Education, Training & Certificates

Dr. Mubashir Mumtaz, heart surgeon, graduated from Aga Khan University Faculty of Health Sciences in 1994.

After medical school, Dr. Mumtaz completed a General Surgery Residency at the University of Connecticut in 2001. He also completed a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in 2003 and post-fellowship advanced training with Cleveland Clinic in 2004.

Dr. Mumtaz is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Through Dr. Mumtaz’s oversight, UPMC Central Pennsylvania has consistently achieved the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ highest three star ratings in multiple categories: coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) only, aortic valve replacement (AVR) only, combined (CABG/AVR) and mitral valve replacement (MVR). UPMC Central Pennsylvania has also been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as ‘best hospital’ high performing for aortic valve and heart bypass surgery.

Individually, Dr. Mumtaz has been recognized by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council in the 2016 Cardiac Surgery Report (most recent report available) as the top valve surgeon, based on volume, in the state of Pennsylvania while consistently achieving better than expected outcomes.
