Hi Terrie
I also asked the surgeon how will you know if I am completely knocked out, recall horror stories years back about patients being awake during surgery, he assured me that the anesthetics they now use have a built in warning, forgot what its called, to alert them, but he assured me it now longer happens
last thing I remember is being wheeled into a huge surgical room which reminded me of "outer space" which I remarked on, hours later awoke in recovery and fortunately they had removed the breathing tube while I was out, you may want to ask about that, others experienced horror stories about being awake while they removed it, fortunately all went well.
God Bless and we are thinking and praying for you to have a safe surgery and good recovery.

It is 10am east coast time, so that means you will already be headed to your pre-op appointment. I hope all goes well with that, and that you like the folks you will meet. I did not meet the anesthesiologist, and equally important the anesthesiology nurse, until the morning of my surgery. They did a great job, for I don't even remember the move from the "holding pen" room I was prepped in, down the hall (I guess) to the OR. I was out like a light until I awoke in the recovery or ICU, and gave a thumbs up sign to family, even with the breathing tube in. That, too, was not a big deal I barely remember the nurse saying "You are awake now, all went well. Let's get the tube out, on the counts of 1, 2 you and I are going to do this, just relax" I must have drifted back to sleep for I do not remember it coming out. Not sorry for that lost memory. Hope you like everyone, they will love you I know. Best wishes to you.

Terrie,
Had to see the great pics -- and great they are of you and Gary, Hunter, Lorenzo, and a WOW Moon! Thanks for saving it for the rest of us to see.
I have to tell you how very, very proud I am of you in so many ways. You have had more than your fair share of challenges, but you have learned to meet them head on with tact (when possible) or bluntness (when necessary). Your wise decision making and the work you have done to communicate with your many members of your health care team are admirable, and have put you in a sound position that not many who started with your load would have been able to achieve. Through it all, you have a better idea of who you are and what you are now capable of, and I pray that stays with you the rest of your long and happy life!
How proud am I to call you my Sister? I am honored and extremely proud! We have been traversing this journey together for the most part, and I will be with you all the way in spirit and in prayer the entire week and days to come. Remember that you are dearly loved and fervently prayed for. Take the gift of His peace and float (or kayak) through still waters to health and happiness.
I hope you know how very special you are to me. I love you with my whole heart (even the valve that has only been with me for two weeks but is here to stay!) Take every opportunity to rest and go with the flow. You have come through so much and it is time to enjoy the fruit of your labors, knowing that so many of us are surrounding and enveloping you in prayer...all the way through....With the greatest admiration and love and faith I am with you for every step and heartbeat.

Terrie Syvertsen Dear Ginger, Has anyone told you lately how eloquently you write? Let me tell you how much your words and feelings expressed tonight have touched my "Heart". If every there were words I needed to hear just before going to bed, they were these.
You mean a great deal to me and been the one from the beginning who welcomed me on and into this community. You made it easy for me to open up and ask questions that led to answers from many people I have gotten to know/or getting and helped me find a Family to be a part of. It is good to belong. To be heard. To be respected for who I am. Being able to speak out and up when I need to and know that no one hear judges the other if they are frustrated or afraid. I have never met a more compassionate group of people than here in our "village". I am proud to call you Sister as well and look forward to many years of a growing friendship. I am looking forward to a great healthy recovery with you and our Family.
Thank you for the post tonight as I will take all the wonderful thoughts and prayers that came to me from our community and go to my pre-op with confidence! I love you Ginger. Night!
Love you, Terrie

I just want to check in & wish you the best tomorrow at pre-opt & next week's surgery. I know how the schedule change can be unsettling, but I am sure you will do fine. I like to feel control in my life, but before surgery, I told myself I have to let go, trusting the surgeon, the nurses, the hospital, and accepting what life has for me. Don't worry; you will have to be in charge 2 days after the surgery because you are in control of your recovery. Hope you will find peace in the next week.

Terrie Syvertsen Meredith! Three Boys? For God's sake we are going to either have to have an Imaginary Friend Reunion or start their own Support Group!!!!!!! You know I hadn't thought about Mary since my childhood and for some unimaginable(pun intended)reason, probably the Super Moon we all experienced she just found her way back into my heart.
She helped me make my way in my earliest years and perhaps She has shown up to help me through this experience! Let us just hope she doesn't find her way with my vocal chords or I might be the first person kicked out of ICU for belting out some show tune(Mary and I always loved to sing together!) I hope my nurses have a great sense of humor as I feel whatever happens I will possibly be a handful although my intent is to be a model patient!
Meredith, I appreciate the time you took to answer questions up until now and if I think of any after the meet with pre-op tomorrow I will give you a quick guestbook visit over the weekend and hope to catch you! You people are a grand lot! So many of you have given me so much support and comfort in the time leading up to this week. It was far different before and let this be a lesson to all the newbies out there in the community. Ask and you shall receive. Many people here on site that understand every aspect of what you are going through so ask questions and be confident the people in our community will respond with open hearts! Take care and I will be in touch ! I am sure I will have questions during recovery and I especially will need your particular sense of humor to get me through! Later! Love, Terrie

Terrie Syvertsen Poof! There you are again Mia! Very sweet of you! Gary got a tablet thingy which he says is for me as it will drive me nuts not to let y'all know I am ok. But I realize from all of you "that have gone before" that this will not be as simple as it sounds to do, tablet or not.
And since I will be on different drugs I can not promise that the tomboy, ex-warehouse worker in me who learned various foul words from the 35 men I worked with might have a tad of a chance of rolling out onto the keyboard in a moment of Pain, perhaps. (Not that I swear on a regular basis but do have to admit that on occasion one or two of them have stuck in the brain and could escape my lips which would embarrass me to death!
Anyway, thank you for all the Kisses, chirps but put a hold on those dragon fly licks as that kind of just groused me out! LOL! Thank you for the love from your new heart. Have a great day!

