Barry Stone Ruth, If you re visit the Taming of the Shrew...I recommend find it in a live theater such as a local "black box" kind of theater...and see it. One of those cities in Maine must have some live theatre and this is done a lot. Or, just get the Shakespear play. Can't remember the fellow's name that "tames the shrew"..but he asks Ms Kate to place her hand 'neath his foot (she needs to want to do this)...and when she is tamed...the word used is "tamed", but it is more, really more about love, that is displayed....you gotta read Ms Kate's last long, quite long lines to understand the whole thing...it is there. A new thought in my mind is Shakespear's Ms Kate learned "Ghandism" a huge long time b4 Ghandi was ever thought of.

Dear Barry,
I'm so proud of you! And, yes, it is amazing what they do at CC. As I have said, (ad nauseum), I had my aortic valve replaced on Friday afternoon, was out of the hospital on Monday before noon, flew home on Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday AM, Erik and I went to see my mother at her Sr. Living apartment about 20 miles from CC.. She had told everyone about her daughter's surgery - I suspect it was a dramatic recounting. On Tuesday, there I was eating lunch with her, looking totally normal. They assumed the surgery had been postponed. It's still hard to wrap my head around the fact that this was open heart surgery through a 3 INCH incision!
As we can now BOTH attest, those small incisions make recovery pretty much a breeze.
Keep on doing what feels right for YOU! Although, I have to admit that when Erik left for work on Wednesday after our return, he admonished me not to do anything stupid because I felt so good. I have never told this on the journals but I think I began driving within two weeks... Bad Anne!
Hope we cross paths some day in Colorado!
By the way, how is Dr. Tom's daughter? I send him so many positive thoughts a day!

Congratulations on getting through this - and being discharged so quickly. That's amazing. I'm glad to hear you're doing so well and can't wait to hear all the details. I'll tell you one thing - they're not getting me out of the hospital that quickly - I'm hanging around there until they physically remove me because I'm afraid of having some kind of complication after discharge. At 8 weeks I feel great, no pain no shortness of breath. Don't try to rehab too fast and don't be discourged the first week, you will see improvement daily but it takes a bit of time. Pain is minimum once the tubes all come out. Work on your breathing with the spirometer as much as you can. Feel free to email me with questions. Good Luck Gene wxeye@metrocast.net

You really do come off as younger with all your activities. Whew! And I considered working with a trainer once a week "active".
My husband, now 75, was severely injured in Vietnam, has 4 purple hearts, spent 18 months in hospitals getting skin grafts and rehab and such but cycled and climbed mountains until creaky joints put a stop to that with various surgeries a few years ago. Like hip replacement. He joked when they had to remove part of his foot that he was hoping for something more drastic so he could get one of those springy legs.
The attitude you have will see you through with flying colors.

Hi Barry,
I can absolutely relate to what you're saying. Unlike many people, I have a tendency to "act out" when I find out there is something wrong with me that can't be resolved without surgery. But like you, I also tend to pull it all together and face it pretty bravely when facing it is the only option. So, next week you will be jumping into the water. But the good news is, you won't need a tow by a kayak in the future. Yay!!!!!
As for Pete's comments - PETE-PETE-PETE- I love you, but really don't get you sometimes. What are you talking about? Perhaps it's about a private conversation that I wasn't privy to. But when you mentioned facebook - ugh - I agree - if anyone is/was planning to take a video of their surgery and post it - double ugh - I personally think that's sick and a bit too attention seeking - even for me - and I love attention. But Pete, sometimes you are so obscure.

Barry:
From your journals, I thought you were a young'un! When you mentioned being in Vietnam in '68 I realized you can't be that young and I marvel at all the sports activity you can do. My hubby was there from the Tet Offensive through Aug of '69 but he's probably a good bit older than you. We're in our 70s.
I marvel at your stories of all the sports activity you still do. You'll do great with the surgery because you're already in great shape. Just remember that you'll heal better in the long run if you don't try to be a hero in the short run. Take the time to heal properly before you do any serious swimming, but I'm sure your cardiologist will advise you on when you can move your arms like that.
I found your account fascinating--the parallels you drew with facing danger earlier in your life and now. Personally, heart surgery for me was a whole lot less stressful than kidney surgery was 29 years ago.
You'll do great.

Barry Stone Pete Pete Pete, as Ruth addressed you with love, you have inspired (thanks for the inspiration) me to share a little I’ve learned recently, since I began, last November, my own quest to beat my little “serious mitral valve regurgitation” issue. I say little because I’m so lucky to have had the opportunity to have had my cardio vascular disease process managed by a brilliant young Dr. Brendan Cavanaugh, who takes a personal interest in me as he does all his patients. Life is good. It has taught me to research and it is through researching for resources for rehabilitation for master athletes I have learned how fortunate I am and how there are others with cardiac disease issues that need the help of others, and there are many organizations that have been established by what I call “movers and shakers” to help others, movers and shakers who were motivated by some life stress issue, in this case a cardiac issue involving themselves or someone they love, motivated to help others. Well known Lance Armstrong took on cancer with a vengeance. As a contemporary cardiac issue example, Wes Leonard, a star basketball player for his high school, collapsed on the basketball court on March 4th, his life ended then and their because of sudden cardiac arrest, a life that could have been saved if Wes Leonard had been screened ( http://www.latimes.com/health/boostershots/la-heb-wes-leonard-cardiac-arrest-20110304,0,3098562.story). More active young people, I’ve learned, die from sudden cardiac arrest than from anything else. Prescreening, such as is the goal of the Nick of Time Foundation, founded by a fellow that collapsed at the end of a Triathlon with Sudden Cardiac Arrest, is working with schools in the Seattle area to prescreen area school students, discovering children in need of cardiac treatment services who otherwise would not know they have an issue, and saving lives. Here’s a few cardiac support organizations/foundations established by “movers and shakers”, people who made a cause from their disease or the disease of a loved one. For anyone that is interested, here’s the list of the organizations I have come accross:
The Walter Sisulu Pediatric Cardiac Foundation http://wspcf.wordpress.com/
The Childrens Heart Foundation http://www.childrensheartfoundation.org/
Cardiac Athletes http://www.cardiacathletes.org/
Iron Heart Racing Team http://ironheartracing.com/

