Hi Steve!
Glad you are there for Lynn. It really helps. Just be there and talk to her. The nurses told me in recovery that my husband chatted with me for hours and I smiled and squeezed his hand often.
Lynn, the zen gentleman is right but the odds are so low, you are right not to agree. You are young and healthy and the folks who don't come thru are often the 85 year olds who have surgery. I am a nurse, and therefore not the best patient, and it was very hard for me to just hand myself to the nurses, but I trusted my decision and research at UCLA. As I told you before, the nurses know what they are doing. Follow their instructions after surgery and they will help you through.
Wishing you the very best and we will expect Steve to keep us updated!

Hello Steve, this is hopefully just a bump in the long road we call life. It has been for me and as I type this, I am in Cali Colombia, less than ten weeks after valve replacement and less than nine weeks after they had to reopen the chest because of an issue they had to correct.
I am hoping with you and Lynn for no complications and a slow and steady recovery. As the major support person, it may fall to you to not let her stretch too far in her activities just because she feels good that morning or day. Sometimes it slows you down a lot the next day.
Good luck and good healing. Keep us posted, we are with you guys on this.

Hi Lynn-
You have been on my mind often last few days. I did it! Surgery Last Tuesday Morning and home Saturday. I had the Bentall procedure, "A Bentall procedure is a cardiac surgery operation involving composite graft replacement of the aortic valve, aortic root and ascending aorta, with re-implantation of the coronary arteries into the graft. This operation is used to treat combined aortic valve and ascending aorta disease, including lesions associated with Marfan syndrome. The Bentall procedure was first described in 1968 by Hugh Bentall and Antony De Bono" Was able to see my new echo on Friday showing my heart as it has never been seen before. The years of waiting are over! I took a walk today and saw my neighbors who could not believe I just had surgery. I cheated by styling my hair and a little concealer under the eyes and a comfy running suite. Then after a short rest on the patio I watered the plants outside. I had a lunch of saltine crackers and Tomato Basil soup. Just wanted to share and let you know I am thinking of you and your big day!. Zach

I can relate. I would have probably died if my cardiologist had not really put his foot down when I never felt that bad. Then the surgeon said the valve was possibly the worst he ever pulled from a living person. I did slow down and did not climb stairs once one of the surgeons told me to stop all exercise because the numbers were close enough the the edge to mean that I could have been susceptible to vfib which is fatal. Relax, get some Xanax, relax some more and let the doctors work their magic. I am counting on you to slow down and begin to enjoy the view of the world from the slow lane for a couple months. It really is a gift in a sense that most people never get, just a little pain and inconvenience to be able to do it. BTW, the doctors will give you something to relax. They did me because I was not really worried but I do not ever slow down. It really helped.

Before doing surgery, Dr Oz asks the patient, "Who Loves You?" He wants to make sure that the patient can connect with someone at "soul" level before he takes their heart into his hands. After reading your Guestbook, it is beautiful to see how many people you have in your life that love and care about you. Please know that my heartfelt prayers and healing thoughts are with you daily. How come you get a lifeboat and I only got a dingy? I probably shouldn't have named mine TITANIC.
Don't worry. POSITIVE thoughts!!!! You're imagining it worse in your mind than it actually is.
In the recovery process eat plenty of protein and calcium for healing. Take your pain meds consistently in the beginning, and take them for as long as you need to take them. No need to be in pain if you don't have to be. Get plenty of sleep when you can (that's when you really heal). Walk a LOT and use your spirometer a LOT and you will make good progress. And, be real patient with yourself and the process.
I was out this weekend at an event and saw a whole bunch of people I hadn't seen since before the surgery. I got a lot of comments of people telling me if they hadn't known I had open heart surgery, they never would have been able to tell. And this is at the end of week number 6 post surgery.
You're going to do great. No problemo!

Lynn,
I was diagnosed last year and underwent AVR on Jan 3 of this year. Home in 4 days. Short daily walks for 2 weeks and got to 1 mile in week 3. Not long before I was walking my normal 15 miles per week. I am 9 months out now and have resumed all pre op activities with very little limitations and 1 daily diuretic. Looking back it was all a blur. At 56 and having always been healthy I couldn't believe this was happening to me. Some days I was downright angry about it. Some days I felt happy and all smiles. Other days terribly depressed and unable to hold back tears. I think having family that allow you to express your emotions openly is great therapy. My daughters encouraged me to hold my head high and called me their hero. Without them I don't know how I would have done it. Hold your family dear to you and be close with God. This journey you are preparing to embark upon will help build you into a stronger person. It did me. God Bless You!

Wonderfully written! Thank you. I had a few thoughts as I read your journal. It applies to us all. Realize as your boat becomes untethered from the rock you are surrounded by your family and friends. Their focus is your safety. Their desire is your full heath. As you focus on your surgery everyone else is focused on your wellbeing. As you know, none of us is alone on this trip. Thanks again. Best today.
My story is much like yours: heart murmur for many years; bicuspid valve and moderate aortic stenosis diagnosed early 2012; progressed to severe stenosis early this year; aortic valve replacement at the end of April 2013. I too was more or less asymptomatic except for shortness of breath on exertion (I like to walk and work out for exercise). But six months on I feel MUCH better than I have for years (and am continuing to feel better daily), which makes me realize that prior to the surgery I had a number of other subtle “symptoms” that I had put down to aging (I’m 69). The surgery gives a person a whole new lease on life, to be sure! It’s nothing short of a miracle and the doctors and nurses are amazing … pay attention to their orders (protect that sternum!!), and if you have the opportunity, take advantage of any cardiac rehab sessions that are on offer.
All the very best for the 7th. With your fitness level, positive attitude and support from your medical team, friends, family, and pug, your recovery is bound to go swimmingly. I will look forward to reading about your post-op journey.