Hi, Terrie, thinking of you today, and imaging you imaging yourself tracking down the surgeon and saying "Let's get this show on the road, I am more than ready!" Actually, that was me a month ago, saying "Can we please do this already!" Try to enjoy your week, I know you've got your bag packed and ready to go (wasn't that a folk song by the way??). Practice your sitting down and getting up from different chairs without using your arms, hope you don't have stairs in your house, mine is 3 stories so I had to learn how to face the handrail, put both hands on the rail and go up or down one step at a time. At least for weeks 1 and part of 2. Now I just go up with no hands, no stopping, no worries. I am cooking again, can wash the dishes (still not great on loading the dishwasher, as stooping over isn't the greatest yet), I am so tempted to vacuum and cut the grass, but know better than that, so I enjoy the early morning sun on my deck and evening shade on the patio, watching Lucy the dog run around or chase the cat sitting like a Buddha under a crepe myrtle. Life is good! Hoping the very best for you tomorrow and on the 20th.

I'm ready to go, Standing here outside your door, I hate to wake you up and say goodbye. But the dawn is breaking its early morn, the taxi's waiting he's blowing his horn---------well you know how it goes. Yes dear it was Peter Paul and Mary folk song! Cute! I used to play that on my guitar along with Puff the Magic Dragon!

Get that--------breathing tube the hell out of me!!!!!!! Sorry we seem to have a theme that touched a nerve, ha ha ha.
I am a product of the 60's Too! Played Joan Baez, Dylan, Pete Seeger(yes I was a 16yr. old runaway with a guitar on her back looking to right the world!
I have had a great life and don't think it is my time to cut it any shorter than it needs to be but leave it up to the higher powers.
I am kind of hoping they will check me out at pre-op meeting tomorrow and one of them will say, why don't you stay the night and we will get the show on the road a bit early, Chuckle(You did read my mind!)
I guess we all get to feeling this way at this point, yes.
Since I have been able to bike 6 miles up until a few days ago my legs are ready for the chair lifts! I have my power lift chair that I am aiming for and have been playing on for two weeks now so not too worried about that part.
Raising and lowering in the bathroom without using arms is going to be a change. Maybes the trick is to sit on a child's potty chair on my power lift. OH! that is sooo bad in so many ways!
Only 2 stairs going in the front porch and one small step down in the house that I can maneuver easily. I am sending a post on my journal place tonight of my art area set up in the kitchen for the duration of my recovery so that I can get to sketches, lighting, blocks, pencils, hot tea! I am ready. I think I have learned from you that the arm lift to the table to draw might take awhile but I am set up by the back porch window to be able to read, nap, step out and walk in the backyard. Think I am set up well and Gary and Hunter will be here for companionship! I have wonderful neighbors of 2 yrs. already stepping up with good wishes and prayers. I am a very happy, lucky, blessed Lady!
My God Woman! 3 stories. How have you managed the stairs. As to mowing the lawn(which I also do since Gary works)or vacuuming? Do I have to crawl through the computer-reach out and throttle you! Do not be in a hurry to do the things that can wait until you are absolutely sure it will not compromise your healing process! Have you not read some of the journals with just that advice? Remember we are not all as able as "Marathon Man Tony"! Please take your time, I don't want to come home and start my recovery hearing that you set yourself back any, you hear?!!
Love the image of the dog and cat chasing each other and the cat sitting like a Buddha under the crepe myrtle.
We have a small crepe myrtle that Cindy an old friend brought down from her land in Placerville as the deer were eating it bald. It is one of my favorite things in the yard and blooming beautifully right now. Ours is a crepe myrtle "Tuscarora" I will post a photo of "Podsy" tonight. Our Kat uses it as a scratching post lately so I will have to adjust that situation soon. No worries about tomorrow just want to 'Pass" and be able to make it to surgery next week.

Hi there! I just got back from an appt. and read your post to me. I really enjoyed hearing about your husbands
"Klepper" now, hey there that just doesn't seem right, For those of you who haven't read Geri's recent post it mentions that her husband had a kayak
which is a klepper.
I am sorry he had Parkinson's as I am sure it robbed the both of you of time together in a very difficult way. I am hoping they are closer to a cure. It seems to have gotten more attention and that they are making strides. Your trip thru the thunderstorm was probably exciting as we have had similar episodes with our kayaks in our truck but all went well. There is also no more beautiful feeling than floating in a lake with the beautiful scenery taking your very breath away(have that now without the kayaking so it will have to wait awhile, yes!
I bet your husband had a great time assemblig the kayak. Must have been interesting to watch. Do you have any photos of you two kayaking? Some of my favorite times. Good to think of you sharing such time with the man you loved.
The Frog carving was one of my first larger blocks. I have been making stationary for years which requires only a 4x6 block. My new blocks are 9x12 and I like having all that room to wpread out. I have my newest print of a short haired pointer(hunting dog of a neighbor. I have several sketches that I will be carving when I get home and need to tone things down.