Barry Stone Hey, Pete. Appreciate your comment. Yep, its amazing how some kinda make a career out of some disease, like the guy that started the Team in Training (TNT...from Train Endure Achieve Matter) arm of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society after his kid had, maybe died from Leukemia..can't remember the story details). When I attended their Century bike tour of Lake Tahoe last June, at the pre-ride pasta dinner, one of the speakes announced all the fund raising riders attending from all over Canada and the US had raised some 6 or 8 million dollars for Leukemia and Lymphoma research and victim support. TNT is approaching the $1 billion mark for fund raising. Then there's the Live Strong Cancer foundation founded by L. Armstrong..then there's Adam Pick with the book and this Jounal Site..then there's Ironheart Racing, founded by David Watkins (one of us heart valve issue club members) supporting several cardiac related organizations. Yep..guess all these folks used talents they had in relation to a health issue they had to try to make things better for others....I'm just sayin'...be safe/be good/enjoy life. Barry

Hi Barry,
Thanks for your note in my guest book. I've read your journal before, but my thinking is so bad these days that I just didn't remember anything. So I re-read today. I'm so very sorry your surgery had to be postponed. What a pain! I worry about that constantly. In fact, I've been having migraines, neck pain and runny nose so I went to see a doctor today who believes I have a virus (cold) or bad allergies to something. He gave me a nasal spray and promised it would alleviate the problem. I just don't want to get sick before my surgery. I don't know where I get this stuff as I am so incredibly fatigued that I stay home most of the time. My little outing today really wiped me out. Like you, I am so tired of being tired and really hope the surgery eliminates this.
You are fortunate to be able to have robotic surgery. Who is doing it? Because mine is the anterior leaflet, I am apparently not a candidate for robotic.
How long do you plan to stay in Cleveland after your are discharged? My husband wants me to stay 10 days (because medical care in Maine is awful), but I'm feeling like that is a bit too long.
Thanks for the running info, but I don't even like walking. lol. I'll stick to kayaking and sailing. I guess I'm pretty lazy, but who knows, that could all change after my surgery.
Stay well and do stay in touch. I guess I'll stick around the HVJ for awhile. I'll just stop reading certain peoples' journals in an effort to remain calm. Thanks again,
Ruth Howell

Barry Stone Thanks for the comments, Ruth. Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic (sp?) is the surgeon taking care of moi at Cleveland Clinic. I understand having a flail anterior mitral valve leaflet is the best to have if one is gonna have a flail leaflet. I do live a charmed life. My entire time away will be a total of 10 days if all goes well, and I expect it will go well. My boy will drop us (me and Ms Kate) at the airport on the 8th (Mar), I have blood work, an echocardiogram, and CT scan on the 10th, a little something and meet the surgeon of the 10th, and the valve job on the 11th (fri). expect to be out of ICU the 12th, two or three days in the hospital with a release probably Wed, stick around 'til Friday and fly home late Friday the 18th. I have very capable medical support, really super medical support people here. Young Dr Brendan Cavanaugh...I'm so lucky to have found him when I fired (well, just decided one day when the previous guy ignored my questions about endurance sport activity, HCTZ, and dehydration..thy guy just ignored my question which I repeated 4 times..obviously the old guy didn't know..so that was it with him)..when I fired that guy and looked for a cardiologist who is an athlete..and Doc Cavanaugh had recently came to ABQ. He and the others that take care of me are super. Most of my experience with Maine, from the late 70s was visiting Northern Maine about once a month when I worked at Bagotville, Quebec and lived near Chicoutimi. I'm guessing you may be somewhat near Bay of Fundy where the tides are so "big". The only time I was there the fog was so thick we couldn't even see the ocean from the route we took going south from having been at Prince Edward Island.

Ok mister, it is my prayer that you will not only be "cured"/repaired physically but also that you will know a compassion for those who have had to rehab from various surgical procedures...and also, know that not all people "run traditional marathons" but marathons none the less and they need support also..because healing is hard stuff and the more support you get and you give, the quicker and easier it becomes..I've learned that giving support to others in my situation has helped me recover faster..so it is my hope that your blog/journal will be of support to another who has a rehab journey ahead of him/her....you are one tough coot(I can say that) and you will be a wonderful example for those of us who know and love you...."Missy"
