{"id":685,"date":"2021-01-20T20:04:21","date_gmt":"2021-01-20T20:04:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/learning\/?page_id=685"},"modified":"2023-09-27T13:06:04","modified_gmt":"2023-09-27T13:06:04","slug":"covid-vaccine-phase-1c","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/learning\/covid-vaccine-phase-1c\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Heart Valve Patients in &#8220;Phase 1c&#8221; for COVID-19 Vaccination?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since posting our &#8220;Doctor Q&amp;A&#8221; about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/learning\/covid-19-vaccine\/\">safety of COVID-19 vaccines for heart valve surgery patients<\/a>, we received several important questions about whether-or-not heart valve patients are in &#8220;Phase 1c&#8221; of the COVID-19 vaccination roll-out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-695 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/learning\/..\/Images\/covid-vaccine-heart-valve-phase-1c.jpg\" alt=\"Heart Valve Patients - Phase 1c COVID Vaccine\" width=\"600\" height=\"314\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As you may already know&#8230; The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made the following recommendations for vaccine allocation distribution (although the specific timeline for each phase will vary upon each states eligibility guidelines and community needs):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Phase 1a &#8211; Healthcare workers and long-term care facility residents<\/li>\n<li>Phase 1b &#8211; Frontline essential workers and people over the age of 75<\/li>\n<li>Phase 1c &#8211; People ages 65-74 and people ages 16-64 with high risk medical conditions<\/li>\n<li>Phase 2 &#8211; People 16 years and older<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-687 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/learning\/..\/Images\/cdc-vaccine-guidlines-phase-1c-heart-valve.jpg\" alt=\"CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Allocation Phases\" width=\"500\" height=\"549\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As I reviewed the CDC recommendations and other materials across the web, I looked to see if heart valve disease qualified as a a specific &#8220;high-risk&#8221; condition for Phase 1c.\u00a0 If so, heart valve patients would be considered high risk and therefore be considered part of Phase 1c.\u00a0 Unfortunately, I struggled to find a specific high risk definition that included or excluded heart valve disease specific to Phase 1c.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What Do Experts Think About COVID-19 Vaccination &#8220;Phase 1c&#8221; for Heart Valve Patients?<\/h2>\n<p>To learn more, I contacted several heart valve experts to see what they thought&#8230; Are pre- and post-operative heart valve patients considered part of the &#8220;Phase 1c&#8221; guidelines for COVID-19 immunization.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/profileImages\/306_129_173.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Marc Gerdisch\" width=\"129\" height=\"173\" \/>Dr. Marc Gerdisch<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In response to this important question, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/surgeons\/dr-Marc-Gerdisch-Indianapolis-Indiana.php\">Dr. Marc Gerdisch<\/a>, Chief of Cardiac Surgery at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/hospital\/franciscan-health\">Franciscan Health<\/a> in Indianapolis, Indiana, stated, &#8220;It&#8217;s hard to make a blanket statement about risk for people with a history of valve disease. But, I would say that, in general, heart valve patients are at increased risk and would often fall into the category of Phase 1c (less than 65 years old but with increased risk). COVID-19 is associated with a prothrombotic state that could have real consequence for anyone with a prosthetic valve, either mechanical or bioprosthetic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/profileImages\/304_129_188.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Joanna Chikwe\" width=\"129\" height=\"188\" \/>Dr. Joanna Chikwe<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/surgeons\/dr-Joanna-Chikwe-Los+Angeles-California.php\">Dr. Joanna Chikwe<\/a>, Chair of Cardiac Surgery at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/hospital\/cedars-sinai-heart-institute\">Cedars-Sinai Medical Center<\/a> in Los Angeles, California, shared with me, &#8220;Pre-op and some post-op cardiac surgery patients could be considered part of phase 1c.\u00a0 Patients aged 65-75 years are included in phase 1c (patients &gt;75 were included in phase 1b).\u00a0 As of January 19, 2021, the CDC also includes patients aged 16-65 years with \u201cmedical conditions that increase the risk for severe COVID-19\u201d as provided for in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/hcp\/acip-recs\/vacc-specific\/covid-19\/evidence-table-phase-1b-1c.html\">&#8220;Evidence Table for COVID-19 Vaccines Allocation in Phases 1b and 1c of the Vaccination Program&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chikwe then addressed the cardiac conditions that are at increased risk for COVID-19.