Dear Terrie
I am not getting alerts re heart valve journal messages, I have to go directly to my friends to see if a reply exists.
Interesting about the kayak, my husband was Hungarian, came here during the uprising, always wanted a "klepper" I think the original German kayak made of wood, as I recall 600 pieces to assemble it, he purchased the kit and assembled the kayak, he loved putting things together, guess it was his architect interest, we sometimes went kayaking on the Potomac river, all I remember is how hot and humid the weather, then to N.C. where there were crabs and fishing. He later enjoyed sailing it when he retired and later sold it when he was unable to use it, had Parkinson's , slowly destroys physical movement. He was very attached to his Klepper, even when we traveled to upstate NY - 8 hour driving, he made a special frame to attach the Klepper to top of our Toyota Celica, I recall driving thru a thunderstorm in Pennsylvania mountain with four of us and the Klepper anchored to hood of car, thought it might take flute with us in the car. Later went up to beautiful Adirondeck mtn. with it and had a beautiful ride.
your wood carving reminds me of an Aztec carving similar to those in Cancun caricatures.
love hearing from you

since you and husband are kayakers I will email some kayakers video close by at Great Falls,VA; I believe the Olympic team does practice there but unsure, it is a challenging water fall, turbulent water like a mixing bowl; son Claude kayaks with group in Colorado; when I saw the Great Falls video and exclaimed how dangerous the sport his response was they are doing what they love, and look at folks dying from cancer and the suffering with chemo they endure, better to enjoy life and live with endurance in sports, may loose life but what better way than suffering thru horrible illness; a young very experienced woman died last year at Great Falls, thus her fellow kayakers honored her memory

Terrie Syvertsen Good morning to you Geri!
Glad you liked the photos. Hunter is a pure English Springer Spaniel "Sir Hunter of River ridge Park" as a matter of fact. I found Him and his Brother one day through the want ads not long after my Golden Retriever "Annie" passed away(SPCA Puppy, and absolutely beautiful inside and out). She was quite old and her time came not long after Gary and I moved from the Bay Area up to Redding, Ca. I had been crying and dropped the newspaper on the floor and as I stooped to pick it up the paper folded together to an ad for Springer Spaniel Puppies for sale in Chico, Ca.. I left that morning before work and came back with Sherlock first. Gary came home and found out that there was a Brother we knew that was still available. We were in love. So next morning after talking to the Mothers owner I drove up to Chico again and Sherlock and I took home the last remaining puppy(Hunter)of 10 puppies.
It was one of the best decisions I was ever to make as the two of them have been an added benefit to life! Extremely great friends and companions and to watch them run and play along the mountains where we lived was the highlights of many days and nights! He (Hunter) is going to be my "Recovery Beacon" soon!
Kayaking- Gary and I are not the outdoorsy thrill seeking type, chuckle.
We started kayaking late in the Lakes, not rivers. nearest us when we were both beginning our 50's. (Never too late). We found a Man one day selling kayaks at an outdoor boat event up North. I was intrigued as these kayaks are large and you don't have to sit inside but step down and sit with a nice back/chair that gets placed into the seating area for back support. It also has the option of Peddling or paddling.
Rather than take up space "Google"
Hobie Kayaks(Gary's is a Mirage) and mine is a sport. as he is 6'5" tall and needs the leg space. you can fish in them(holes in boat for poles)and comes with an optional small sail for sailing. Look them up. Much fun and great exercise. Sorry to hear about the young lady kayaker but sports related accidents do happen but I am with your son that it is better to enjoy life and live it. If you ever find your way to California Lady I will take you out and you can "Play" on my Kayak. You would love it as I both pedal and paddle. I am usually taking photographs of the area along the shoreline(like the kayaking photos) as there is a storage hole right in the bottom of the kayak to place things and I always take my camera in a plastic bag and water tight carry bag that goes inside the little hole within reach. Great fun! Nothing like floating out on the middle of the lake and just taking in that fresh air and sunshine. My favorite thing is when the sea otters pop up around the kayak with swirling dragonflies zipping around in the air and touching down into the water, coming up and dancing around my face so close you see their dark black little eyes staring directly at you and their wings occasionally touch your face like those of the hummingbirds-
Oh yes, I love kayaking and anything to do near or on the water. If I were younger I would make a move to a houseboat one day(preferably when not in drought conditions!). Oh my there goes that imagination, chuckle.
Terrie the dreamer has to go take Hunter the "chaser" out to see Sister KAT! have a great day today Lady.
Here it is to us with "Cheerful Spirits",eh?

