Hey Sherry, I;ve been thinking about you. Reading your last post to yourself I say slow down girl. Take some time for yourself. Just like everyone told me around Christmas time when I just started rehab and decided to decorate the house, I wound up pretty sore. Well I was reminded that I just like you just went thru major surgery and it takes a long time to heal. The outside might look good but the inside is trying to catch up. You dont want to wind up back in the hospital. You are about a month after me and I still hurt. So friend dont go shooting yourself in the foot that hurts even worse lol. Keep up the good work. Talk later.Oh Elsie agrees with me. She is still a baby and getting use to her new home.

Sherry--
Diagnosed a year ago as a candidate for AVR, I soon stumbled onto HVJ, and have read 95% of the Journal postings since then. Those postings have done more to keep the puzzle of my life and re-hab together than has any surgeon, institution, or cardiologist.
About a week ago, I read your posting "Pieces of the Puzzle." It is a work of art, the most beautiful and touching post on the HVJ that I have seen. I re-read it often.
You are to be praised for your talent, understanding, and compassion.
Thank you very much.

Hi Sherry, Sorry to hear about your sweet little dog. That is so hard when you are trying so hard in getting back to work. Just take one day at a time. It will all fall into place again. Its hard getting back to normal or I should say the new normal. But I can say your dog is in a beautiful place and I bet he is very happy. So sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved bulldog--how sad!
Glad to hear that your memory and ability to go back to work has worked out. While I am retired, I am on a number of boards and committees and I hope that I will be able to get back to my roles as soon as you have.
I am not surprised that you haven't been able to keep up with your plans for exercise. It can't be easy, going back to work and having a long commute when your heart and chest are still healing. I am sure you will get back to your plans in time.

Sherry Bradford Thank you! I appreciate the support! The memory part was disconcerting to say the least. I am sure you will do just great. I think that surgeons and anesthesiologists are recognizing the need to warm us up more slowly after being on the heart/lung machine and that is making a difference in the return to normal brain function. Don't be alarmed if you have some issues at first. Even though you will feel great faster than you expect, your body will have been through a trauma and has lots of inflammation. As that subsides, things improve fast. I was going to start riding our rail service next week, but with the flu outbreak, I think I will drive a bit longer. I would rather have a sore incision area right now than bouts of coughing! Take care and keep in touch!

Sherry Bradford Hi there! This site doesn't automatically list who is responding so I am not sure who left this post but thank you for the encouragement! I start back next Wednesday which will be a short week. I want to try full time during that week to see how I do. But folks there are very kind and considerate. If I need to pause and rest, they will let me do so. The really tough part is for ME to slow down when I need to and rest when I can. I am much harder on myself than they would dream of being toward me! That's all part of that same self definition around work. One of the Rehab specialists said to me "We all have to realize that we are not indispensable when it comes to what we DO. It is who we ARE that is irreplaceable. They got by fine taking care of what you do while you were gone. What they want back is YOU so take care of yourself so you can be there for the long haul." I found that very encouraging.

Sherry Bradford That is so true - your whole system is chemically challenged by this surgery! I began taking Cymbalta several years ago to help with fibromyalgia and I think it has also helped keep the effects of surgery from being overwhelming. Though I have times like now when I am a bit down, I am grateful that it has not become more of an issue. I so appreciate that Adam addressed this in his book to really bring it out in the open. I think it catches some folks completely off guard. God bless you also and have a Happy New Year!

I was wondering how you have found work since you have returned. I have not gone back as yet. I am only two days behind you in recovery time. My surgery (Aortic Valve replacement) was 10/25. I have completed six Rehab sessions.
Because my work involves lifting, climbing up & down ladders, unpacking and breaking down boxes, etc. I am debating when and under what conditions I should return.
I had my children and family over for Christmas Eve. I went like a house afire for 10-12 hrs. Although I paid for it the next day or so, it was not as bad as I had anticipated and well worth it.
My biggest challenge is the incision. Any ladies out there have some suggestions? Wearing a bra sometimes is most uncomfortable to say nothing of the feeling of rawness and itching. I am sure it all means healing but after 8 wks. I thought it would be better. I have tried a variety of creams, clothing choices.
I am most fortunate that I can sleep in my own bed and have no problem with laying on my right or left side, stomach, etc. i never have had backaches.
Thank you so much.

