure all the loving caring heart sisters and brothers and will not give up reaching out to them, you have been a tremendous help in boosting my spirit.
I know you will keep positive and focus on how well you are doing, we government employees (retired) have incredible insurance coverage , wish everyone had the choices we have.
take care dear Terrie , talk to you later
p.s. I just read a wonderful John Grishan book A PAINTED HOUSE

Dear Terrie
so sorry to hear of your recent setback, Thank God it was Saturday and Gary was with you to assist you
that radiology lady sounds like a real idiot, I recall having X-ray done first night in rehab hospital, 6th day post surgery, I didn't experience anything similar to your bad experience
I recall some accelerated heart beats lasting a short time and reported it to physicians while still at the hospital, they listened to my heart, did some tests said it was o.k., I assumed it was the new valve adjusting to the heart beat, etc.
sorry for the dark period, I think everyone, especially creative honest people such as you are have these periods, good that you talked to Ginger, our loving Heart Sister
best wishes and thinking kind thoughts of you, you will be fine I'm sure

Hi, Terrie, just checking on you. I imagine you moving around your house and garden, with Hunter underfoot, lining up things to do. Isn't being Home Alone liberating in a sense? For me, it was almost like playing house, or being in your first apartment as an adult. "Really, is it just me home alone? Do they think I'm ready? I must be an adult then!" Erica went to work part time in my week 2 or 3, probably 4 as it was early August and she was running summer dance camps from 12 to 4. My nephew works for the federal govt. and he's gone from 7.30 to 5. He took off to stay with me the first week, "to manage the animals" in his word, and Erica was with me full time also the first and second week, then by week 3 I was partially home alone, and actually enjoyed it. I could test out what I could do (or not), without someone saying "Be careful!" or "Let me do that". I know you are a strong and independent woman, Terrie, much like me so I can see you testing the boundaries of what you can do. Your body will be your guide as to what you cannot do, and will tell you when it is time to rest. I've never napped during the day, but I certainly have learned to sit down more than before. I go for cardiac rehab orientation next week, and I imagine after that the real thing will start. Looking forward to it and dreading it at the same time (I'm not a big exercise fan lately, other than swimming and walking), but I know I need it and will be there. I am glad you take your cell phone on your walks, I too have learned to keep my close by, even at night as I promised Erica when she moved back to her apt. that I would call her if anything strange happened, which nothing has. My philosophy is that if we are prepared, then nothing too wrong can happen. If there are benches in your park, test them out. If there are none, then don't walk too far, steady movement for 30 mins but you are not in a race my girl. I know Gary's work was glad to have him back, and while he was ready for being with his work buddies, I know he was concerned the first few days, and will have appreciated your having the cell phone close at hand. A bit too hot in northern Virginia today for a walk, I will wait until the sun goes down a bit then walk the dog a couple of laps around the cul de sac. They are coming to retrieve the rented recliner today, so sad, I have slept so well in that, even better than in bed since I was sleeping on my back, and not rolling over all night to avoid hip twinges. "Get over yourself" I tell myself, so I've been back in bed for a couple of night now. If I really miss it, I will have to buy one, but wouldn't that be silly to not be able to sleep in a bed anymore? Very troublesome when traveling I would imagine!" Best wishes to you, hope you are healing well. Life is good at 9 weeks after surgery, with driving, walking, cooking, shopping, catching up with friends, and pretty much doing whatever I wish (except for the swimming and cutting grass, too much use of chest muscles, not yet, but coming soon I hope). Just know that I am thinking of you, and am proud of your progress and how you chose to handle the whole heart valve surgery journey. You are an inspiration to many of us, as is Gary. Love to you. Terrie, My Dear Sister,
Just in case you have not heard it, I want to say to you how extremely proud I am of you and of all you have accomplished since you and I met in May. That may seem like a very short time, but there has been so much packed into it that it feels much longer. I have seen you grow in so many ways. You have made some very difficult decisions, most with your heart's best interest in mind. You have kept a number of different kinds of medical professionals from throwing you off track -- using tact and assertiveness to stay with your goals. The most extreme example I can think of is two different kinds of doctors who did not have expertise in the area of immediate need trying to take your time and divert you from seeing a professional who was, indeed, an expert in the area of concern. You phoned, called, wrote e-mails, but the main thing is that despite major efforts to the contrary you kept your focus on what was the next step in getting to heart valve surgery. Then when another professional set up a schedule for what she wanted to do for you (which would have paid her handily but put you at risk) you asked the definitive question. "If I follow your plan, when will this work be finished?" Astonishingly, although she knew you had surgery scheduled in the end of August, her time table would not have had you prepared until September 12!!! Say what??? I am proud that your ability to speak up for yourself and manage your own affairs when those who should have had your best interests at heart did not appear to became so noticeable that, on an office visit, one of the physicians in the mix came out and said, "Terrie, you have changed!"

And I am also proud of the way you spent so much time these past months following everyone on this website enough to pick up people in real trouble and get them the help they needed. You have been a tremendous source of positive energy and encouragement -- a huge change from where you were when I first met you on this site.

Now you need to use your energy to focus on recuperating yourself, and I think you are doing a great job of trying to care for yourself without overdoing it. Our bodies, and I am certainly echoing the voices of many others, tell us when to stop. We need to listen and follow them.

I am so proud of you, proud to be your Heart Sister, and am looking forward to a future that has you in it!

With great love,
Terrie Syvertsen  Ginger-Sister! I am honored by your extremely kind and special words from you to me in the above pos ... Read more

How great it is to know you have been home for two weeks, the staples are gone, and that sweet big guy Gary has taken so much of his time to pour out his love making sure you have the best experience and care possible, and in his spare time cleaned the house and kept all of us, your Heart Family, up to date. My sister is home and running circles around this kid, who wilts in the heat of the dog days of August in Oz.

Just know, woman, how very much you are loved! When we connected in May I knew right away it was something special. Looking forward to the Ice Cream Celebration once the vast majority, Olga included, are well into healing. And I know there will always be others coming along who need just as we did, and that we will be there for them as best we can.

Sleep with sweet dreams...I am asking God to send the Angels, and the Sandman, too!

Love always, Ging

Dear Terrie, I adored your email and want you to know I have sent several emails to you but they "disappear" maybe the computer analysts group is the Ocare same company from Canada where folks were not able to access the Ocare system!
I always loved to watch Snowflakes falling especially the first of the season, being from cold upstate NY we had snow for almost half a year; then living in D.C. , Virginia area we hardly get snow, so do miss it, I always associate the snowflake as a pure form of life and the millions of intricate patterns that only nature can design for us, like flowers which we all cherish
I am feeling better each day and waiting for my rehab heart classes to start, don't know why I haven't heard front the hospital
My sisterinlaw in Budapest is possibly dying from liver cancer, she is a retired Rhuematologist so realizes the dire condition she is in; does not want chemo, she has access to various doctors, she wants me to visit but I need more time to recover, I was there last October staying with her
We heart patients are indeed lucky and blessed by God for a simple/complicated fix in a sense, a new valve, a repaired valve, not some horrible disease or cancer attacking our body
I was happy to hear about your devoted lover Gary and also Hunter caring for their cherished Terrie , I was partly alone except for son #2 for 5 days, but always felt my darling husband's spirit guiding me and the wonderful loving notes from my heart sisters and brothers
hope this message gets thru
best

Then a note about Autumn taking more independent steps with her birthday coming up.

Gave a sign off. Put name on. Up came some stuff about dragging the correct plug into the outlet. For Pete's sake! Then a long wait and some computer gibberish, so came back to see if you got my note and find it is not here! Sorry!