Hello "M" in Cornwall
I love that you talked to your House and hugged your apple tree! I knew of course that there were more "like me" out there somewhere, smile, smile great big smile. I will wait eagerly to read about your cottage story! I also agree that resilience and fortitude are needed for this surgery and I am doing my best to have both.
I am surprisingly nor have I been for many weeks afraid of the next step for me to have a healthy heart again. If I could I would present myself as a big surprise at my surgeon's breakfast table this morning and say let's get on with it this morning I am ready!(I realize that many of us on "site" are in the same mental place with this. So I am just a few days away from pre-op stuff that will put me one step closer to that goal so please understand I am nervous to a degree but ready to put it in the surgeon and his teams hands. I have given up to this Universe and the God I have believed in to take over the reins and steer me and my life to wherever I was meant to go. I am very confident in the Kaiser Permanente Health Organization being the right place for my surgery(thank you on that note to my San Francisco-Kaiser connection!) as I was given supportive information which helped set my mind at ease.
I also know that my husband Gary is another "Brick" of a man and will be here for me which I am ever so thankful for. So "M" I appreciate all the loving support and hope to come out like many of you with a continued step by step progression of healing hours and days that will lead up to that normalcy we have been lacking!
I think you are the third person this week who has hit the "nail" on the weeks before surgery being the most stressful time. That comment about enjoying your surroundings is just what I have been doing for the past couple of months more so than ever as I do realize from all the helpful posts on our community site that recovery will take time and patience of which I have both! I hope you will take care to give yourself credit for each little change for the better you find yourself experiencing while in recovery just as the rest of the "graduates" should. I am happy to hear the pleasure in each persons as they tell of the miles or feet they walked after surgery! That they can now sleep back in bed or hug their grandchildren carefully. Every little step is an important one and please be proud and happy for every little top of the mountain you complete!
Continued healing and shared love to you across the pond and around the world! (I will be waiting on that cottage story Lady!) Love, Terrie

hi terrie liked your last journal entry. i hugged my apple tree and spoke to my house before my surgery. i will tell you the story of our cottage find in email as its a bit lengthy but i do believe there is a path layed out in life and sometimes we follow that path and its just meant to be. what you said about your status in your family probably made you the strong resiliant person you are today and this operation definitately needs resiliance and fortitutude before and after. i have to keep reminding myself its a very short period since surgery and not to expext to run before i can walk. my husband is an absolute brick. i am the one who coped with the ups and downs but now he has taken over that role and does it even better. this is the most stressful time of all just before surgery and i think it was ginger who said take time out and enjoy your surroundings. i am constantly thinking of you and cant wait for the other side of the reboot when you can start planning the future. love mary

Terrie,
Thank you for sharing the lovely pictures. We have two bichon frise dogs. Mandy and Zeke. They are my babies!!
As far as writers I just enjoy how you write.
I know how you feel like let's get this surgery over so you can begin healing.
I went to my surgeons office today. I am doing well. Incision in groin is still draining a bit. I can begin to do stairs. About two more weeks and driving. I am in no hurry. I am loving this time where my job is to heal! My surgery was done under my right breast. ,(they call it non invasive here at The Ernst Heart Center. Its not as invasive but to me it was invasive.
You will be on the road to recovery before you know it. Ging, Mike, Eleanor will all show you the ropes.
Looking forward to having an ice cream meeting by Skype or in person once your feeling well. I already feel that my
breathing in my chest is better.
What day do you go into the hospital (the 20th).
Thinking of you, praying for you and here for you whenever you call on me.
May you sleep well my sis under that same beautiful moonlight as me and the rest of our heart family!!
Butterfly kisses, Eskimo hugs, dragon fly licks and pleasant dreams.
Talk to you tomorrow!

Loved the pictures Terrie!! Somehow am not surprised you're a blonde because all but one of my dearest friends are blondes and my daughter and my husband !! I just love those blondes I guess :)
Was very touched by your post . Fear is a very real and human part of this operation . It's a very big surgery although common now and majorly safe . Distraction by good things and activities is the key to some peace of mind before the surgery , at least for me it was . The fear never totally goes away but knowing you have the best care you can and then just relaxing into the outcome as the best outcome you can imagine ( I did major visualization for this) and some prayers of course ... Then you will wake up and be wonderfully joyous with a wonderful new heart!! I do think the fear and loneliness are totally part of the process before . Because no matter how much support you have you go into the surgery alone but that's when you give all your confidence to your surgery team and god and " poof" you're asleep and then awake!! And then sharing with all your heart brothers and sisters about your journey in your very special writing style !! ( guess we'll have to suffer through Gary for awhile at first :)
Take good care of yourself !! We'll all be here!! Love, Lynn

Yes! Hunter is adorable. So is the kayaker with the beard! (and no that is not me, chuckle) I am actually not worried about the surgery just tired of the wait and it is almost here. I will feel better with the pre-op done and just the few days to go! Thank you for your support and I appreciate sharing your feelings as it does ease on the stress level. Gary and I used to kayak every possible weekend as our former home was 12 minutes from it. It is a great place for boating, kayaking, camping or just a picnic day! While kayaking there is an opportunity to observe wild eagles nests and if you paddle under the bridge there are massive swallows nests with birds galore. Very exciting times spent there and those photos we posted are what I plan to focus on while I can still focus as they were the most wonderful times we have had so far in memory! It is a place to make plans and LA is not all that far off if you want to visit what is known as "God's Country". We used to have views of the Mountains and Mt. Shasta and there are many other beautiful vacation places to visit with great national park
gift shops and not a heck of a lot of people at once on the beaches.
I plan to start to drive up after my heart surgery once again and visit my friends that I haven't seen in years at the art gallery up in Redding located on the Sacramento River! I am hoping to join some kind of art group here in my town of Manteca but was too busy moving in, painting the house by hand, planting the plants we brought down with us to do it yet. Santa Monica is a beautiful place! I am right the other side of Sacramento a ways in more of an older agricultural town. It is the closest place we could afford nearest Gary's workplace! Happy Here!
Take care! Terrie

You have seen, even in the dark of the night, when you reach out, we answer. You are never alone. And that same SuperMoon highlights the east coast, and has us all moon gazing along with you, with a three hour time difference, but with the same awe. died laughing about the art, I noticed in yoga a few arts, and actually googled it, said Vart is the word, women fart from the vagina is quite common in yoga, since I am retired I try to not eat anything several hours before hand, it is quite amusing when someone has an escaping noise, I mentioned the "vary" to the young yoga instructor and she said it is very common, she also mentioned women having the same effect during sex, voila!!

