I hope you don't mind my asking a question about yoga and post-open heart surgery.
As a yoga fan myself, I always wondered if there are any restrictions on poses after AVR. I had aortic root, ascending aneurysm and BAV replaced 2 years ago. I have returned to yoga, but not with the "reckless abandon" of my youth. I avoid inverted poses, and very strenuous poses, and no longer "push my edge." Is there any basis for my concerns? As a yoga teacher who has had open heart, you have a rare perspective on this. I would love to hear your thoughts if you don't mind.

Joy Vera Hi Marie. I agree with Mara about talking to your doctor. Since I see that your surgery was 2 years ago, Iām guessing youāve done that. How you ask is important too. Doctors arenāt necessarily yogis & may be reluctant to give advice. Given the wide variety in the way that yoga can be practiced, who can blame them? Asking in such a way that you describe what movements & positions typically take place in your own practice is a good idea. Having said that, sure, thereās a basis for concern. Your description of how youāve adjusted what you do sounds reasonable. There are so many factors to consider. Meds we may take post heart surgery can cause dizziness, one personās heart may have been more traumatized than anotherās by the surgery, how long since the surgery, other conditions we may have, etc., etc. I donāt think thereās a need to be afraid but, at the same time, heart surgery provides even more of a reason to listen to our intuition along with messages from our bodies & breathing. The poses are intended to serve us, not the other way around so giving up some of them when it makes sense is just exactly how itās supposed to be. Iād take whatever advice you do get from your doctor & talk it over with your yoga teacher & enjoy your practice. Hope that helps!
