Fantastic news Tom! I'm glad you are done with the wound vac and on the last leg of your healing! Are you doing the dressings yourself now? How much is left to heal and how long did they think it would take? I'm so glad you don't have to carry that pump around anymore! Have fun scaring all those innocent children, and Happy Birthday to your daughter, isn't it great to be able to celebrate with her and feel so good?
Interesting about the rehab and the Airdyne...I had the same thing happen to me, there must be something about using both the arms and legs! Sounds like you're not the only one that had that experience.
Not so good news for me, on Wednesday, I started having increased drainage and color change from my incision again, ran a low grade temp, and had right sided pain. I knew immediately that there was something wrong. It seems another area has tunneled to the surface. Back on antibiotics for 10 days, changing the way I dress it, and am going with wet-to-dry again for the 2nd time. My poor Dr. is almost as frustrated as I am. He called my surgeon at Mayo Clinic Friday, and they still think it's a suture reaction, and "it just takes time". Easy for them to say. He said they would be glad to see me again, although it didn't sound like there was anything different they would do. They do want me to send pictures, so I'm glad I was taking them on a weekly basis! Haven't decided yet whether to go back to Mayo.... it's such a long drive and takes more time out of my vacation pay!!
I'm so happy for you! Enjoy the weekend!

Hey Thomas,

So glad to hear you are done with the wound vac......that has to feel so good! Won't be long before you are back in the pool. Kind of a hot summer to be missing out on that though.

I had the same experience on the Airdyne at rehab......they kept telling me to back off because my heart would always jump around skipping beats and throwing extra ones and it would get too high. It never bothered me though.....it actually felt good.

Happy Birthday to your daughter.......enjoy her special day!

Hi Tom, that's great that you are down to 0.5 cm on the depth, that is barely enough to get foam in anymore, hopefully they will switch you off the wound vac very soon! Is there still any drainage in the cannister? that might be the key.... Actually, if you think back to when they started the wound vac, around the 5th of July? the depth was 2.5 cm, and July isn't over yet, so you are healing at a pretty fast clip!! I know not as fast as you wanted, but it averages to over 0.5 cm a week, doesn't it? So the end is in sight for you!!! Have a great week. BTW, good pictures!! Praying for healing, patience, and Denise!

Hi Tom, glad to hear you are enjoying cardiac rehab, wow! look at you go! It's good that the wound vac isn't interfering with your exercise. You should post a picture of the wound vac, if you can do it discreetly.... at least the pump itself, so others can see what kind of back-pack you are carrying around!! Have they said what the plan is for dressings after they take off the wound vac for good? Are you still getting the dressings changed three times a week? It's easy to get frustrated with this monotonous procedure and SLOW healing wound.....I have had my days of frustration! Interesting what Denise said about the fellows doing the closing. It makes me think I should call my surgeon's office and let him know how long my incision has taken to heal. I did call them initially so they know about it, but told me to go to my local PCP and surgeon, which is what I've been doing. They don't know how long it's taken to heal though, and that many of my sutures "surfaced" weeks later! I'm still packing the incision with 1/4" iodoform gauze......time seems to stand still as far as progress! okay, enough whining, glad to hear things are getting better for you! Keep on healing!!

Hey there-
I'm behind on my updates also. Sorry to hear your wound vac is still with you, but glad you are taking care of things.

I'm at cardiac rehab, but now only 2 days/wk as that is the latest class, 4pm and Im now back to work.

Your incision looks small, is that a tv remote? My sternal incision is probably 5-6" but everyone tells me you can barely see it...

As far as the cardiac rehab I do 15 mins treadmill, start flat at maybe 3.0 then incline to 3.5 and 3.5 speed. I've started trying to jog at 3.8 for a couple of minutes. Bike I do 15, but split between level 1 and 2. 6 wow!

Glad to hear an update from you.

Yes, it is, but the consent forms all patients sign when you are admitted tells you that it is a fellowship hospital and you are basically consenting to them doing some of the procedures. It is always that way at a fellowship hospital. The fellows are MD's learning to be surgeons is my understanding of it. Hi Tom, Yes I read somewhere about the seroma becoming incapsulated. I sure hope I don't have to go the surgery route. And yes we both had fellows doing the opening and closing for our surgeries.

A fellow also did my heart cath, and I was under the impression Dr. Hobbs was supposed to do it, as the fellow came to see me before and said he would be assisting Dr. Hobbs during my procedure. Anyway, I was still awake as they were starting it and Dr. Hobbs was observing, the fellow was doing the procedure and I ended up with the pseudo-aneurysm (happpens 1 - 2% of the time) and earned 2 nights in the hospital over that whole ordeal. I never said anything, but I still wonder if Dr. Hobbs had actually done the cath that it may have been fine.