Terrie Syvertsen Hello Geri! You crack me up. What I didn't mention was I also had the problem in the pool as some claimed I was "Jet Propelled"! Happy to inform you that I learned to eat less fruit before exercising real quickly!
I am going to learn T'ai Chi. Bought the cd with 2 daily practices which promise to learn new moves, feel a truer experience, heighten cardio benefits with less start and stop. Sounds great to me(whatever the hell it means!) I have a really cute park across the street where I plan on getting all the older and fun people on my block to follow me(like the pied piper)across the street to join me from beginner to pro "Chi" enlightenment of exercise. What I really want to do is have fun and a lot of laughter participating in an exercise where so many of us will be unbalance to begin with that this will be a "hoot". I plan on rolling in laughter on the grass for the most part. Hell, while I am on the ground laughing I might just throw in a couple of "Salutations to the Sun"!
You sound like you are doing well and I am so happy for you. I am looking forward to pre-op this Friday and then, ta da, 5 days and it is "happening".
You take care and keep in touch. Gary knows how to post for me and will keep y'all updated. I also want to sketch the nurses and carve a block I can carve, print and send to them as a thank you. This might just be an interesting creative diversion! Love you kid, Terrie

Every hospital is different, and every surgeon's office has their own rules, but one thing in my patient's handbook, which luckily I read beforehand, is how they recommend dealing with the incision. Dial liquid soap and a fresh washcloth only for the incision, then another one for face and rest of the body. And, separate drying cloth for the incision. Fortunately I had bought a package of white washcloths, and hadn't used them, so I opened them up, laundered and folded them, stacked up in my bathroom. That way, it was and is easy to manage without having the washing machine always running. Like Geri said, have a good "landing spot" outside the shower is good, too, to sit down and dry off. My shower is next to the tub, so there is a nice area there where I leave a towel and sit there to dry off. In addition to Dial liquid, they recommended Dove liquid, for sensitive skin and without fragrance. The scar is tiny, and I expected it to hurt, but the hurt comes more from the right chest, where muscles and nerves are trying to get back together after their breakup! Everything is fine though, day by day.

Terrie Syvertsen Eleanor, Thank you for answering a question I was going to ask about cleaning the incision as I have sensitive skin. Dial is also recommended by Dr. Oz as well as for shampoo. The separate cloth ideas are great so that I will be prepared ahead of time/laundry done, etc. Good thinking. I will get that done today while I am out. Hoping "Hunter" will not be my landing spot, so thanks for making me thinking that one through too.

Terrie Syvertsen Hello Lynn! You and Karen are sweet. I have learned from this site about lack of sleep and actually I don't mind as it is when I have always taken off to a corner of the house and slapped on headphones and played a string of music that I love while sketching some of the little(vast) images that find their way into my brain when most people are sleeping) I do the same thing with writing now that I have time to write.
I save the transfer of sketches to my linoleum blocks for carving and the carving is best done in the proper daylight in between tending the garden and outdoor things. I have wonderful light in my kitchen window where Gary moved my great grandmother's old buffet and I use as my art table. It is the perfect area in our old house(1976)
Cozy and placed where I can enjoy the activity in the small park across the street. Before I go into surgery I will post a photo of my old letterpress machine(hand operated) where I print my work. I am a former typesetter and have the metal type collection where I plan to print my own book of poetry that I have written off and on between jobs and life over the last 40 years. It will be a glorious time. Hand setting the metal pieces from sentence to sentence and hand printing the pages. I plan on 2015 being the year of the Book of Poetry and will be happy to send off copies to you and Karen and anyone else who might want a copy. It will be a job of love and in my printer out in the garage a dream fulfilled. So I actually thank all of you of late who have complimented my posts as they also are meant primarily to maybe change focus off and on from the stress and offer up some support and twinges to your hearts. There are so many out in our community who do the same for me and continue to make me feel alive and hopeful for a wonderful retirement time. So Lynn, thanks for the encouragement and helping to keep me grounded at a time where I could really be having a far worse time of it. Your posts and responses are equally a comfort to me and others.

Terrie Syvertsen Dear Bill and James,
Thank you for your post to me and the kind words of support.
I took the time while taking a tea break this afternoon to read about you, your story, journals and some of the guestbook replies.
Couple of notes: Love the name of Kitty: Hermione and intrigued by "Cookie Empress Ve Anna" and Flower Arranger Extraordinaire"
It was also good to hear of someone with weight goals prior to and after surgery as yes, we are alike in that arena. It is amazing and sad that other medical issues can slip in to make things more complicated when the focus is on such things as OHS.
Clearly as it is pointed out by our community time and time again. We each have a unique journey while on this road to better health and we can't assure ourselves that what is working for one will be our experience. All we can do is what your have shown in sharing your story in journals as you have is that it is a one day, one evening at a time thing and their were no assurances that this path would be easy now, were there?
You seemed to have the best team for support and they are to be applauded if not hugged very very hard(now that you might be able to do that without causing extreme pain!
When I read your words I am reminded at the age of 65 it is ok to let down walls and open up to the love and kindness of others who have offered up their own words, time, prayers and information where my life becomes more enriched by all of it. So, your story is in its early phase and may your
chapters unfold to your liking!
By the way, I have already warned Gary(my husband) to be prepared for me (if the tube is already out) "On a Clear Day", or The sun will come up tomorrow!" It was going to be my way of showing him I had woken up.
He told me to behave but I make no promises! Good evening guys.