Sherry Bradford Hi, Elizabeth! Congrats on doing well and starting your rehab! It will really help a lot. I start work on January 2nd so a few more days here at home. To tell you the truth, I am really nervous about going back. My job is at the computer all day and is very fast paced. It requires a sharp memory and lots of quick decisions. Since the surgery, I have had some struggles with memory, and I still need downtime mid-day. I definitely will not be 100% when I first go back. I will keep folks posted on how things go.
With your work being so physical, I hope you can stay off a bit longer and get some more rehab under your belt first. I have my last one Friday since that is when my current year insurance ends and I would have to pay out of pocket until I reached my next deductible and we just cannot afford. But I have a treadmill and weights at home and intend to carry on here.
I am glad you can sleep in different positions! That is great! My incision still hurts a lot if I sleep any way but on back and propped with pillows. Most of my waking hours it is not bad though unless I overdo.
At the suggestion of ladies on this site, I went to WalMart and bought some bras that are very soft and snap in front. They are like a post surgery bra and only cost about $8.00. I had to buy one size larger and I wish I had gone up two sizes ecause they shrink. I also bought a couple of the Ah bras. Those two styles were the only ones I could wear until the last week or so. Now I can wear any kind except those with an underwire. I had to cover my drain holes with a soft bandage until they were much more healed. Even now I sometimes have to do that -depending on how the bra is shaped. But minute I get home, off goes the bra. Honestly that is still the most comfortable.
The incision was more uncomfortable after 7-8 weeks for me than it was in the first few weeks after surgery. That surprised and disappointed me. By checking around the site, I found that was common. I think that may be a combination of our moving our upper body more as our stamina increases and the normal deep healing around the wires. Also, I found I was pushing with my arms more to get up or change position in bed, and that is really a no-no until after week 12. When I am more careful about that, I find it hurts less. Give it time. You are healing both "meat" and bone, so it takes time.
Hope some of that helps! Be sure to read Linda K and Connie T postings for lots of good practical tips. They are several weeks ahead of us in the healing process so that is very helpful!
Best wishes for the New Year and please stay in touch. Your posts will be so helpful to those who are right behind you in the recovery process!

Hey Sherry, Hey dont be so hard on yourself. You are doing great. It just takes a lot of time. I dont know what kind of work you do, but you will probably be coming home from work exhausted. Thats what everyone has said. Im lucky being retired. But I have been crocheting a couple of throws for my Grand daughters for Christmas. It has been making me sore but I just continue on. Sherry Bradford I think the thought of getting to work and appearing foolish has brought me the closest to wanting to seriously play the lottery! I wish this has happened three more years from now so I could maybe just retire. But it didn't so God must have a plan for me to get back in the saddle again and give it my best shot! :-)
I don't know why I get down about the progress sometimes. I am not sure why, but I had the silliest expectation that I would bounce back in four or five weeks. But really, when I stop being frustrated and anxious and really think about it my progress has been so good compared with many folks. I haven't had any serious complications or setbacks. What a blessing that is!
I am glad that you mentioned you still grab a pain pill once in awhile. I get by most days without any as well - with just needing one when I do more than I should. It is a REAL bad day when I have to have two - and that is when I usually start feeling like progress is tooooo slow.
I hope you get everything made in time for Christmas and have a wonderful holiday!

Hang in there! As you know....it all gets better....but geeze....it is hard waiting for the days to be the "ole gal" you once were. My biggest fear is that the memory has gone forever. Sherry Bradford Hopefully your time is long ways out! Someone told me today that the key to good sleep is to wear yourself out physically. That's hard with a major surgery because you start out worn out but I suspect that is still a true key. Work can be like that because it is so mental that you are exhausted but your body hasn't been worn out enough to shut down. I am learning that this is one of those things that you really have to take day to day. Probably good way to live all the time, actually! See you soon!

Hey Sherry, Glad to see you are doing so good. I admire you for going into rehab so soon. It does take a lot out of you so I think being tired is natural espically when you are doing it so soon. I didnt start until 8 weeks out and now I am sore and stiff. Espically my right arm and shoulder. That is my bad spot anyway. Sometimes afterward I will even go shopping for a while but later when I get up out of a chair oh boy. It hits.lol. I know when I do something just a little to much as I will get a pain and then think I shouldnt have done that. When you get so far out and feel good you kinda forget the limits. Maybe that is part of the healing. I havent been on here to much as not a lot happening these days. But im going to at least try and be on at least once a week. You just keep doing good. Sherry: Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am expecting to have AVR next year, so I am reading everything you say carefully and taking notes. I plan to reread them before the surgery for all of your helpful hints and experiences.
I had the cath done last month and I know what you mean about the soreness in the groin after. It took about 2 weeks. Everytime I went to use the kitchen sink, I would forget and lean against the counter. Ouch!! Fortunately I didn't have any itching or rubbing.
Good luck with your three day back to back rehab next week.
Fortunately I live in Canada and don't have to worry about insurance. Our medical care is all provided--no worries. We do have to wait a bit longer for some things--but it is nice to know that the care we need is there when we need it and no worries about who will pay and how much it will cover.

Hey Sherry, The bra I got from the hospital came in 1x 2x or 3x. I got the 1x and it fit just fine. When I dont where it I just where my old one that is falling apart and it is loose. I got it at Walmart a long time ago and they still have them for $5.95. They snap in front. It goes right over the bottom part of my incision. I do get them a little larger. Oh thats was funny. I have lost so much weight I really dont know what size I where anymore, so maybe that is helping lol
I would think a surgical supply place would have them. I not happy going out without the girls being in their little space.

