Hi, Ginger. I am very happy about the outcome of your heart cath. For me, that meant a minimal incision which supposedly means a shorter healing time. I am on day 16 post surgery and am doing fine, but still sleeping in the recliner, cocooned in soft sheets and able to electrically find the best position. I've tried my bed a couple of times, but it puts pressure on my chest, so back to the recliner I go. I have been released by the surgeon and will see the cardiologist in mid August, for cardiac rehab. I wish you the easiest possible time with your surgery and the speediest recovery.

Hello my countup sister! Sorry I did not write this week. My assistant director was on vacation this week. I worked from 700 to 600 pm all week. I was wore out!! Wanted to get her vacation in before I begin mine(lol). Last night I slept like a baby. Did not get out of bed until almost 1000 a.m. I have been gettingnup every day around 545 am for the past week.

I feel much more comfortable about my procedure on the 29th. I called my surgeons office and got all my questions answered. Its my understanding that on the 28th I will have a chest xray, physical, EKG, bloodwork, meet with anesthesiologists, doctors, etc. Then go home and return early
on the 29th. As of right now my time of surgery is 800a.m.

You are having a heart catherization Also the same day (correct)?

Its so hard to believe we are both on the countup day 19.

Before you know it we both will be back at our homes enjoying ice cream, relaxation and of course connecting with our heart family!

Once we have this all behind us it would be awesome to have a heart family get together! Somewhere warm, relaxing!

Thank you Ginger for reminding me to have faith in Our Heavenly Father. You really helped me to get back on track. Also thank you for making sure I was not missing in action. Your friendship means so much to me, my heart sister.

I actually made sure to have my will in place. I am so blessed (one of my clients at my preschool is an attorney.) She approached me one day and asked me if everything is in order? I thought she meant at the center. She meant my will and wishes concerning medical. She is taking care of everything free of charge. What a blessing. Of course I do not plan on needing it for a long time.

Its a beautiful day here in the Great Lake State. Setting on your deck writing to you and hearing the birds chirp. The temperature is 75!

I am planning on working on some picture collages for my childcare/center when I come home with my heart repair or new tissue mitral valve.

Looking forward to connecting with you daily now that we approach the big week!

Butterfly kisses, Eskimo hugs and loads of love to you my sister!

Hi Ginger,
I am seven weeks post op from having open heart surgery to repair my mitral valve and a hole in the atrium wall. I think it was great all the small stuff you managed to collect that people forget about but it sure adds up to alot when you think about it.

I saw your question regarding the sternum healing. I really had hardly any pain when breathing in and out after surgery. Though the sternum did ache somewhat and it was more my back that was sore. Mind you I think being large chested makes it a little more difficult. Very strong brassier is the key even when sleeping.

I did notice that if I over extended my arms (which they tell you to avoid) that some clicking /rubbing of the breast bone began. I clued in pretty quick to stop doing whatever made that rubbing sensation and laid low for a little while. That means you need to ask for help from your family to reach for things, unload the dishwasher and even make dinner. The good news is that the rubbing has really slowed down and is almost gone even though I am beginning to use my arms a little more.

I wish you lots of luck on your surgery. :)

Thank you Ginger, your kind words and prayers. the culture came back negative, but they want me to continue the Cirpo, since it was only 6 pills. They had me stop the heart rhythm pill (Amiodorone) while taking the Cipro, so today I finish the one and restart the other. They also prescribe a nasal ointment (Bacrtrine or something like that), to use after the respective showers with the special soap the night before and morning of). One has to take notes, especially when stopping one thing, starting another, cutting the statin in half while on the Amio. Wow, how do people keep up with this. So, surgery is still a go, with a later start time, check in a 9 instead of 5, better for my family for sure.

Like Tony, I had the plug, two hours flat but no other precaution or anything, plug supposedly self dissolves. That night, I removed the band aid in the shower, and honestly I could hardly see the incision, and not at all by the next morning, even though I followed the instructions of going up and down stairs more carefully. I just remember it was quick and painless. Hoping all the best for you, too.

I've had 2 experiences with heart caths in the past 18 months. The first one was horrible - nobody ever told me I had to flush the dye out of my system so I "held it" for 8 hours because I've never used a bedpan before. When they told me I could get up and go home, I was ok until I came out of the bathroom, then BOOM nearly hit the floor, and my BP went to 50/30. My husband said they brought the crash cart in! I didn't go all the way out, but it scared the crap out of me.
My second one was much better - I told the nurses upfront what happened the first time, and that I (1) had never used a bedpan and (2) am very shy about bathroom activities in front of other people. They took that into account, and gave me very thorough instructions, as well as plenty of privacy. It was a much better experience.

The first one I was awake for. The second one I think I was out - I don't remember. I know I woke up when they put the dye in, because I started talking and was promptly "SHUSHED!"

The moral of the story is, make sure you get a lot of fluids in your body, and make sure you get rid of the fluids in your body!

The first one I had a lot of soreness and bruising. The second one was a smaller but darker bruise. Both were in the groin area.

I took my tablet, but mostly I just fell asleep with the TV on.