Terrie Syvertsen Geri- Appreciate your advice especially since you have graduated already.
However it is a no no on having 2 shower stools as I am not a petite woman and my husband weighs over 300 lbs. is 6'5" tall and is built like Paul Bunyan. The thought of us putting two of those spindly stools on top of our outdated shower floor leaves me with the frightful image of a shower where the neighbors after hearing our cries for help find both Gary and I (me lathered up)underneath the floor and into the sandy foundation dirt stuck in the mud with the need for assistance!
Me not being able to lift or pull myself up-Him crawling wildly for the exit trap door above our bedroom closet for a not so noticeable escape.
But yes, We went out and bought the one which will do the trick as my intent on the no need of a second one is to simply draw the shades and run around while Gary cleans up all the soap and watery mess we have made while I simply "air dry" We live in an older home that has the original shower stall that has a chair in the corner as well as the original hand held shower wand which works great. The plan is to put down a rubber mat that we bought today as it is a bit oversized and the stool we bought adjusts to 21-1/2" tall. If the chair fits on top of the mat it also butts(no pun intended)up against the little corner seat so it shouldn't slide or tip. Since I also love to sing in the shower(can't help myself) I am afraid two shower stools might have me off playing musical chairs when I am sure washing my hair will need to be the primary focus. Gary has learned after 37 years with me that my need to be amused surpasses my ability to focus! I thank you for the tips and do take them seriously. I think I am a bit "wobbly "as "M" from across the pond has stated before(and I love that term)but wobbly I be from lack of sleep due to Moon interference!
Later dear Lady, going to bed!

Terrie Syvertsen Here I am again!! Guess I am waiting for the moon after all. Didn't know you had the Mini Sternotomy. So glad for you. Why did you delay the four years if you don't mind me asking? I am glad your breathing is such improved! I would love to get back into yoga but had a horribly personal event doing it.
You see, I was just a beginner and sandwiching an hour of my lunch from work(where I stood setting type all day on my feet)Anyway I would do my beginning yoga class at the YMCA and trot down and swim laps at the pool, shower and dry off in time for a quick sauna, grab some fruit, yogurt and whole wheat crackers and head back across the street to the dept. store where I worked on the 5th. floor and set type for another 4 hours(on my feet.
Well, I was fit as a fiddle. Long blonde hair, blue-eyed lady of 20 yrs. thinking I was looking pretty darn good and feeling my oats.
3rd. day into this new exercise regimen yours truly began to do the yoga "Salutation to the Sun" and while in the upward position rolled down and rolled out(I bet you see this coming)the longest, loudest, smelliest
-art heard round the world. I mean it was one of the most embarrassing moments I'd ever endured as my two co-workers were directly behind me.
Needless to say, co-workers loved asking me in future to skip the fruit and yogurt and go directly to the pool.
Haven't attended a class since. True story! Footnote: still enjoy my blueberries and yogurt for breakfast.

it is a good idea to have a power recliner , I didn't get one due to scheduling, and was able to survive slowly manipulating body out of bed, but probably my years of exercise and hip injury prepared me for the roll over routine, a recliner is much easier.

Me too, I keep my hair short since I like to be outside, gardening and playing with the dog and cat in the back yard, and northern VA is hot and humid in the summer. Hi, Terrie. I forgot to mention that I did actually go to my hairdresser on the Sat. before surgery on Monday. I imagined I would not be able to wash my hair for a few days, and was right, it was on release day, day 5! I needed it so that I could manage to wash it myself, and air dry since the first weeks were robot arms, with elbows at waist and no hair dryer. Good to get a pedicure too, since you will not be touching your toes for a couple of weeks, unless you are more able to bend over than I was. Now I can, but weeks 1 and 2 were limited mobility. Get pampered, so you can more easily care for yourself afterwards. I am still careful with our dog Lucy ( 9 lbs.) and Toby the cat (13 libs) since both love to jump on me when I'm sitting down. I have to block both of their enthusiasm, as hitting my chest is the last thing I need. But I am back to playing with them and can actually now throw Lucy's "Angry Bird" toy for her to retrieve. I know Hunter will be part of the homecoming committee for you along with your husband. You will be able to do many things, but will also find simple things a challenge for the first two weeks. Your body will tell you loud and clear what you cannot do! I am counting down the days with you, and wish you the easiest of recoveries. Love to you.

