Hi Richard,

My name is Sean and I just had aortic valve replacement on July 23. I already feel so much better. The recovery is tuff but is well worth it. I chose a mechanical valve due to my age (33). What are you going with. Best of luck

Richard,

No need to thank me. Actually, I should be the one thanking you. Writing my book and developing this website has been the most rewarding experience of my life. (Next to, of course, getting married and having an incredible son.)

It's an honor and privilege to be able to support you, Richard. So, thank you!

Keep on tickin!

We'll compare scars. Since you're the only guy that I know that has this problem and surgery it's not bad at all. My cow moos all the time and I'm still lying down and chewing grass. It gets cold in winter. Wishing you a speedy recovery so you can get back to work.

Hi Richard:

Thanks for your words of encouragmeent to me. I leave for Cleveland on Wednesday and will follow a similar drill. I have tests on Friday the 6th - and will be praying for you and your surgical team. Then on Monday I have my heart catherization, and head to surgery on Wednesday after meeting with Dr. Gillinov. At least the Cardinals won the last two games. We will see how it goes tonight against Houston.

Hi Richard

Have you ever been to the Air Canada Centre before? It's really a great facility. I assume you'll be staying at a downtown hotel which will be within walking distance or a short taxi ride away from all you wish to see. The ACC is also right in the middle of the theatre section and there are lots of great restaurants downtown as well. The CN Tower is within walking distance so you might want to take a ride up the tower and look around. There is a great revolving restaurant at the top which is very affordable. We have friends who have season tickets to all the games. It's always nice to see a game in person. Certainly something to look forward to. My hospital was downtown Toronto and I watched the light show on the CN Tower each and every night....all night long!

Hi Richard

Welcome to HVJ. I had a mitral valve repair in Oct/09 with a full sternotomy and just want to say it's really not all that bad. First couple of days are the toughest but it beats the alternative. You have chosen a wonderful facility so let the doctors do their job and you do yours. Try and keep calm as possible and be as informed as you can so that you realize when you wake up, and you wil wake up, that all the tubes, wires and gadgets are normal and get removed very quickly as you recover. Good luck.

Good Morning Richard

Like Mark and Anne, I also had my surgery at the CC this past March. Dr Gillinov gave me a bovine mitral valve and did a tricuspid repair. I was also there for 2 days of testing and met Dr G the day before my surgery. He is wonderful, knew I was at the right place with the best doctor when we met him. He is also very humble, an unusual trait for most surgeons (I am an RN). With the hundreds of people who go thru the heart pavilion every day I never felt like a number. It is very personal. You are in the best of hands, be positive, try to stay relaxed, get informed and do whatever the staff tells you to do and you'll be fine. As others have said,it's not that bad and this time next month you'll be well on the road to recovery. Prayers from FL for a successful surgery on the 6th.