When I met with Dr. Roselli the day I was released from that ordeal I made sure to ask if his hands were going to be the ones doing my mitral valve repair and not a fellow and he said the fellows open and close and he does the actual repair.

I did read Trent's post about the placement of the incision for the heart-lung bypass and wonder about that too. I am anxious to see what the vascular surgeon has to say on Friday. I will let you know.

It is good to be back to work 4 hours a day is definitely enough until I get this seroma issue resolved.

It sounds like you are doing better each day - glad to hear that. Take care.

Hi Tom,
Glad to hear you are finally starting heal up your groin wound.....yikes.....that has been a long time!
Isn't cardiac rehab great??? I just loved it. Felt so good to be moving again, and it was nice to be monitored the whole time. Like you, my blood pressure was typically 90/50 at rehab. They didn't seem to worried about it so long as I was feeling good. I take my blood pressure almost every day, and it is usually in that range. Kind of depends on what my heart rate is though. If my heart rate is a more normal 60 or 70, my blood pressure seems to be a little higher (110/60), but when my heart rate is slow.....like in the 30's or 40's....my blood pressure is always low. I will be interested to see where yours tends to hang.
My whacky heart rate has been better for the last three weeks, and I have no idea why, but I am really grateful. It has been incredibly hot here, and I thought that might make it worse, but it hasn't. Guess it just beats to it's own rhythm. I'm hoping it keeps it up:)
Good luck at rehab and keep on healing'!

Tom, I'm sorry to hear that things are going so slowly for you. Just think how long it would take without the wound vac! Ouchy on the skin getting pulled into the suction tubing, that dressing change was NOT done correctly.... I hope you didn't have to wait 2 days to get that one fixed! I'm glad the drainage has slowed down, as far as the odor, it might just be from your skin and the dressing over the wound, and not getting much air to that area! The incision itself shouldn't have any odor if it's not infected. Is the inside of the incision nice and pink/red looking? Lots of blood flow to that area that you can see? You don't want it to look yellow :( I just know from experience that even though wound vacs heal so much quicker, it still takes time for the entire area to heal completely. No swimming or pool time this summer for me either! Are you going to be able to start rehab on Monday?
One thing that I am doing, is to take a picture of the incision every week, and even though I don't think it's changing or getting better, if I look back at the pictures, I can see how far it's come! Sometimes time stands still when we want something to happen sooner rather than later!!
As always, thinking of you and praying for healing. BTW, if we ever make it to Texas, I'll look you up!
Take care

Hi again! Hopefully you have those darn alarms under control. Did they give you any extra dressings so that you can patch up the leaks when they alarm? Sometimes the foam gets pulled into the tubing and causes a blockage too, and in that case you have to totally re-do the dressing! If you're not having much drainage in the canister, then I think the intermittent should be fine, but if you are filling the canister, then continuous might be better. Actually, you are right about the healing taking longer, I don't want to be a downer, but you have a right to know that it will take quite a while to heal from the inside out.... It's going on several months for me and I still haven't been able to post that "all healed up" message yet. The wet to dry dressing changes will take a while to heal... are you going to be able to do it yourself or is the nurse going to do it for you? I'm probably getting ahead of things.
Again... be careful to keep that area clean and keep infection out. My incision "re-seeded" itself and 2 weeks ago I ran a low-grade fever for 5 days, blood cultures were negative but my incision culture came back positive for the same bug... Staph Aureus, back on antibiotics and feel so much better. By now the dressing changes are old hat and part of my routine!!! I hardly know it's there! It is what it is!!!! Hang in there!!!

Hi Tom, hope it went well today and you aren't too sore. The wound vac should do the job for you, although it can be uncomfortable at times and you have to be sure it stays sealed, or the "leak" alarm will drive you crazy. As a nurse, I have worked with them before, we call it "cutting and pasting" the dressing to fit the wound so it won't leak! I know it's frustrating, but so glad there is a way to fix it, aren't you? I use iodoform to pack my incision, and each week it get's less and less. HI Tom, hope this is the final challenge you have related to your valve repair. CC did my initial repair, it never worked and had to be redone within 6 months of the first, this time I stayed local for the repair. Second repair was successful, now I'm dealing with paralysis of the diaphragm, one of many complications I was not aware. I no longer believe in the simple mitral valve repair, "get it done early and then get on with one's life". Don't think I ever ran into anyone who did have some type of complication. barb