Terrie Syvertsen Good morning Eleanor!
No hairdresser for me as I have and keep a "pixie" type cut as it is easier for me to keep up and doesn't get in my face(in the way of my printing, and activities where the wind is bothersome! I also got annoyed while biking around my park in "Squares" with my neighbor everyday last summer as the hair kept getting in my eyes and mouth. So off it came and now I have great fun biking with my hair just kind of playing on top of my head and when I stop I am looking pretty tousled but in place! Being a swimmer I have also kept it short to shave off time from the races I do at 24 hour fitness with all the other dog paddling SENIORS!!!!!!!!(only kidding!)
Most amusing visual you had for a moment though, huh?!!!!
I am also not worried about Hunter jumping on my lap or the bed these days as his hips at age 13 won't allow this Springer Spaniel to Spring......
I will be careful though as he is a constant at my side day and night. It is going to be the most important thing about returning home to me and I am going to have to ask the surgeon to keep that in mind!
Thanks for being a sweetheart and sharing your tips with me and helping to easy any nerves. So far doing pretty good in that direction.
Continued "healing" my friend.
Love, Terrie

Hi Terrie
sorry for the delay in communicating, somehow when son Claude from Denver shared my gmail, the heart valve alerts went into spam mail.
I have what I think is a miraculous recovery, no heavy pain, I try to adhere to sternum precautions in moving arms, lifting, etc.
I was at rehab hospital for six days, since I live alone it was best to be watched, then released to my son here from Denver, he just returned late today. the visiting nurses and phys. therapist have started to visit at home.
slowly I am feeling more balanced in walking and confident I will improve, one must keep trying and be very patient, recovery and healing take 6 to 8 weeks and as one phys. therapy. explained you must realize the former energy you had is now directed to recovery and healing, your energy level will return
I was so happy not to have been awake when throat tube was removed, had read some horror stories of patients re this
if possible I suggest you go from hospital stay to rehab hospital, your husband can visit and you will still receive numerous physical, occupational and other therapies, besides all meals
I contacted an urinary tract infection at the rehab hospital, they treated it immediately
love your stories about the cold coffee and Hunter, you are an engaging person and writer, love hearing from you
I know you will keep positive and go forward with the surgery, even if it is delayed for a few days as mine was, God must have had a reason
take care and keep up the great spirit

Too bad about the "Spamed alerts" but I am sure you have been on site to read all of your messages?!
Your recovery going so well is a great piece of news. I had been worried as you mentioned before you were alone
at home after surgery so I figured your Son would step up and help out and you were just out there at the "Hacienda de Recovery" sipping a large iced tea and watching the clouds form into amusing fluffy animals overhead! "Big thing/making it awakened "Tube Free" something most of us fret about it seems.
So you have the full "Zipper" from surgery? I am happy to hear you are doing well in the "pain" dept.
It was grand of Claude to be with you for this time and I am sure He knows how much he was appreciated. I bet you are just happy to have this done and over with, yes? Now the job of healing both mentally and physically.
I would imagine the mental part is a very big cornerstone of how your recovery will go. I think you to be a pretty upbeat take charge kind of gal who will behave and do what is necessary to gain back your strength and look forward to this second chance your heart has been given. I am extremely happy for you and hope you will keep updating us of your progress. I expect to learn from you and all of the other's who are on "Recovery Row" with you. Bless your Hearts!
By the way, Gary, my husband is going to be taking 2 weeks of his vacation to stay with me and has an additional week added on for the surgery time and afterwards so he can be with me.
He is the only Family I have (at least that is involved in my life) so I plan to do everything I must to get back home and start work at living again. So much has happened leading up to our surgeries that have derailed us in life. It has been years now and you are here with this new day, mended heart and just full of love and are loved!
I am just so happy for you.
You have a great healing day and I am sure we will connect lots! Love, Terrie

First off, if you enjoy that cup of coffee to start the morning off as I do You will never learn to like decafe, chuckle.
I think before that I will switch to some really exotic Tea!!!
Some habits are just so hard to break!
I see you live in Portland. You are probably one of the closest people from our site to me here in Manteca.
Glad to have someone seem a little closer in our community.
I am looking forward to your posts as you learn more from your tests what is going on and your treatment plan. IT is always a big relief when we know the course of action so that we feel we are moving forward and get a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel! It will also be good to have the understanding and support from those who can relate to you about heart matters. So I really am glad you found this site and hope it is as much a comfort to you as it is to me(and many of us!) Have a great day!

Terrie, I have been thinking about you and your countdown, or count up, towards your surgery. I know that you will be fine, you're going to a good hospital and you trust the surgeon, and you have a great support in your husband. But, I remember the days before the prep and the actual surgery day as full of nerves, questions and wondering. I can honestly say, I over-thought everything, and I worried for actually nothing. I have never felt pain in my sternum, not even right after the surgery. Pain, yes, but from where the chest tubes hit a nerve or something, but once they were out, I really did not need more than Tylenol Extra Strength. Isn't the human body amazing? With surgery on 7/14, I was released by the surgeon's office on 7/28 and today by the visiting nurse. I was not able to secure an appt. with the cardiologist until 8/18. If you can plan ahead, you might want to schedule your own for week 3, so unlike me you will not be between doctors for a while. Since I did not even have a cardiologist, it was a bit tricky for me, so I hope you can line your guys up better than I did.
I am thinking of renewing the rental of the electric recliner for another month, for I have only tried my bed twice, both with less than stellar results. I sleep well in the recliner, all decked out with soft sheets, and a freedom to move whenever I need to get up, sit up, recline more, etc. Such a pleasure!
My arms are slowly being reclaimed, less of robot with elbows at waist. The nurse this morning did remind me of sternal precautions until week 6-7. No need, my sternum reminds me just fine!
I hope you wait time is easy and that you will bounce back in no time, we are all in your corner! Love you and your husband.

