{"id":644,"date":"2021-01-01T15:02:01","date_gmt":"2021-01-01T15:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/learning\/?page_id=644"},"modified":"2023-09-27T13:25:25","modified_gmt":"2023-09-27T13:25:25","slug":"covid-19-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/learning\/covid-19-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Vaccines &#038; Heart Valve Surgery: 10+ Important Facts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the new COVID-19 vaccines made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine\">Pfizer-BioNTech<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/moderna-covid-19-vaccine\">Moderna<\/a> are now FDA-approved under the emergency use authorization, my inbox is filling up with important questions from patients who have previously undergone heart valve replacement procedures, heart valve repair operations and corrective therapy for other cardiac related diseases including aortic aneurysms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-669 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/learning\/..\/Images\/covid-19-vaccine-heart-valve-surgery.jpg\" alt=\"COVID-19 Vaccines &amp; Heart Surgery Stitches\" width=\"600\" height=\"314\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are examples of patient questions I received about COVID-19 vaccines specific to heart valve surgery and aortic aneurysms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jean emailed me, \u201cHello Adam, I had an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/aortic-valve-replacement-surgery.php\">aortic valve replacement<\/a> and aortic graft performed three years ago. I am a 55-year old in good health with no other underlying health conditions.\u00a0 The surgery was done to replace a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/bicuspid-aortic-valve-symptoms.php\">bicuspid valve<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/aortic-aneurysm.php\">aortic aneurysm<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0I have not contracted COVID-19 but I am wondering about the safety of the vaccine as it relates to the heart valve replacement and Dacron graft.\u00a0 Are you aware of any complications or side effects for heart valve patients to receive a vaccine because of the bioprosthetic valve and\/or graft?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Dr. Nestor asked me, &#8220;Dear Adam, I have a biological aortic valve replacement.\u00a0 Do you know if there are any worries or side effects for heart valve patients with the Pfizer immunization for COVID-19? I am about to receive the vaccine and be immunized?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Liz asked me, &#8220;Can you comment yet about the COVID-19 vaccine related to those of us with a biological valve. I have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/cow-valve-replacement.php\">aortic cow valve replacement<\/a> and two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/2009\/12\/15\/annuloplasty-rings\/\">annuloplasty repair rings<\/a> on my other valves.\u00a0 Would you please gather information and comment? Thanks!&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Heart Valve Experts Comment on COVID-19 Vaccines<\/h2>\n<p>To educate our community about COVID-19 vaccines, I reached out to three leading cardiac surgeons who specialize in valvular therapy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/profileImages\/195_129_152.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Patrick McCarthy\" width=\"129\" height=\"152\" \/>Dr. Patrick McCarthy<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/surgeons\/dr-Patrick-McCarthy-Chicago-Illinois.php\">Dr. Patrick McCarthy<\/a>, the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/hospital\/northwestern-memorial-valve-program\">Northwestern Medicine<\/a>, explained to us, &#8220;There are no known complications from the vaccine that would impact the valve and\/or the graft. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines currently being distributed have incredibly high effectiveness (95% effective), and safety profiles. Currently, with over 2 million people in the US vaccinated, the media are playing up one physician who apparently had an allergic reaction that was easily treated. That\u2019s a very safe vaccine, and much safer than the myriad serious complications that can occur in heart patients who contract Covid-19. There are temporary side effects from the vaccine, such as local tenderness, fatigue, headache, and occasionally a low grade fever. But these are manifestations that the vaccine is working and the body is revving up our immune system. There are other nonsense stories circulating on the internet, such as that the vaccine includes a microchip tracker. It\u2019s hard to tell how such ludicrous stories begin, but likely it relates to the tracking and temperature sensor that accompanies each case of vaccine. We don\u2019t want to lose any vaccine during shipping, and they have to be kept cold. Widespread vaccination of nearly all of us is the bright light at the end of this dark tunnel. I\u2019ve had my first shot and will gladly receive my second shot soon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/profileImages\/167_129_172.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Marc Gillinov\" width=\"129\" height=\"172\" \/>Dr. Marc Gillinov<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/surgeons\/dr-Marc-Gillinov-Cleveland-Ohio.php\">Dr. Marc Gillinov<\/a>, the Chair of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/hospital\/cleveland-clinic-microsite\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>, shared with us, &#8220;Based upon what we know now, all those who are eligible should get the vaccine.\u00a0 There is currently no evidence of any issues or harm caused by the vaccine(s) in those who have had previous cardiac surgery\/procedures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/profileImages\/304_129_188.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Joanna Chikwe\" width=\"129\" height=\"188\" \/>Dr. Joanna Chikwe<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/surgeons\/dr-Joanna-Chikwe-Los+Angeles-California.php\">Dr. Joanna Chikwe<\/a>, the Chair of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/hospital\/cleveland-clinic-microsite\">Cedars-Sinai Medical Center<\/a>, shared with me, &#8220;Current best evidence strongly suggests the benefits of getting vaccinated outweigh the risks, especially for patients with a history of heart disease. If you have concerns it is definitely worth discussing them with your primary care or cardiology team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>January 4, 2021 Update: What About COVID-19 Vaccine Use For Patients Who Have Mechanical Heart Valves Or Underwent The MAZE Procedure (for Atrial Fibrillation), Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts (CABG) and\/or Got Cardiac Stents?<\/h2>\n<p>Shortly after posting this article, we received several questions from patients about other cardiac devices and cardiac procedures.\u00a0 For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tammie at our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/heartvalvesurgery\/\">Facebook page<\/a> asked me, &#8220;Would this also include those of us with a mechanical aortic valve? I keep hearing about the tissue valves but not mechanical.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Shirley posted, &#8220;I have had two stents put in. I was going to get the vaccine and now am wondering if I should?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Mary asked, &#8220;I had an ablation done for my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/atrial-fibrillation\/\">atrial fibrillation<\/a> in July 2020.