Hi Sherry,Boy you are fast. You beat me to rehab.. I had trouble with where I was going to go and insurance being out of network. So I think I finally have a place and will be starting on Monday. Nothing wrong with 10 hours of rest. I bet I will be doing it also. I walked for a little longer and tried going a little faster, and that night couldnt sleep. I had like a back spasm. I finally took a pain med and finally got some sleep.
With the bra thing. Have you tried a surgical bra? I got one from the hospital and wore it home and kept it on all the time. It went right over incision as it is the full incision. I dont do the underwire type yet as I dont know. Most of my trouble is in my right shoulder. I have arthritus there and I think it has expanded area wise. Hope rehab will help with that.
I hope you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving day. Let someone else make dinner for you after 3 days of rehab. Thats time to kick back and enjoy dinner and the parades. Until later.

Sherry Bradford Hi there! So good to hear from you! I haven't tried a surgical bra. I have the full incision too. I will look into that. Did you get your regular bra size or a bit larger? I get a little worried about so much rest and start thinking I should be tougher on myself. I am glad that doesn't sound too crazy after the first day of rehab! I got started quick because I will probably only get about 4-5 weeks. I have to go back to work before too much longer and my insurance only pays the full tab through end of year. It is too expensive for me after that. But I have a treadmill and we are going to look at our local YMCA to see if we can afford that.
It is so good to hear from you and that things continue to go well! You keep me inspired! Happy Thanksgiving!!

Hi Sherry..
I can certainly relate to your fatigue from cardiac rehab! Those first two weeks, I was useless on MWF after my workouts! lol...Today, with only 7 more sessions left, it is hard to remember how exhausted I was. I am still tired on those days....but it is MUCH, MUCH better. When complaining to my doctor, thinking I should feel like a 30yr old (or at least my age LOL) again, he reminds me that I had two major surgeries, as well as being very symptomatic before surgery...and warns..."it just takes time". Give yourself some time....you will get there :). I think you are doing great!!!!
As for the bra....well..like you I sure had a difficult time wearing one. My chest tube sites took extra care to completely heal enough to wear even a sports bra....when I finally was able to wear one...the doctor had me wear it 24-7, for two months. I had such inflamation in my right breast from going so long without one....today...it still hurts a little...but it is not constant..
Each week you will notice the aches & pains of recovery less & less... :)... You are going in the right direction....keep up the excellent work...it won't be long before we are writing our 1st year testimonies for the newbies!!! :) :)
Take care Sherry...look forward to reading your journals!

Sherry Bradford Connie it is so great to hear you are continuing to do well! Thank you for the encouragement that I am on track. That helps so much as it is such a complicated journey! We should invent a bra for this and could make a lot of folks happy and maybe take a trip somewhere! Haha! I have thought about trying the old wraps from the 1700s! Hugs and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

I was exhausted after my first cardiac rehab and a little bummed because I was really sore afterwards but I am happy to report that after the first couple times things got a lot better.

Sherry Bradford Natalie that is encouraging to hear! Were you very active before surgery? I had become so fatigued that I was not doing anything resembling pushing myself. It feels so good to finally move. I hope I get past the complete wipeout phase soon. So glad to hear from folks that it gets better! Hang in there and congratulations on your recovery going well!

Sherry,
Congrats! The scary part is over! I too am suffering from aortic stenosis - having had a heart murmur since childhood. Am expecting to go through valve surgery in a few months probably in Houston, but will consider Dallas as well - my cardiologist will discuss my options at my next appt.
Meanwhile, thanks for continuing to post on your progess. God Bless!

I am happy to read that you had such a good visit. It helps those of us that are awaiting surgery to know how it is on the other side. I am sure life is much more precious now. Hope you continued improvement each day.

Sherry Bradford That is so true. Every deep breath is so sweet! It is well worth the wait, surgery, and healing. For the first time in many years I woke up a few days ago feeling truly rested. That is a brand new feeling! All my best to you!

Glad to hear the visit went well! Think about you lots!
Hi Sherry,
I had my 4th echocardiogram this AM & unfortunately my aortic stenosis has become worse & my FNP in the cardiology dept. says it's time for a valve replacement to keep ahead of the deterioration. I am an 81 yo retired RN anesthetist so pretty much know what's ahead. I've read your journal from start to the last entry & it surely makes the future procedure & recovery seem much easier than I've anticipated. Thank you for keeping & posting your journal. I'll add another note when my 'big day has come & gone' to let you know how things went.

Sherry Bradford The wait is difficult and once you get through the surgery you will feel so much better! I am so glad that some of my posts have helped! I look forward to reading yours! You will get so much great advice and support on this site! Everyone's experience is a bit different but much is similar that you will find answers to many of your questions.
It may be a challenge to be off your feet and in the care of others. Bit I hope you can relax and just focus your efforts on breathing exercises and the walks and bed exercises! It takes a lot of energy to heal so that is your sole job after surgery! When you are a few weeks into recovery you will wonder why you waited! You will do great and I bet you feel better than you have in awhile!
Hugs and you are in my prayers!

That was the other thing he said to tell you. Don't worry about setting goals: you will get plenty of goals to reach in rehab!