Terrie Syvertsen Hello there Eleanor- Great to hear from you and I am always happy to see a post from you whether it be directed to me or elsewhere!!!
I am happy you are doing well in your recovery and follow your posts taking notes!
My husband and I appreciate all the good thoughts you send our way in terms especially of the great support.
I appreciate today's pep talk as it just so happened you caught me on a bit of an "overthink" day! Not too bad but I have moments where the reel just keeps spinning of all the things I want to get done to be ready for the return home and that I want Gary to get back to work as soon as possible. (I am sure time off with me for two weeks will have him chomping at the bit as at times I am sure the boredom of it all for the caregivers has to hit!
I have to say that I am blessed to have him here and willing to be such a great support. I realize there are many not so lucky in that department.
You are correct in that I trust my surgeon and his experience with valve surgery. The hospital I am sure will be good up to the point I haven't heard from anyone who has come from surgery at the location: Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara, Ca.(Put that out there in case anyone knows of anyone!) You hear about all of the recommended Heart Valve Clinics but I have heard nothing about any of the patients treated at any of the Kaiser locations yet. I have gone online trying to also find any recommendations of my surgeon and again, nothing which I wish were different.
My cardiologist says that Kaiser is good and the surgeons are some of the best. Well, I am putting my heart in his hands so I will have to trust his word!
I am getting antsy as the wait lengthens but for the most part the only worry is that nothing holds up my date at pre-op. I am ready to go mentally and like others who have gotten "bumped" and dates changed will not be a happy camper should that happen. So I will move forward to the 15th pre-op being positive which will take me near to the surgery on the 20th.
I think too that it is hard with so many of us going in and now out into recovery that I am used to posting with
that I feel like the straggler!
I am sure there will be those going in with me that I will be able to relate to their recovery too!
Thinking of Victor as I type and soon it will be Bob! All the others getting ready.
This is the hardest thing, isn't it THE
WAITING and how sweet it was for you to write me just when I needed all of the reminders, every one of them so true and what I really needed today.
So thank you Eleanor and I hope your recovery continues to run smooth for you and that one day I can swap stories with you soon! Oh yes, I will make and appointment with my Dr. like you suggest ahead of schedule so it will be easy to get in! Great idea.
Take it easy with the stretching and follow orders. Also good idea to keep your chair awhile longer!
Have a great afternoon and thanks again. Love, Terrie

Hi Terrie, I have decided that you have a lot to say and you do it so very well. I enjoy reading your journal and your notes to me and my situation. Have you ever written professionaly..... like a book or something? Like you I have a companion of a pet family member. My family member is a cat named France since she was a rescue cat from Hurricane Frances in 2004, which was a direct hit on Florida east coast where I live. She was just a kitten of approximately 2 month old. She hangs out in her special spots and watches over me during the night time. This type of surgery is truly life changing so continue to soak it all in. Have a great day. Your friend and heart buddy.

Terrie Syvertsen My Dear Buddy Susan and Frances,
Thank you for your compliments. I am glad you enjoy my writings/posts as it gives me great pleasure to have a "place" to direct my thoughts, feelings at this time and just as importantly receive the knowledge, support and encouragement as we all go through our heart journeys. No I haven't written professionally but have written journals, poetry most of my adult life because I love words, period.
I was also a "typesetter" for a period of time where the use of metal type and the job itself became a passion and a job that has been one of my favorites!
How great that you rescued Frances out of a Hurricane! Now there is a story in itself! I bet she really appreciates all the love and attention she gets from you and is a great comfort, especially in your recovering time! The same thing with Hunter Our Pets keep us grounded, don't they?!How is life where you live since the Hurricane? I hope you were not Hit hard yourself.
My Cousin Mike(female) and her husband retired to a place called Okeechobee, Florida and they love it there. We have talked about going for a visit one of these days as I haven't seen her in over 30 years! She lived most of her life in Maryland before heading to Florida and I have always lived in California. It will be good to visit her as she is also into photography and quilts. so I want to visit and see her work.
You are right in the surgery being life changing as I read all of the stories here in our community and witness the changes taking place from month to month, actually day to day, yes? It is almost my time and I hope to take all of the invaluable lessons I have learned from everyone(yourself included) with me when I go forward!
I also enjoy reading what your write in our posts here too Susan. You are always reaching out and offering your opinions to people who really appreciate the time you take and the comfort and support you also continue to give. I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with you and having you to turn to for advice in my recovery as well, if you don't mind.
Please keep us updated on the recent tests/lungs! Bee Well! Love and a large Hug from Terrie, Hunter and Kat(our rescue neighborhood cat!

What is left of you that is, ha ha. I have to admit Mozart looks much better than the last time I raised the clippers to "Hunter"! I think Mozart is sweet! Actually your whole array of Family photos is wonderful. Now I can "see" who each of you are! Very
pretty ladies in the family and the Men
quite handsome! I am going to have to figure out how to get the photos up on mine this weekend so that you can see Hunter too! Wish he was able to be a lap dog again but his tendency to "Spring" as springer's do! would be a disadvantage with the "zipper" plus he weighs too much! Take care!

Interesting that you and Lynn both have the same "take" on this morning's Journal entry.
Truth be I write- push", submit" and hope that I haven't gotten too emotional or personal to offend someone out there.
I re-read what I wrote just now and can see how that would be a way of interpreting the written words.
I kind of like that idea and thank you for pointing that out to me. And thank you too for the prayers.
Truth be, I have had these "gentle, spiritual moments within about so many of the people in our community that the feelings came to a brim(much like the decafe and came out in words this morning. It comes from the concern of others and the build up of all the days waiting for my own surgery!
We are getting there though, eh Brother!
Have a great day today. Thinking of you and Linda- Terrie
