Natalie,
Good Luck! I had the very same condition that I was born with and it was discovered when I was 22 and watched for 16 years. I had AVR in Feb of last year with a Bovine tissue valve. I had all the same questions fears you may have. I can tell you for me waiting was the worst part. It's been 16 months since my surgery and I feel 10 years younger.
You will be surprised of what you can do. I also had a bunch of pajamas but I made myself get dressed in normal clothes. I didn't want an excuse of not doing anything. I was walking 4 miles a day after being home for 3 weeks.
My kids helped alot. My oldest was 5 when I had the surgery(now 7). I didn't want them to come and see me in the hospital because I knew i would look diff and with the meds I wouldn't be in the right frame of mind.
It sounds like you have a good thought process and a great support group. Please let me know if you have any questions on anything..Hospital stay..what it's like when you come home..etc.
Good Luck!!

Natalie Uebelacker Thanks for the encouragement. It's been a long wait for me too. I've kept a positive outlook the whole time. It's only now that reality is right in front of me. I see a healthy heart on the other side and look forward to when this is a distant memory. Stay strong!

Hi Natalie, I'll be having the same surgery in 6 weeks and 4 days. My ascending aorta is the problem, but my aortic valve may "ok". My surgeon is confident I can keep my aortic valve though I have to pick what type of replacement just in case. I really think waiting is tough. Wishing you good luck and a quick recovery.

Natalie Uebelacker Hi Jeff, we just spent the last 60-90 days making that decision. After much consideration of all the valves and procedures, we chose a stinted bio prosthetic pig (porcine) valve. This is by far the most common and seems to come with the smallest degree of operating risk. Future surgeries are guaranteed with this valve, but I am hoping technology improves my choices the next time around. I wish you the best and a comfortable recovery also.
Our prayers go out to you and your family. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you all.
