Hey Jim! It's almost here and I have had you in my prayers. You sound great about all of it, so keep it up and stay positive! Keep us all posted please.
As far as traveling on the day being discharged I can tell you that I only had an hour drive and it wasn't all that pleasant! I felt every bump and after being in a calm and serene environment where they try to keep you from getting too wound up or upset, to Boston traffic, was a definite shock to my system. My heart was pounding in my chest and really made me even more nervous. An ambulance almost slammed into my side of our truck and scared the heck outta me! So, if you can, I would try to sleep or stay distracted somehow (headphones and a playlist of music you enjoy with your eyes closed or reading?).
Best wishes!!

You best check with your cardio and your surgeon. Each case is different. I confess, I did not ask either. I figured if they wanted to limit my exercise they would have mentioned it. I know, I know, not entirely bright but I do like to run and feel better when I do. I seriously would advise you and anyone else to ask because our conditions do vary. I did stop racing in July however. I did want to be cautious. So that means I have half a brain! Take care, Kevin.

This means slow and steady even though you know you cold do more. Minimize the risk of backsliding by making planned small increments in your recovery activities and thing about what is appropriate based on how much energy you have during the course of a day. You start out with a smaller bucket of energy for a total day after surgery and you gain slightly larger buckets every few days.

Aubrey posted a note for Jim that says:
Some of this depends on the number of days after surgery as to how easy this will be. Regardless, it is doable, just make sure you do not do anything yourself like stand long periods. Because of the travel time, you need to be sitting and resting at every point possible to make sure you are not overtired and get to feeling bad.
I almost passed out on Tammy because I strung out a walk in the house, a shower and standing at the sink so be careful of the small drains on your energy and you will be fine. Take your pain meds on a regular schedule, before you start to hurt and this will let the journey be much easier as well. You got this, just be smart in your actions and you should be fine, a little tired but fine. Keep us posted.

Hi Jim,
I had an 8 hour car ride home from CCF, and it wasn't a problem. I was in the hospital for nine days though, so I was very ready to hit the road on day ten. I was very nervous about going home, but I actually found it really enjoyable.......it was so great to be on the "other side" and headed to the next phase of recovery. I would suggest bringing some comfy pillows to make yourself comfortable on the train and in the car, and be sure to take your pain meds on scHedule. I had strict instructions to get up and walk every hour and a half, which I did, but didn't always feel like doing. If you are not comfortable going home the day of discharge, just stay close to the hospital until you feel ready. You will know when you're ready!
Godspeed and good luck!

I was taking my Oxycontin. Just took them as I needed them and the ride went well. Travel for me wasn't a problem. On the train you will be able to walk whenever you want, even better.
Jim Jones Jeff, that will sure work for me. Now, if the Sox win tonight that will really make things better!

Jim, we traveled by car 2 hours the day I was released and 11 hours 5 days later without problems. The pain meds worked great, I was uncomfortable but never in pain. Only down side I slept a lot. So, I wasn't much company for my wife on the long drive and she had to work to get moving at each of our stops.
Jim Jones Excellent information, Jeff. You sure were on the road a lot the first week. This is reassuring news! ... Read more

Sounds like you are about ready. I traveled about 3 hours by car on the way home not as much as you, but I would say it is doable. The only challenge you need to get around is getting your prescriptions filled cause they can't give you any to take with you. I took my pain meds just before I left, but do to traffic and a stop for lunch, I couldn't wait to get some pain meds, especially with the bumps of travel. I would just also recommend not rushing discharge. Let them know your plans and my. Sinai will make sure you are ready for the trip. Enjoy marathon weekend too. I'll be keeping you in my prayers!

Jim: You have a whole cheering section just waiting to help you get through any complications. I bet you won't have any and this will be a breeze! Either way, you'll get through it. I was lying on the table getting an (unscheduled) echo today and I admonished myself for ever thinking that I would have a surgery that would open 1/10 of my body and not experience complications. So I expected the worse from the echo and instead I got the best news I could ever hope for. My complication was pericarditis. It was a bummer, but I would go through that pain for months to get the result I got today and the way I feel now. It will all be worth it!
Sending you tons of love and prayers.

JJ!!!!
I had a friend staying with me over the weekend from out of state, so I haven't been watching the World Series until today. Rooting for your SOX.
You know everything is going to be fine, don't you? (I'm talking about sugery, not baseball).Keep a positive attitude. Be patient (which I'm not very good at). Be consistent with your pain meds. Be confident in your heart surgeon and nurses, they've done this more than a few times. You of course know that recovery is a roller coaster, but the highs and lows get less and less as you recover. And, you won't get thrown anything you can't handle. Since you're pretty physically fit already, you're going to bounce back relatively quickly.
Positive attitude goes a long ways as you know.
I went to an event this weekend and saw a whole bunch of people I haven't seen since before surgery. Had a number of people tell me that if they hadn't known I had open heart surgery six weeks ago, they would never had guessed just looking at me. Hell, if I can do this well already, big baby that I am, then anybody can do it.
And be sure to keep posting in your journal or I'll pester you like I do Higgy.
Thanks for the encouragement. I will re-read this often post-surgery to keep me on the right track. Great news about the event this weekend. Incredibly positive feedback from folks. We get caught up in the day to day stuff and lose track of all the progress. All I can say is congrats and keep it up. Don't worry about me posting. Starting Nov. 5th I plan to post once monthly starting Dec. 5th. Too much??? Just kidding. It will be early and often. Lise will post during the early days. I know you all will welcome her. Keep after our good friend Higgy. It's great to hear from him regularly. Keep healing, big guy. Go Sox!

Jim Jones A great game. These guys are scrappers. Terrific chemistry on team. Ortiz is unbelievable. Lester is a tough guy. Would love one more win. Boston could use the title after the Marathon. Go Sox! If they win I may not wear Red Sox clothes in NYC. I don't think they like the Sox so much! Have a good one!
I know you and Lise have a busy day today doing pre-op stuff. Enjoy the evening in the city~~hope its not too cold over there!
Your turn at bat…I am hoping for a homer but would be just as happy with a base hit! I will be sending you golden California good vibes all day on tuesday and I look forward to hearing from Lise. My very best to you both…sigh…happy the day has finally arrived!
