"2 Months post op. I have a lot of health issues. I have been in a wheelchair 15 years with spinal injury so I am de-conditioned, have weight issues, diabetes, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatic heart. And no option to avoid surgery. Could have been a lot of complications. Dr Sciortino ordered extra pre op testing to prevent surprises. That extra scan testing found issues that could wait to be addressed post op but most probably would not have been discovered, without Dr Sciortino's diligence, until they created some severe complications some time in the future. Amazing experience. Dr Sciortino spent a tremendous amount of time educating me and my husband on the technical procedure, expectations, possible complications. All with a serious but light hearted attitude that gave me confidence that I was in the best care. He is a kind person that treats the patient with respect. All questions were answered, even those I didn't know how to voice. Post op he sat a long time with my husband, sisters and children and explained the findings and the technical parts of the surgery and the expectations of recovery. During the 3 days of intensive care, I was aware of his presence in the unit. He addressed any issues immediately and prevented long term problems. I spent another 3 or 4 days in step down care. All of the professional staff voiced their great respect for Dr Sciorotino and said he would be their personal choice of surgeon should they need heart surgery. My recovery is on par with young, healthy patients that are in good physical condition. I had done the research and I had chosen another, very well known surgeon with an excellent surgical history and had a date set for surgery. But I was just very uneasy about things and had questions that were not answered. Dr Sciortino was to be my second opinion. I am so glad my sister insisted on a second opinion. There was an immediate click that happened when I met with Dr Sciortino. Needless to say, I am very pleased that I cancelled the scheduled surgery with the other surgeon. I owe my life and future good health to Dr Sciortino. "

"This was to be a routine, second surgical opinion for a surgery that was already scheduled with another surgeon at another hospital. I had thought I was well prepared and informed. Dr Sciortino spent a considerable amount of time explaining this procedure. The pros and the cons. I felt an immediate trust in his ability to take good care of me. I did not know that I actually had very little information about the procedure I was about to undergo on my heart until he discussed it with me. He was present often following the surgery and attended to all of my needs and questions. I have had a lot of physical issues and limitations with chronic illnesses. He made sure, by ordering extra and special pre-op testing, based on that appointment, that there would be no surprise issues during surgery. Those test revealed issues not previously known that could have presented some serious problems in my future that can now be addressed. I am very grateful that I went for a second opinion."
